Visually (barring the gothic font, a little hard to read) and the fact that a VN was combined with a rhythm game is nice, and the online leaderboards is another plus, too.

However, control wise because of how things were mapped out (horizontally), I played with my head tilted most of the time because the way that the receptors are lined up vertically was throwing me off otherwise.

The idea of slowly adding instruments to the song was interesting story-wise, but in gameplay terms meant that each successive level is just a longer version of the previous one.

Aside from the fact that each chart was strictly hold notes, the hit detection for these felt oddly lenient since you are able to “start” holding the note regardless of how much you initially missed unless another note in the same lane comes immediately after it.

I am interested in seeing a breakdown on how scoring works though, considering the gaps near the top of each leaderboard:

Developer

Thank you very much for feedback! It's valuable to hear that the horizontal notes do not work intuitively for everyone, and the gameplay's learning curve could use some work. Mick can probably provide information on how the scoring works, but otherwise thank you very much for valuable feedback!

Developer

Thanks for the quality feedback! Scoring went through a few iterations, but ultimatelly, you get 10 points for hitting a note, lose 5 for missing a note completelly, and then also gain... I can't remember the exact values, but about 0.1 points for every 0.1 of a second when holding the right note, lose about half that if holding a note which should not be pressed. There was no system to verify if the note was hit perfectly or little late, so yeah, there is no punishment for hitting the note after 90% of it is over... apart from losing the note-holding points.

I've played through these songs probably about a 100 times readjusting the notes to fit well between following the music perfectly and... being actually possible to play, so uhh no wonder I'm still near the top of the leaderboards :p Looking back on the feedback we got (including Yours), the notes should have evolved a lot more between the songs, to improve the difficulty curve and lessen the sense of repetitiveness...

i do love the art and the story was fun. but i have 2 problems with it. I

did feel like there was more story then game, it felt like a visual novel more then a game.

and other then that i found it to be really easy, that could just be me.

overall its a fun time.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! And... yeah, compered to your game, ours was incredibly easy. The idea here was that the leaderboards will help to cater to the more dedicated, challange-seeking players, but the less skilled players won't ragequit after failing 3 times in a row. I actually scrapped a bunch of 'hardmode' code, because my teammates said the game was too hard as is, so... yeah, try and please everybody, you end up pleasing noone.

Developer(+1)

Balancing the game is deffo a challenge! Maybe adding a easy and hard mode might have helped? People I played it definitely struggled with it, but i can understand how it can be difficult when you already have gaming experience. Thank you for your feedback!

Great visuals and I thought it was cool having progression of the song as more members of the band were added on. Incredible how you were able to piece together visual novel aspects in with a rhythm game in such a short amount of time.

There did seem to be some scaling issues that made hitting notes pretty unplayable. Ended up just smashing keys to progress. (scaling is a devil I struggle with) Scaling issues aside, it's a visually fantastic game jam entry!

Developer

Hey! Thanks for the feedback! If you're playing on widescreen/4k or any kind of funky resolution and had problems with UI scaling, be sure to play the widescreen fix version!

The fonts are pretty hard to read, the notes are not always fitting the music and the flute sounds like a clarinet. Also, it might be because I'm used to osu!mania, but seeing the notes scrolling horizontally feels weird.

However, I love that within a few lines you manage to give each of your characters strong personalities (even if they're a bit cliché), fun puns and a role in the song. The twist with the Devil playing triangle was great as well! This game tells a little story with nice characters with music being the main subject (even if the guy's reasons for being in hell in the first are kinda blurry).
I loved playing this game, well done ^^

Thorough and constructive criticism. Much needed and very much appreciated!

the music girl here to provide you with some lore from the development: the flute is actually the "recorder" preset because that sounded better than the flute. So pretty sharp observation. Thank you for well-thought feedback!

What kind of software were you using when composing?
Forgot to mention it, but I hated this little girl for making me feel bad for not practicing enough haha!

Developer

Cakewalk! Big recommend, it's free and you can do a lot with it :)

Submitted

I have used Cakewalk a bit, but it does not work very well with my Forcusrite :c Maybe it's just my PC, I don't know.

Developer

Aww, that's too bad :(

Loved the visual novel aspect, and the art was really nice! Some fonts were a bit hard to read though :P

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Seems that many people agree that the fonts we used were a bit too... stylized. There are thousands of font out there, so definitely gonna look into that

Developer

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the art! We had a lot of fun coming up with the story :D

I think the idea of recruiting a band player by player is a great idea and it works well as "Every new player adds to the length". Although, I would have preferred it if new players added difficulty instead. Like: You start with only two buttons for the guitar and every new player adds one or two more. But this works as well.
I loved the art, the characters and the location looked really cool. The notes might need a bit more polish (I see they are stretched instead of sliced). Also, the fonts can be a bit hard to read sometimes.
The music is pretty good and I love that the new players add one new layer to the song each.
Creative idea to combine a rhythm game with a visual novel. I think it works well.
Overall an awesome entry. Thou did a great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the quality feedback! I agree, the different instruments should change and become more difficult with each musical-battle, that would make it less repetitive and made the difficulty curve smoother at the first levels. Again, thanks for good criticism :)

Developer(+1)

Starting with only two buttons and advancing actually sounds like a very good idea for better learning curve as well. Thank you for your feedback!

The visual novel aspect is really good, and the assets are great! but the fonts are sometimes a bit… hardcore and hard to read Well done!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! The fonts were a... tricky balance between conveying character and being readable. Maybe could have used another iteration to be just right.

Wow you clearly put a lot of effort into this game and almost made a rhythm visual novel there haha. Love the graphics! Difficulty was also well chosen in my opinion and controls worked pretty well for me too. Sometimes I had a feeling though that some notes that sounded like they should start at the same time were slightly (only a few pixels) off and didn't align completely? Don't know maybe it's just me. Great entry, with the best story I've seen in this jam so far!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for the feedback :) I'm glad you enjoyed it!
The note alignment thing is something I (the programmer of the team) hoped to sneak under the radar. Basically it waits a single frame before a next note can be played. I'm genuinely impressed you were able to spot it :D

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked the graphics, we did spend a lot of time on those, so it's great to hear! :)

Developer(+1)

third reply to this cause i did the story and now i'm very flattered, thank u ^_^

This reminds me of the rock adventure game No Straight Roads! Using instruments to play through the story, Great IDEA, rhythm aspect is quite satisfying too, Great aesthetics. Would love if the game could be more dynamic, more movements :)

Great Job!

I would have liked to have more options in input.

We didn't even really think about controls customization. Thanks for bringing our attention to that :)
