I hope this game won it's jam, I will have to also check out what it's competition was

Developer(+1)

It did win the jam which was pretty cool! It's the first time I've won a game jam. Gave me more confidence to make games.

Really awesome game with some really cool ideas and honestly made me feel like a bad person. The art is really incredible and the sound design is wonderful. While I did enjooy the characters, I do feel like some of their "Quests" were a bit too "Go here because I said to", but again I really liked it overall.

Developer

Hey thanks for the great feedback! Would the way to improve on the quests be to have more puzzle-style quests in your opinion?

Submitted

It was less how simple the quest was, it just needed some justification. "Get me this thing and I'll tell you story" doesn't really work for me. What if instead, the old man was struggling to talk and the character said "Maybe some water will help him?", then as a thank you the old man gives some back story? It tells you a bit more about the character and the location, while also making it something urgent enough that the player feels justified spending time on it.

Developer

Ah yeah sorry about that one! I added the water part very late in development and didn't have much time to refine it.

wow impressive little game. I love the art and music and enjoy the story. It' really creepy! Maybe just add more feedback during fighting rats. I didn't understand if I touch or miss!

Developer(+1)

Ah yeah there is supposed to be a sound effect but the Game Boy has such a slow processor that the music kind of overrides that. I did have a different colored flash for a hit too. Ah well. Thanks for playing!

Really cool game! I would play hours and hours of it. If you plan to expand the thing in the future, I missed some dificulty . It was everything vey rail roading and I would enjoy more puzzles. I loved the portraits and the pixel art!

Developer (1 edit)

I totally agree. I want to combine this art style with a game where I have more time to focus on the game design. As linear as this was, my previous game jam game was even more linear so I think I'm developing in the right direction. Puzzles are very challenging to develop in a tight time constraint.

I really enjoyed the art and sound design on this one! The story definitely worked together with the both of those, so great job on that. I wish that there was something else the player could have done in the camp area part as it felt like I was just walking back and forth trying to figure out how to proceed with the game. Other than that, it's really impressive that you all worked on this with a GameBoy aesthetic and the work you guys put in definitely shows. Awesome job y'all!

Wow that was a fun ride! The sprites are just AWESOME! If you would've asked me if it's possible to create a great horror game with the gameboy aesthetic  I would've said no way! But you did it and it works really great! The gamedesign is also really oldschool with that backtracking and stuff. One of my favorites in this jam for sure! :) Awesome job! Congrats!

Developer

Hey thanks so much! It's definitely a challenge to take 16 pixel sprites and make anything scary. The full-screen parts did the heavy lifting I think. Resident Evil was a big inspiration.

Submitted(+1)

I know that there was a Resident Evil for the GBC but I've never actually tried it. I've always assumed that it's really bad :D Your game is just awesome though!

Developer

It is awful, haha. I did not get very far. I think they didn't work well with the limitations... Tried to replicate more than the GB could handle.

For someone that doesn't know the technical limitations of the GB by heart it's pretty convincing :)
