I'm no big brain dev, but thought after running so much, I'd take a rest and give you some feedback!
The tutorial and voice over were really nice! The gameplay loop is also really interesting. The idea of collecting points, going for a highscore, reminded me of fond memories I had with games like Jetpack Joyride.
The sound work fits the game perfectly! Both the sound effects and music feel satisfying to listen to. Also, really cool effect to be able to see the character through walls! It's a nice but really important touch!
I also enjoyed the fact that the gas, whilst chasing you, doesn't permanently doom any place that it passes through, since it eventually dissipates. It'd be interesting to have a clearer visual signal to when the gas completely dissipates from an area. There were times I thought the gas was gone and ended up getting damaged because there was still a bit of gas left that was hard to see.
Another thing I noticed: to close the pause menu, I can "Resume Game" or press "ESC" again. However, when I press ESC to quit the pause menu, the camera, instead of following my mouse's movement at all times, only follows its movement when I hold left click and drag (my cursor also becomes visible when this happens). It corrects itself when I close the pause menu with the Resume Game button, but I thought it might be worth to point that out.
There were also a few times in which the gas seemed to move really quickly. I think I just didn't really get a good grasp on how the gas works.
There's some really small things I noticed that I could tell you in Discord if you want, but in an overall, the game works really really well! The models are nice, the environments are quite detailed, their variations have their own small personalities due to the presence of rooms, layouts and objects that are exclusive to some of the variations, points and powerups feel satisfying to collect and I can see a handful of pathways this game can take.
It's a game with a honestly huge amount of potential, and it's really fun to play! I had a very good time. Well done!
Got 52,000 points!
Graphisms are on point. Audio might be a little too high and subtitles for the tutorial at the beginning would have been perfect !
Gameplay is simple and understandable and I loved dashing all around the place even If I died very VERY quickly :D
I was surprised when I saw that the gas was following me more than just.. spreading everywhere I don't know if it was intended ?
On another side : Having a big optimization problem it seems. I was wondering also why the game was 6Gb but then I unzipped it... 12 Gb ? It seems a little bit too much even for a UE game. Edit : The problem was between the chair and the keyboard, my bad!
Also, fair warning : The game tried to access my network as Windows raised an alert for it. Either intended or not, it should not happen. Might want to check your game/prototype dependencies if not intended.
Thanks for the feedback!
We didn’t get time to implement a volume slider unfortunately. The gas is also meant to follow you rather than gradually fill up the entire room. It’s more of an intelligent creature than just a big cloud of gas that’s spreading, so we’ll look into how to communicate that to the player.
The optimisation is definitely something we’ll be taking a look at, too, since it’s something else we didn’t get the time to really sink our teeth into. As for the network access, I’m not sure what caused that but it’s not something we intended so we’ll see if we can track that down. I’m pretty sure it’s something to do with Unreal Engine and potentially some option or dependency as you’ve suggested, maybe some sort of Unreal Engine telemetry?
We’ve got a list of all the feedback we’ve gathered so far and we’ll be taking February to sort through it and implement changes, fixes and redesigns so that should solve most if not all of these issues.
Glad you enjoyed! :)
Thanks for the feedback!
I am not sure why the game tries to access the network, I may have packaged a plugin that tries to access the network. I suspect it might be the Metahuman Face LiveLink plugin, or possibly just the engine setting itself up for multiplayer functionality (even though RDR is not a multiplayer game).
For full disclosure, here is a full list of the plugins our unreal project uses:
"Name": "ModelingToolsEditorMode",
"Name": "ElectronicNodes",
"Name": "FlatNodes",
"Name": "NiagaraFluids",
"Name": "RigLogic",
"Name": "LiveLink",
"Name": "LiveLinkControlRig",
"Name": "AppleARKitFaceSupport",
"Name": "HairStrands",
"Name": "SoundUtilities",
"Name": "TickOptToolkit"
However, in testing a fresh package, unreal engine still tries to access the windows network. It might be a packaging setting that I have left enabled, or it could simply be that UE is designed for multiplayer games and tries to access the local network regardless. I will look into the cause of this further.
Also I have confirmed that the full title should only be 6.25GB when unzipped, could you have possibly extracted it twice, or included the zip archive in your calculation? I plan to upload a much smaller version after the jam is over, I expect it to be less than 2GB.
EDIT: After doing some digging, it seems like all Unreal engine projects will do this by default. The only way to prevent the engine attempting to access the network is to edit the c++ source and disable the TCP, UDP, ONLINE, NETWORK, and SERVER modules as unreal engine is a multiplayer engine.
At first I thought that the gas would spread and that area would be "deadzone" but seemed that I could go back, so that was fun to be able to explore more. At first it was very laggy and hard to play, went too quick I thought. But then I read your comment and lower the settings and went muuch smoother and I also scolled to get more of a 3rd person view and went much easier.
I mange to get a 42k score so happy with that. Is there any ending or endgoal?
Currently there isn’t an ending beyond trying to get the highest score. We’re planning on adding a proper ending and a story including different types of puzzles and some objectives. Right now we’re just seeing how the core mechanics and basic elements of the game function and how well they’re received. We do have plans to add more though.
Also, awesome score! I think that’s the highest anyone’s reached by quite a wide margin, excepting one of the dev team. It’s great to hear you enjoyed the game and that you found the settings useful. Hopefully when we add more levels and some new powerups you’ll enjoy it even more!
Thanks for playing! :)
Very fun and has a unique concept. The game already has a lot of potential and I look forward to seeing what the next update will be like! The tutorial is a great touch so you really get an understanding of what you need to do to help Dazza "out". The gas is very fast but that is what keeps the fast pace feel of the game especially if you have a very high score.
Great job on this! Cant wait to see what the future updates will hold :)
Thanks for the feedback! We’re looking forward to improving the experience and ironing out some of the bugs, hopefully it’ll be made even better in the coming weeks. It was awesome to see the game streamed on Twitch a little bit and the comments here have been really fun to read and helpful for knowing what to focus on next.
Had a blast with this game! The visuals and vibes are spot-on, but the real star here is the sound. The little pops for the pickups, ambient factory sounds, and the background music create a zen and quite addictive gaming experience.
Now, about the spreading gas - it packs a punch, yes, but maybe a bit too much for my taste. Slowing down the health drain, like one hit point per second, could add some wiggle room. It would be cool to dodge the edges or sprint through the cloud for a quick exit.
Overall a fun experience ^_^
Oh, and let's throw our poor factory worker a bone - some clearer exit routes, maybe? We don't want a workforce wipeout on the first day! 😜
I absolutely agree with you, the game is addictive as hell, but it also has a little way to go in making the layouts more approachable.
We planned to have exit signs and other things to guide the player towards the next door but we didn't have time to get all of that done before the submission deadline...
It is planned for a future release in the next few weeks.
Glad you had a blast, and if you play again, please feel free to share your score in the comments :)
Got a score of 14180 before the gas got me. The game was pretty fun, loved the voiceover and the sound effects were fantastic touches. I wish there were more places to explore, and the file size is a hefty as for a game jam download, but other than that absolutely no complaints.
Impressive score! I can definitely understand where you’re coming from in regards to wanting more levels. Originally we had around a dozen levels planned with a short storyline and a more extensive use of voiceovers.
Due to the time constraints we had to postpone most of that, but after the Game Jam is over we’re definitely going to consider expanding the number of levels, adding more voiceovers and improving the game’s size.
Thanks for playing our game, Nijelous!
