Seems like the game is bugged. Buying anything in the shop uses points, but has no effect.
To feed or use what you buy in the store you need to first buy it in the store then click on the pet to open the pet actions where you can see the things you buy and also use them

I really like the idea of the game and the dinosaur is cute. I wasn't able to keep him alive very long, sadly.
