This was really, really good all around but "THE GODS ARE ANGRY YET ALL IS QUIET" is, like, mindblowingly great. What a sentence to read in a farming game! Well done!

Developer(+1)

This brought a huge smile to my face, thank you!

Great game. The spin mechanic for using items was very cool. I wasn't using the shovel or axe at all in the first few levels and let the monsters take them. Then things started getting very hectic and I saw the error in my ways.

I didn't know a farming game could be this stressful haha (in a good way), but I enjoyed it a lot.

It took me a bit to figure out how certain mechanics worked (like where to refill my can ) and the first time I was trying to cut away all the trees, rocks and grass in the entire area, before I paid more attention to the timer. Once I understood the game loop the amount of time I got for a level was just right (also I like how the growing pumpkins have faces). The game feels quite challenging due to the timer, but in a sort of roguelike way where each attempt increases my understanding and skills and gets me further into the game.

The penalty theme is well implemented and adds new challenges that force you to rethink your strategy and priorities each time. At some point I couldn't find my shovel until I realized it was those ****** little goblins taking my stuff. >:(  (but to see them scurrying away with my tools was hilarious) This was my best attempt, getting to the 3rd (?) level.

Sometimes I would get stuck in the middle of a flame and wasn't sure how to get out, but that's about the only real bug I've come across.

This is fantastic feedback! We were way too short on time during jam week to add a tutorial, but there will definitely be one in some future version, so understanding which tools and mechanics are obtuse is a hug help.

The near-universal feedback is that the goblins are funny, but frustrating - you are not alone with this gripe haha.

Thank you for playing!

Yes!!!

I'll +1 the fact that if the goblins grab all your tools you're in a lot of trouble because you can't drop any back off at your base. I worked around this by using the seeds, which are dropped automatically eventually - you can kinda slowly bring all your tools back by bringing the seeds back, using them till they drop, bringing shovel back, digging more, swapping to seeds, using them till they drop, etc. But it's pretty tedious and if the mischievous goblins (I love the mischievous goblins) are still around they're just gonna steal your stuff again! It'd be nice to have a "drop tool" option.

Maybe more generally: I was a little too tired to understand the mechanics here the first time I played the game but came back just now and totally loved this!! The mechanics actually seem totally clear to me so I'm not sure what I was confused about tbh. Just mentioning in case "exhausted eieio  was confused when playing this" is helpful somehow lol.

I think you captured the arcade game feel really well here and I like that a whole lot, and it was satisfying to sit down and beat the game.

One other minor gripe I had is that the relic altar is right next to where the goblins were putting all of my tools, so I kept accessing the altar by mistake when I wanted to pick up a tool (and kinda vice-versa). Might be easier if they were slightly farther apart although for flavor I get why you did it this way!

Anyway I'd be excited to come back and play a fleshed out smited :)

Thank you for taking the time to leave such detailed feedback! It really is a huge help for future development!

I really like the spin mechanic! Makes every action feel fun.

Fun game with lots of mechanics and layers, very well done for getting this finished in just a week! I wish there was a little more time to explore and branch out to find those relics the altar area mentions, but I ended up needing to camp near my farm very often to take care of the fire and the goblins. I understand if this was the type of game you're going for though, because it definitely had me feeling panicked and frantic, in a good way!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for trying it out! The frantic pace of the game is definitely what we were aiming for, but we did also want players to feel like they can dip out and explore a little more. I'm not sure what adjustments we'll make, but giving players the opportunity (and meaningful incentives) to explore is something we want to push further.

Cool little game! Lots of complexity and really liked the spinning object mechanic. The little goblins are cute but mischievous! I could see some sort of tower or wall defense-like system being a cool addition to this.

My strategy was to just try and create a huge farm in the beginning so that you have enough pumpkins planted and you just have to water them. I appeased the gods once but then they were just angry at me the next season so not sure it was really worth it. I also was not sure how to bring the objects back from the goblins since I could not hold "nothing" in my hands meaning I'd have to go and exchange whatever it was I was holding with them. Definitely felt like a Penalty haha.

Developer(+1)

That is such fantastic feedback about the goblins, thank you so much. I had not considered that any stolen tool is basically stuck wherever the gobs drop it! In an early build, you could put tools down without picking up a replacement, but we lost that feature when I rewrote the tool pickup code. Thank you so much for thinking so critically about the game. There will dedinitely be a post-jam release in the future, and there will definitely be a major change to the tool gathering system.

Developer(+2)

Thanks for playing! There isn't a way to bring any tools back other than exchanging another tool which makes the goblins particularly painful. I think the addition of  some sort of work bench/tool rack by the barn might help alleviate this by allowing players to deposit an item or two so they could free up their hands.

I found the controls a bit confusing at first. The rotating action of the tools felt a bit weird, maybe because it’s difficult to use precisely. But I soon realised that’s the whole point, it’s about being fast, not neat and accurate! Once I overcame that hurdle I really enjoyed it.

And I really dig the graphics style. Very retro!

Developer

Thanks for playing, and for leaving feedback!! How many stages were you able to clear? And what penalties did you recieve?

Submitted(+1)

First I got fire, then I got twisting vines. They are a really nice addition. I did encounter a bug though: I was chopping down some vines and some fire spawned on top of me and I couldn’t move at all then.

Developer

That sounds like a bug! Good find, thank you!!

Cute game. A bit frustrating with how quickly each round lasts. The promise of impending doom from 'old Gods' for not doing well filled me with foreboding. I liked how I could continue next season with the work from previous round completed.  I was afraid of making a stain to my reputation for less-than-stellar performance, I was afraid to keep playing living under the assumption of being doomed (but not seeing the results yet). Each round ended in 0 points. Even when I managed to collect pumpkins; and even mail 3 of them to the post box.

I can see myself playing more if I could get an understanding of what to expect.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing, and for taking the time to leave such detailed feedback!

To win each round, you must deliver 15 pumpkins to the mailbox. Digging up and gathering relics adds to your score, independent of whether you win or lose.

It sounds like a post-jam version needs a robust tutorial! Knowing what info is unclear or poorly explained is super helpful, thank you!

The spin action is so janky but I love it! It’s got such a character. Nice art, very pico8. Plus, angering gods is always a good story.

Submitted(+1)

Cute art & interesting mechanics. I'm still not 100% sure what I'm supposed to, but still had fun time as smol dude running around with axe :D Easy-mode without timer could be nice add?

Submitted(+1)

I really like this! I love the different penalties, and that if you explore you can find and do a little god-appeasing side quest. I wish that  there were some vfx and sfx to compliment the fast paced gameplay though, and its a little hard to understand what to do in the beginning. But an overall great entry!
