  • art is good, but take away the names including shadow and alchemist, and this is a "thats not my neighbor" like game.

STORY
You are the leader of a shadowy secret society of Alchemists, the Brotherhood of Flame. NOT to be confused with the Brotherhood of Fire, those heathens! You must let in members of your society for your yearly meeting while keeping out imposters who seek to infiltrate your ranks.

Race to gain influence over the globe by using your members. Take over the world before your rivals to win!

CONTROLS
Left click to drag and drop papers, flip through pages, and interact with UI elements

Right click to inspect and un-inspect books and papers

GAMEPLAY
Pull the bell's chain to summon a new member or start the day. Compare the member with your rule book to decide whether to let them in. Pull the corresponding chain to accept/deny them entry. The hourglass shows how much time is left in the level!

Extra Notes
While I have prior non-gamedev coding experience, this is actually the first game I've ever made! I had a great time making it, thanks for hosting the jam!

Really nice game! Please make hotkeys later if you continue the development :p I love how you dealt with alchemy that was smart. The game is coherent all along well done!

Dear evil diary,

I have successfully infiltrated the STUPID order of flames. Ptew ptew, even saying their name brings disgust to my lips... Anyways they appointment as their meeting guard! I get to let in as many glorious order of fire members as I want!

They kept sending me letters about letting in the wrong members but I just ignored them. What're they gonna do about it?

With this we can sabotage the stupid... other order and we will rule this planet with ease! Muahahahahahahaha.

Side note: Make sure to take my robes for a thorough cleaning, pretending to rub shoulders with these wanna-be cult members makes me stink!

*** So yeah anyways about the game. It's a fantastic and really fun twist on the Papers Please mechanic. It's executed really well and doesn't stray far from the formula.

The art is simple but well communicated however the text was pretty small/difficult to read at times which is concerning for a game that has a lot of reading/focus on documents. It didn't stop me playing i just had to really get close to my monitor sometimes to double check I was reading it correctly.

As you can probably tell from my entry above and the screenshot I wanted to see what would happen if I just let everyone in. Suffice to say, you lose because the other cult takes over the world instead.

The mechanic of using your cult members as a resource after letting them in is a stroke of genius and I thought was really smart.

Oh also the SFX of them falling through the trap door when you deny them is hilarious.

Thanks for the review, you made me laugh a few times lol. That's a great point about the text, It's such an essential part of the game that it needs to be readable or the game will be impossible - that's something I'll fix as soon as I get the chance! Glad you liked the SFX of them falling, I added that right before submitting (beforehand they would just walk away) and I still cackle every time I hit the trapdoor.

I'm going to add more days and mechanics, the original plan was to add invisible ink and cracking coded messages, taking passwords through dialogue, etc. I didn't have enough time to do it for the jam but I'll keep working on it!

Really fun ! Liked the added concept of "sacrificing" fellow alchemist for influence. Good job :)
