pre-jam devlog (optional)
Solo Dev Game Jam #4 (Two-Button Controls) was my very first game jam. I made "The Universe in Balance" a 2.5D game about teetering cosmic balls on a satellite dish against the backdrop of the galaxy: https://itch.io/jam/solo-dev-game-jam-4/rate/2928027

I took that concept and expanded it into a prototype for "Foodgitives" a frantic action-arcade game about saving your ingredients from being cooked. Wind, water jets, and kitchen knives will attempt to push you off the board or cut you up. You must tilt and spin the board and survive the clock to prevent your food from becoming dinner.

For the Solodev Marathon Jam #4 I added:
* 2-Player Local Co-Op
* Keyboard support (Gamepad already supported)
* Special Power-Ups and Hazard Items
* Environmental Art

the game is fun but its hard to see where will the chopper land.

It does get stale a bit once you figure out to run in loops to avoid the chopper(and then praying not to die from bad wind/water rng),but more melanics will probably flesh things out in the future

jumping is a very risky move due to to the random burst of wind,and there is no mechanics that requires jumping to deal with,so the player is better off only using it as a last ditch effort.(You can also fly the fruit up to the chopper.)

I am also not sure what does the mircowave power up actually does.

Winds being weaker but lasting longer may make things more interesting and differnt type of boards can also spice things up.

This is really helpful feedback Sword Fan, thank you so much for taking the time to play and write back. Agreed on the need for telegraphing and more power-up feedback.

  • May I ask what you think would make the game more skill-based? Is it just about telegraphing attacks like how the knife rotates before chopping?
  • And by "coyote time", do you mean slowing down time at the edges of the board?

Simple but very original, polished and fun game! The water squirt and the wind effect are impressive, well done!

Fun game. I can see how it would be fun with more people.

This game is really fun! I love the mechanics, but I think the knife could have a more defined shadow to better judge where it will land and escape in time. That would make the gameplay feel even more precise. Overall, I see a lot of potential for this game to grow and improve. Great job!

What a cool balancing game :D

  • Innovation – Very cool and fun idea!
  • Fun – The balancing was fun and all the different hazards made it intense and interesting to watch.
  • Graphics – Very nice 3D models!
  • Audio – Cool sounds, like then the orange gets chopped by the butcher knife heh
  • Polish – Very polished! Not sure what else it would need.  Maybe some screen effects? Like when the water sprays towards the camera? Or when the food gets chopped?

Great job on the awesome game!  Please check out my game if you like Metroidvanias or platformers :D

That's a really cool concept, really imaginative! It's fun to play too. Congrats!

Excellent game! Fun and polished across the board. Some feedback:
You can bug out the game by throwing the ball on the gloves to the right and screening the knife away with the cutting board.
The knife feels a bit too mobile for how strong it is. It feels quite oppressive.

Otherwise very cool game though!

Thank you for playing Darko! Good to know about the difficulty of the knife and I have uploaded a fix for the glove bug.
