  • Nice and snappy platformer, the movement and grapple mechanics felt quite smooth. The spreading theme works more as a timer than anything else, but it was implemented pretty cleanly.

Did you include your Game Design Document in your downloadable files?
Yeah i did

Tell us about your game!
Hey! I noticed quite the lack of 2D platformers (< notable lie) in this jam, so i decided to make a little 2D platformer!

The name of the game is callled "Grapplin' colours" and you control a character called Kate to a cave where she seals a being back to their chest where Kate (""accidentally"") found them.

the controls are quite simple.

keyboard and mouse controls:

WASD or arrow keys to move around
P/space bar to jump
X/O to swing with your axe
Z/I to activate grappling
escape to pause
enter to select a menu option

controller inputs (using 360 buttons):
DPAD/axis to move around
A to jump
B to swing your axe
X to activate grappling
start to pause the game
A to select a menu option

Did you remember to include your Game Design Document?
damn! it's almost like i answered this before! (yes, yes i did)

Is your game set to Public so we can see it?
Yeah

Extra Notes
I got some burnout from this but honestly nothing more

Game looked super polished! Felt pretty good to play as well. Only issue I had was that "I" didn't like to work with the grappling hook all the time, Z was very consistent though, as soon as I switched to Z i never died again haha! Well done!

the I key isn't working?

An intense platformer that really challenges you to keep calm and think about your timing with grappling hooks.  I think the movement felt great which is the most important part of platformers so you're good on that! My only real feed back is to maybe work on some visual aspects, as some of the grappling hooks were a bit hard to see. Also a more kicking and intense soundtrack may add some intensity to the idea of having to hurry. Great job overall!

Good afternoon sir! Thanks for the review of my game! It's reviews like these that encourage me to make more games like these, it honestly inspires me a lot :3

Oh I suck at platforming. But I love the concept!

Developer(+1)

well, it happens lol, i also suck at a couple of genres (RPGs, top downs and more 3Dish titles specifically due to my bad depth perception), but thanks for the complement lol :3

Game's concept is cool. I like the music and the pixel art looks nice! Man some of the platforming is ball busting hard, I'm not a platforming guy though so take that feedback as you will. Took me a while to realize the grapple points were the silver pieces in the wall.

Developer(+1)

Hey! thanks for the feedback! I really do appreciate it a ton!

About the grapple points, i just honestly have to remake the sprites for them cuz they are not very...visible at this moment in time, so thanks for pointing that out!

Developer

wow, so many positive comments :3333 I'm quite flattered

Nice! Seems like it has a lot of replayability. I am terrible at platformers, so I'm a bad person to review this type of game. I didn't make it through the first level, let's put it that way XD

The introductory text was quite extensive, and I think could do with being pared down to get into the game a little quicker. I also found the custom font a bit hard to read at times.

However, there was a real feeling of "just one more try!" which I think is a good sign. Awesome submission, well done :)

Developer

Hey! thanks for the review of my game! I actually designed this game to be as re-playable as possible, almost comparable to something like the PICO-8 version of celeste, which is a game that was also made in a game jam from which i took a lot of inspiration from (alongside the final version of celeste lul), about the introductory text, it was more or so an afterthought which means i didn't have a ton of time to really think about the size of it n stuff, so i just tried making a short little story that could be expanded upon

i plan to make a bigger version of this game where the story is told in short bits from each level n stuff in the future, but unfortunately due to time constraints, i was unable to finish things like cutscenes for the game

thanks for the review tho <3

Overall, a fun game to check out. I liked the varied theme of the final level vs the first three, the game controlled really well, also the difficulty of the levels was also pretty solid, if not a bit tricky at times (the start of level 2 feels EXTREMELY tight and I failed it a lot of times). If there would be one thing I'd add it would be some sort of indicator of the area you can use your grapple hook in, since it's difficult to tell how far away you can actually use it and that lead to many deaths when I thought I should be in range and then I was not.

Definitely a fun game, good job on submitting this!

Developer(+1)

Well i would like to say thanks for the feedback first and for all! I'm gonna be very plainly honest with you here and awnser a few questions regarding some stuff that you outlined here

regarding the start of level 2, that difficulty spike at the start was honestly something that was quite unplanned really, i planned to add ladders to it n stuff but because ladders have a small problem that i was not able to fix until the end of the jam regarding animations, i was unable to add them there, this comes alongside the indicator for the grappling hook that was cut due to time constraints, so yeah, sorry about that!

but i'm honestly quite flattered by the review you submitted, as this is my first ever game jam game, and i've worked extremely hard on it, tysm <3

I just really love platformers. This was a joy to try to run through. I only found one diamond, but I also just enjoyed outrunning the darkness. Thank you for making this! If you're looking for constructive feedback if you continue this project: I'd recommend working on the wall jump, make it block the direction of the wall for a little longer, and narrow down the amount of alternate paths or slow down the darkness to give more time to explore. I had fun, though! So keep at it!

Developer

hey! thanks for posting a review about my game, i really appreciate it <3, about the walljump, I'll be implementing this in a future update of the game I'll release later on where I'll add more levels and stuff! i really appreciate this tip cuz i just realized how well my game could benefit from it

also, the entire aspect of the darkness, I'm planning to make a faster, slower and static mode of it to apply in different levels, so for example, in levels with more exploration like level 3, the darkness would be static and there would be more stuff to search and explore all the alternate paths

and once again, thanks for the criticism!
