Message from the artist
For Broken Mirrors I wanted to find ways to create a palindromic recording, that is fun to listen to. So before I started composing I made a plan which parts and elements should be played normally or reversed in the first half, that would also make for an interesting second half. Afterwards I made a piano sketch of the themes I wanted to use. The biggest challenge was then recording and mixing multiple layers of tongue drum, slap bass, field recordings (like doors and curtains) and a loooot of percussion. In the end I kept refining the reverse (and other) effects and mixed and mastered the track. I hope you enjoy listening to the result! :)
Difficulty
Make something that has elements that can be listened to both backwards and forwards.

Mad respect for using real instruments! Very cohesive and intentional thing you've made.
Thank you!!! βΊοΈππ
Probably made it a bit harder on myself by doing that, but I just love the expressiveness and imperfections that real instruments bring to a track. πΈπ₯
Sound great! I really like the percussion and how you fit it with the panning. There is a nice ebb and flow, very rhythmically pleasing. This was a nice listen!
Thanks a lot, Iβm glad you like it! βΊοΈπ
I basically recorded all the percussion twice, often one recording panned hard to the right, and the other hard to the left, so I could really work with the stereo image. Iβm glad you enjoyed it! π
well you definitely made a fun song to listen to. This was Awesome.
Thanks Johnny, I'm very happy you liked it! ππ
The percussion was super great! and the reverse audio fit in very well!
great job!
Thank you, very happy to hear that!! βΊοΈππ
I really appreciate you taking the time to look at all entries, by the way! Hope to be able to do the same (or at least as many as possible), a lot of super cool stuff came out of this jam. π
Awesome track! there was so much happening but it all felt so considered and intentional, it was clear you went in with a plan and it paid off so well. I loved all the panning of different elements that just kept surprising me, before my attention came back to the rhythm and lead elements doing something else cool. I think thatβs my best description for it, just really cool! and so cool that you played live recordings and used field recordings. Great work!
Thanks a lot! I'm very glad you liked it! βΊοΈππ
So sick! Love the part after the turn where the bass "enters" (i.e. "becomes recognizable")
Thanks!!! βΊοΈπ
Yeah, that part was the most fun to make, I'm glad you like it! βΊοΈπΈ
Nice submission with great atmosphere !
I really liked how the reversed parts felt intentional in their arrangements and placements in the track (instead of having a base structure and mirroring it in the second half of the track to fit the theme), it creates a very interesting soundscape, so great job !
Thank you! βΊοΈππ
Before I started writing I tried to figure out a symmetrical structure, that would hopefully make for a natural dramaturgy. You can actually see the markers I placed before I started writing on the top of my DAW-screenshot, the parts with the "π"-smiley are the ones, that are mostly reversed. π
This was really good! This sounded super professional and well made! Amazing job!
Wow, thanks for the compliment! I'm glad you liked it! βΊοΈπ
This has such a thick and dark atmosphere with a very cool sounddesigne. Also having the reversed parts and forwarder parts mixed around makes certainly for a very interesting listening experience.
Thanks a lot! βΊοΈπ Yeah, I kept flipping stuff until the reverse also felt right. π βͺοΈ
Damm i didn't expect to hear rewerse percussion in this short of a timespan sound this good. Lowe your work
Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked it! βΊοΈπ I did some ambient palindrome stuff with a choir before, so this time I wanted to use as much percussion as possible. ππ₯
