The ideas behind this game are gold. The way the UI is designed, the little details—down to the planchette pointer—are so appropriate. While some bits could use polishing (there are essentially no "camera movements" like close-ups or pans to make the scenes more dynamic, the cards could use some animation to give the card-drawing an immersive flair), looking at the credits tells you the team wasn't the largest. This means plenty was accomplished for a single-month jam, congrats!
The story is unveiled in a manner that feels close to a tease, but with far darker undertones, the imperfect repetition builds the world to make the conclusion far more satisfying. And the voice acting is great. While being gently guided by the narrator (who isn't alien to emotion), I can feel how the Old Friend is holding back in their attempt to arrive to the best (?) outcome, the Other Friend's otherworldly nature that's incapable of understanding humans. Congrats on this game!
Thank you for your kind words and very fair criticism! I definitely learned the importance of setting deadlines and programming is not as simple as I naively thought. But with the bit of time we had we wanted to at least made the parts we had come out it's best so I'm glad you acknowledge that! Thank you again for giving the time to play and review the game. :)
Right off the bat, great UI. My jaw dropped immediately after clicking on settings lol. The voice acting is extremely fitting and is very well done. I loved the art and the story was definitely pulling me in. Amazing work!
I had the same reaction as well-- our UI team Rem and Windchimes really knocked it out of the park! Thank you for playing. <3
Very beautiful work! Love how the gui is set up and the general writing style. The art is gorgeous, too. Loved how the mystery built upon itself to its solution. And props to the VAs, of everything I've rated so far theirs was the best. Great work!
Thank you so much! It means the world to me that the Voice Acting is the best in your opinion :)
Yes, thank you very much for the kind words! π
What an AMAZING game. From the Art and UI to the voices and the writing. Everything was wonderful. The game also really allowed me to reflect on myself which is ALWAYS what I want from a video game. If you are thinking about whether to download and play this game or not, do it!
Thank you so very much, both for the incredibly kind words and for streaming it, as well! π Appreciate you!!
This game was so well put together ! Everything looked perfectly fit together, the background, the characters and especially the unique UI. The UI was so interesting looking that I even played around with it a bit. The story is uniquely told in story telling style, and the voice works really well with the story and art. The mystery was confusing at first but the slowly reveal was well done. Everything worked so well together and there's definitely a lot of attention paid to every details, it was great!
Thank you so very much--I'm so glad you enjoyed it!! π
I love everything about your game. I loved the mystery, the mysticism, how the story unfolds, the voice acting, the pace... Seriously, everything. It all works so well together.
I am also amazed at the art. The Old Friend design is one of the prettiest I've seen. The color palette and the texture the whole game has, fit every other aspect and create the perfect atmosphere. I can't wait to play more now that I'm more aware of the story, and I feel like making people want to play your game over and over again is such a great and difficult thing to achieve. You should be proud!
Just out of curiosity, there's something I wanted to ask if I may. In many aspects, such as the interface, the writing style, the pace, and even some mechanics, it gave me to Disco Elysium vibe (which many would consider a huge compliment, and it's meant as such!). I had to triple-check that your game was developed in Ren'Py and not Narrat. If it's okay to ask, how is it that you chose one software over the other??
Amazing entry, thank you! :)
Wow, thank you so very much! π I definitely consider being compared to Disco Elysium as an extremely high compliment!!
As far as the choice of Ren'py goes, it really was just familiarity/comfort; I haven't worked in Narrat before (and neither has the UI programmer, I don't believe), so--particularly for a jam!--it was simply a case of sticking with the devil I know.
Thank you again for the kind words--I really enjoyed Hocus Opus as well! β¨
Makes total sense :) Thanks for answering and for the kind words <3
I am incredibly honored with the Disco Elysium comparison! That, and Slay the Princess are both inspirations for our work, and I thank you for your gracious comment! I can't wait to try your game as well :)
I loved this game so much—the art, voice acting, and UI, everything! Congrats to the team; itβs a very well-done game!
Thank you so much--I'm so happy you enjoyed it! π
Wowee!! What an impressive game! I love the almost Art Nouveau-styled aesthetic, and everything from the sprites to backgrounds to UI (those card designs!) is truly gorgeous! The details of color schemes and the planchette cursor were fun to pick up on too. The story is immediately intriguing, and the characters feel fleshed-out and true to themselves, which is particularly impressive for such tricky points of view to write from. That especially carried over into the endings, which all felt true to where the characters were coming from; I couldn't be upset at even what should have been some of the "worst" endings, as it still felt natural (though I still went back and tried out the others!) - not an easy needle to thread! Not to mention the complete voice acting throughout, which really added to the world and blended beautifully with the music.
Super great job, and big congrats to the whole team!!!
Thank you so much--we had a wild and wonderful ride making this! π
Quite an impresive UI and especially voice acting
Thank you for the kind words! We were incredibly lucky to work with so much talent on the team. β¨
Wow, what a journey. Where to even begin? This is so polished - great music that fits so seamlessly with the progression and isn't too distracting, UI that's enjoyable to navigate, voice acting that is just superb, story that slowly unfolds as pieces of the puzzle of what happened fall into place. I was reminded a little of Slay the Princess, where repetition is not as it seems, and there's a play with memory... (Also, what does Alan Wake say? It's not a loop, it's a <spoiler>). I loved the characterisation of An Old Friend and the complex relationship with the PC; the mix of love and desire for ownership and control was so interesting to read in their behaviour. And I love that each ending has consequences, and how in some endings the consequence is kind of numbed if I step into an immortal character's perspective.
Congratulations to the team on completing this absolute gem of a visual novel, and in the span of a month! You wizards.
Thank you so much for the very kind words! π (also, I just finished Paddy Makes Breakfast myself, and absolutely adored it, so thank you for that as well!)
Just saw your comment on it; thank you (and good luck for judges' scoring)!
Well im blown away, this does not feel like a game jam game, this is so well made, i dont even know how to describe it. The game starts and you hear that echoey narration and it just instantly immerses you. It feels like im playing a tabletop rpg or dnd online again. It has such a great feel to it and then its complimented by so many other amazing aspects, the ui is unique, beautiful, well designed and thematic, the sfx, the music, it all comes together with great writing and voice acting to make an amazing experience. The in game art also amplified the experience even more.
Although I must unfortunately say that you animating is possibly your weakest part. The visuals are very static, which is common in a visual novel, but with so much care to many of the other parts of the game, its a bit sad that little thought was put to making the scenes themselves feel unique.
Overall I must say this is one of the best games I've played for this entry and the audio side of things was phenomenalalong with one of my favourite story telling methods. Great job guys, you did amazing!
Thank you very much for your review! I appreciate all you said here :)
I very much agree with your sentiment, and that definitely is something I knew upon submission that we want to expand on this front, so I'm talking to the artist to add more content for a final update post jam. But I absolutely understand and take responsibility for this build's aspect.
βThe first thing you notice is the cold: a clammy, clinging damp, a shadow left out in the rain and now draped over your shoulders, dripping down your arms, chill breath stirring at the back of your neck.β
Tell It Slant is a beautifully written game that completely succeeds at building its atmosphere. The music, ambience, voice acting, writing, and art all blend seamlessly to perfectly tell a melancholy and haunting tale.
Burdock was one of my favorite games from last yearβs jam, so I was excited to see that Butterfly Rocket wrote for this game in this yearβs jam - and they did not disappoint. Well done to this whole team, fantastic work!
Isn't their writing incredible? I feel really fortunate to be working with such talent. Thank you for your kinds words!
Thank you so much--and I know I said it already, but feeling is mutal! I love your work, and Sunk is fantastic!! π
Beautiful entry, everything fits together very well and overall it looks very professional. The game has a unique, polished feel to it, and I love the inclusion of tarot card readings. Great job! :)
Thank you so much! Widdershins did a lot of the historical/spiritual context surrounding the game, so when it came to writing there's a lot of backing and reasoning to it other than "it's mystical". Needless to say everyone did a lot to make this game the way it is so again, thank you <3
That's really more than jam entry. Really, it looks like what would've been sold for money.
Especially, I want to praise voice actors. Idk how to describe it properly but I would listen to audiobook with them with please (and yeah, with that audio design, too)
I don't want to sound like it I don't notice work of artists, they are also great (for example I like how artist drew emotions of Old Friend), I just focused on a things that most visual novels don't do
The actors saw this and were over the moon over it, thank you for your kind words! <3
I especially wanted to focus on the VO performances because it's a major passion of mine-- I'm glad you feel that it's of high quality
Ohmygosh. What an INCREDIBLE entry. From the art direction, to the soundtrack, to the WRITING- A chilling, HAUNTINGLY immersive play experience. The narration, voice acting and sound design almost made me want to simply close my eyes, as though this were an audio book. But if I were to have done that, I'd have missed out on the wonderful visuals- What a STUNNING UI. I found myself just hovering over buttons to listen to that satisfying card swipe, haha! The sprite expressions were SO emotive! And I loved the detail of the environment lighting being reflected on the sprite as well!
It's just so lovely. I was enamored by how quickly attached I became to my Old Friend, and the twist I received in my playthrough sent nothing but shudders down my back. Gosh! I loved this. Absolutely intriguing, and made for a wonderfully spooky and mysterious evening.
Congratulations to the entire team for Tell It Slant! Just spooktacular.
Thank you so very much for the incredibly kind comments! π I really love the look of The Stars Under Lockehurst--I can't wait to play it!
I cannot wait to hear what you think of TSUL!
And you are very welcome- The praise is much deserved!!! It is SUCH a treat! I am sharing it with my friends!
Wow, thank you so much! Saying it could be an audiobook is just about the greatest compliment the voice actors and I could receive. But my gosh do the visuals not disappoint, indeed! Nor the writing! They're all incredible people.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience <3
It is a GORGEOUS high level of polish altogether, I could really see this being a full blown series. I loved it. And of course! Thank you again for playing TSUL! I am always happy to return the love ππ«Ά
