Difficult C (Super Challenge)
Sketch of a musical idea using 3-voice mirrored counterpoint and chiptune sounds.

Initially I thought of each line to be played with string instruments (violin, viola, cello). Since I chose category C, due to the nature of these instruments when reversed, the envelope doesn't sound the same backwards as forwards. So it seemed like a great opportunity to work with chiptune sounds (1st time) where it's possible to shape the envelope.

I think <Seres> (beings in Spanish) could work for the appearance of 3 characters represented by each of the lines.

Difficulty

C (Super Challenge)

Make something that has elements that can be listened to both backwards and forwards.

Hey, nice job on your first time with chiptunes! I liked the baroque sound of the counterpoint a lot. There was quite a bit of dissonance - something to consider if you're doing counterpoint is trying to approach and resolve those dissonances in a more "traditional", but definitely up to you if you're going a more atonal route. Great work!

Thank you Katie!! Happy you liked it!  I must confess that I like using dissonances freely haha but yes, I agree that certain parts could have a different treatment.

Really appreciate the GB feel here. I enjoyed the chord choices especially some of the darker ones. Nice work!

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it Kas!!I was holding myself back from using dissonance everywhere 😊

I can tell you typically write classic or orchestra pieces. Its great you expanded to new instruments. I kind of wish their were more moments for less tension and to let the melodies and other structures breath but other  wise well done!

Developer

Yes, I do! What you mention is something I haven't solved yet. Because of the harsh sound, making long notes didn't sound good, so I couldn't lower the tension as you say. But I agree with what you said. Now I think that some pauses or moments with fewer voices would have helped. Thank you so much for the feedback! (still waiting for the space train simulator)

Interesting! Not at all what I was expecting but it was a nice listen. It's pretty good for the constraints of the Super Challenge!

Developer

Thank you BlurryBoy! Your submission was pretty cool. I loved it!

Chiptoone !! Greath take on the ptomt but would apriciate a bit of wariation in notrlangts to spice up the melody. Cool cords bdw and good job!

Developer(+1)

I'll definitely take it into account in my next compositions. Thank you Murpur!!

The chiptune is nice but it felt a little hard to follow at times.

My favorite parts were the rare occasion that some 16th notes came in since it added some nice variety to the rhythm.

Developer

Glad you liked it Jofes! I'll be working on the harshness of the sound. Thank you!!

this was a really unique and interesting listen! Great job!

Developer

Thank you Kevin! I really liked what you did with Chiasmus btw!!

Great use of the chiptune sound to fit the hardest challenge, I thought of similar things but my composition alone isn't strong enough yet to make a track sound good haha!

It's mainly solid but I do feel like certain parts are dissonant and came out of nowhere. Although overly sticking to the rules can hurt your work, I think this one could benefit from following music theory more while keeping the use of wacky chords/notes to a tasteful degree.

Developer(+1)

Watching my sketch under the rules of counterpoint would be a huge NO (haha). But I think I know what you mean and I'll try to have more control over my taste for dissonance. Thank you very much for the feedback, I'll keep it in mind!

Nice work! The chiptune sounds really give it that classic NES feel. And the way you shaped the envelopes makes it stand out. Great job!

Developer

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!!

Great track, really enjoyed the Gameboy chiptune instrumentation (has an early-Gameboy RPG feel to it without the percussions) !
The arrangements feel pretty nice and varied, and the style works very well in reverse too (very fitting for the C difficulty strictly speaking), so great job on that !

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked it vaanrile! Yeah, it was a bit tricky to make it sound the same in both directions. But without a doubt a very fun challenge :)

Fairly nice track. Kind of feels stiff in some places but really well rounded. Good work.

Developer

Thank you so much TurtleBox!!! Can I ask you about how to improve the sound?

Very nice reversed canon! I really enjoy the modal colour of the piece combined with the chiptune timbres. Reminds me of retro games I love. Well done! :)

Developer

Really nice that it reminded you of retro games that you like! Thank you so much for your words!!

And here we meet again :D. Really had an baroque vibe going on here that fit the theme quite well. Having it in an chiptune dress makes it even a more wellcome oddity. Nicely done!

Developer(+1)

Happy to see you again Einel!! Hope you were creating cool tunes all this time haha Thank you for your words. Definitely, incorporating chiptune sounds made me discover new musical perspectives. About to listen yours!

Amazing! I do love some nice counterpoint. The use of silence makes it feel very reminiscent of a old-style chiptune when a computer could only play so many lines sounds at once, I think it adds a lot! This was a nice listen!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much TossDaCook!! That was exactly the idea. Over the past weekend I've been listening to the Pokemon Red and Blue tunes. It is a legendary OST for me!

That is cool! I love the pokemon soundtracks too! I actually ended up having a bit of inspiration from Colress's theme on mine haha

I like it! It's simple but get the job done!

Thank you so much! Glad you liked it!
