Welcome to the OU GDA's first mini game jam! You will have 1 full week to make whatever game you want in whatever engine you want, with the one restriction that it must contain a certain mechanic. The mechanic will be announced at the start of the jam at the GDA weekly meeting. The goal of this jam is not to make a professional, polished, ready-to-put-on-steam game. The goal is to learn how to make games using the specific mechanic, no matter how simple. We highly recommend working with others!
The mechanic for this jam is collect-a-thons! This is a throwback to the classic games like Mario, Pac-man, etc. where the whole objective is collection coins, dots, etc. This can be as simple as collection for a high score or collection to unlock new areas (e.g. SM64, Super Mario Odyssey). Let your creativity go wild!
Rules
- You may not start any work on your game until the start of the jam. You may think of ideas for your game, find libraries or resources, etc.
- You may work as one person or as multiple in a group.
- You may use any assets (sprites, models, music, etc) that you have created prior to the jam or use legal assets made by others. The development of assets and code specific to your game for this jam are what must be created after the start date.
- The theme for the jam will be announced at the start of the jam. The theme will be a mechanic rather than a genre or topic. Your game must include this mechanic. The announcement will also appear on this game jam page and our the Discord.
- This jam is non-ranked, meaning that there will be no judging or voting at the end of the jam for the "best game". Our future game jams may be ranked (with prizes?), but we want to see how much interest there is first. So no matter what state your game is in at the end of the week, submit it! We're excited to see anything and everything!
Important Resources and Tidbits
- Join the OU GDA Discord at https://discord.gg/UTTCNn2! This is where all communication will happen. The Game Jams category is where you will want to look.
- We highly recommend using Unity or GameMaker Studio for this project. These are the most common engine of our members and is where you will find the most support in our Discord.
