How did you choose to implement the Theme: Thirst for Blood in your game?
We've designed a game where a father's profound longing to reconnect with his deceased daughter leads him to a ritual. In this desperate act, he uses his own blood to give life to an inanimate object, a mannequin. However, this is not a simple ritual; the daughter has an insatiable thirst for the father's blood.

Did you implement any of the optional Bonus Challenges, and if so, which ones?
2 - Life Drain: As the father undergoes the ritual and plays hide-and-seek with his daughter, she will be draining his blood and life.

3 - Out for Blood: Blood is the key ingredient for the ritual and also a resource that the daughter constantly thirsts for. Will you able to finish the ritual before running out of blood?

Beautiful professional looking game with great voice acting! I can't wait to see how this progresses! I love the carrying of the mannequin. Very creepy, kept thinking it would do something. Which made it scary. I swear it was moving slightly, right? If I had to give any suggestions at all, maybe make the pickup of items like the key and blood more apparent that you picked them up. Just have "You picked up the key" text appear for a couple seconds then fade away. When I picked up the key it took me a second to realize it was the key I picked up because I clicked immediately when the hand appeared without seeing what it was :D. But that's just a minor nitpick, game was great!

Developer

Thanks Phil :D Yeah, the mannequin has some trick into it. Glad you liked it.

This was one of the better entries in the jam. The introduction with voice overs was well done and adequately creepy. It's just that the game ended abruptly. There was so much potential! Finding keys and opening doors is a tired trope in the horror genre, I should say. The graphics were well done and make up for this.

Developer

Thank you for your kind words. What can I say? I agree with you 100%. I'm not even sure about the key, too. Probably unnecesary. We spent a lot time doing the initial setup and mood, planning the story, music, voice-over, thinking about mechanics, etc...; and we didn't have enough time to get to the hide-and-seek part of the game. We've learned and a lot and we're happy to continue and finish the demo. We want to explore where the "hide your face" mechanic thing can lead us to. Thanks again for your time.

Per my son, "I liked ... it was really creepy. It could have been more creepier. Maybe the mannequin could make poses or stand up. I really liked the graphics like a lot. What i don't like is, how you said the key was easy to find... It was not."

Developer

Agreed with your son 😊 We spent most of the time setting up the mood, art and everything and left the creepy hide-and-seek out of the demo. Which it was supposed the main thing for the jam. Anyway we've got so many ideas for he mannequin. Thanks for letting by and give it a try. Appreciated it.

Very nice looking game with responsive player controls. I personally appreciate the sprint a lot. Good use of ambient sound design in the house makes for a creepy atmosphere.

I do think house feels a little inconsistent, though. The walls and floors are falling apart but the furniture and other elements don't match. Maybe there's a story element to explain it that I missed.

For the sake of the jam I wish there was a skip intro button. The writing and voice acting are nice but when I launched the game a second time I had to wait for it to finish again.

Also, if you press a diagonal movement direction then you move much faster. Maybe that's intentional but you could normalize the input vector to remove it.

Edit: I forgot to mention that it works nicely on an ultrawide monitor.

Thanks for playing the game 😊 I'll take your feedback to discuss further improvement, and I'll check the digonal movement, too,. You can skip the initial dialogue with right-mouse button btw, we didn't say anything cause there are no hints and the initial dialogue contains instructions on how to perform the ritual. Thanks again for taking the time to play. We're glad.

This game has a lot to recommend it, especially in the look and feel. Excellent voice acting as well. We did encounter some problems with the story not progressing after we placed the mannequin, as it didn't seem to recognize it was there. I can tell this is the beginning of something great!

Thank animatey for playing it. Glad you liked the look and feel, that's where we put more effort for the time given. We've added hints in the page to help users to complete the demo. But I'll add them here, too.

📒 Instructions (Hints)

  1. Find blood for the ritual (where would you keep the blood?)
  2. Find mannequin (where would you store it?)
  3. Find your way into your daughter's room. Key is easy to find
  4. Place Mannequin.
  5. Write your daughter's name on the wall.
  6. Spill your blood on the mannequin. Have fun!
  7. Time to play hide-and-seek. Close your eyes (hold spacebar).

So my game broke on me which made it impossible to actually play.  The mannequin despawned and I was unable to find the book anywhere.

Developer(+1)

Thanks Bullhead for playing. Actually there is no book, hehe but it's ok. We didn't have time to add visual hints or enough voice cues in the game to help with the progress. It's in our todo list now.

So wait, there's no way to finish it?

Developer(+1)

Sure, we added hints on the project page to help people to finish it 😊

  2. Find mannequin (where would you store it?)
  3. Find your way into your daughter's room. Key is easy to find
  4. Place Mannequin.
  5. Write your daughter's name on the wall.

I really wanted to give this game a proper review, however, I encountered two game-breaking bugs making such actually impossible. A non bug issue to also be mentioned was the lack of UI elements and the ability to turn off the motion blur was a major problemfor me, as the blur was exceptionally nauseating and I had to move very carefully to avoid it.

Still attempting to play despite that, I managed to go through the beginning item gathering but until I got the mannequin and threw blood on it in the bedroom, the mannequin would not move after hiding my eyes and the MC would just say "I need to bring the mannequin" by the doorway as if there was some sequence break occurring. Attempting to renter the basement made me go to a beige screen that I could still cover my eyes in, but was unable to move in the world anymore. I attempted again to reload and play the game in case it was a one-time bug, but the same bug occurred.

I really enjoy the premise of the game though, it's very beautiful and the voice-acted lines were solid. I think the writing was pretty well done, and I found the maze-like pattern of the house to be very interesting. It seemed odd you could "pick a mannequin," but that was also interesting and could be a fun feature in the game.  The throwing blood mechanic was fun and cool, though the blood would immediately disappear off the mannequin once I closed my eyes and appear only on the ground afterward (may be related to the bug I experienced.)

Once the bug is fixed and the UI elements/options are in place for accessibility, this game could be really fun and interesting as it has some seriously beautiful graphics and a solid premise. I hope the developers continue to have fun on this project, as it still just looks so cool!

Thanks HappyCapyCoffee 🙏 for the thorough review and effort attempting to play twice to avoid that bug. We've made several full walkthroughs and fixed some bugs. We didn't find that one but we'll replicate your steps to find it. I guess you played the second version, right? Anyway, thanks for taking the time to play. Agreed 100% on the motion blur and UI. This game need the UI to disable/tweak many options. HDRP is heavy and many users will need to adjust a few things.

Most interesting part will be the second, the actual hide-and-seek game đŸ„ł IT's the actual core of the game, but I'm afraid we got lost a bit on the game introduction and scene setup.
