Description
This soundtrack is for an imaginary video game called "The Wizard's Journey". It's a fantasy setting where you collect different spells in order to become stronger. There is an emphasis on exploration in this game similar to "Metroid". I wanted to invoke feelings of wonder, whimsy, and awe with this soundtrack.

This soundtrack was made using Logic Pro X, a Korg Prologue-8, and a Yamaha VSS-30.

Splash Screen:
The splash screen is hear when booting up a game, I grew up playing a lot of Gameboy/GBA games so hearing the jingle when you turn on the console is always very nostalgic for me.

Of Little Renown:
Of little renown is supposed to bring about a sense of resolve and determination. I think these kinds of tracks are something that really pulls me into games and makes them feel more meaningful when I come back to play them later on. This would be something that gets played in the intro to the game, maybe like an opening dialog or something.

Sand Wizard:
Sand Wizard is meant to be a boss theme. I wanted it to sound mysterious and also kind of spooky in a way while also giving a desert vibe. I thought it would be fun to play with the idea of a desert level by using the byzantine scale even if it's a little cliche I think it came out sounding pretty cool. That patch was actually one that I programmed on the Korg Prologue.

Don't Give Up (Continue):
I think that game over screens are something that we see a lot of so I feel like making sure that the music sounds melodic and pretty is important. I like the idea of game over being kind of a respite from the challenge but being encouraging in a way. That's what I was aiming for with Don't Give Up.

Metal Pipe Wizard:
I had this idea to take a random sound effect and make a bit-crushed sample for it on a song so I sampled this "metal pipe falling" sound effect. It's pretty silly but I think that silliness adds a bit of whimsy to the soundtrack. So this one ended up becoming another boss theme. I thought the idea of a wizard that just uses a metal pipe instead of a staff to cast spells was kind of funny 😆

New Spell:
"New Spell!" is for the moment when you obtain a new ability and encapsulates how it feels when your character progresses. I think of how there's fanfare that plays when you get upgrades in Metroid, when you get an item in Zelda, or when your Pokemon evolves. I just think it's a fun little detail in games like that and it's memorable too.

Teleportal:
Teleportal would be something like a hub area for fast travel. There's a motif from the opening track in that song. I was thinking of this as a transitory kind of aesthetic. It's hard to describe the details of it because I was in kind of a creative flow when I came up with it but I really like how it came out.

The theme "Inside my world" invokes feelings of wonder and and I wanted to use that as the inspiration for this soundtrack.

Splash Screen - Lol. Did you make a console download theme? It's creative...

Of Little Renown - Good... It sounds like the very melody that will surely be remembered by all those who "played" this game when they were a child.

SandWizard - I like that you used an "Arabic" sound for the Sand Wizard theme. Cool! And yet it sounds... Is it magical?

Don't Give Up (continue) - "Hey, don't give up! You have one more life left! The main thing: do not forget to complete the bonus levels! You won't get far on warps alone :)"

Metal Pipe Wizard - WHAT IS IT?! A METAL PIPE?! I like the industrial sound of this track... (And I'm an industrial fan, by the way)

New Spell - KABOOM

Teleportal - Synthwave-space... I like it!

You have a good use of effects to color your tracks! I liked it!

Thank you)

P.S. When will you make the game?

Really liked the raw feel this OST has! Each soundtrack has a really quirky, trippy vibe to it that I can't quite put my finger on that I really like. The standouts were all of the wizard themes and Teleportal. Teleportal is my personal favorite. It has such a calming and ethereal vibe to it that I can't get enough of.

Overall, really great submission. Keep it up!

This was an interesting experience.

I loved the style and each song serves its purpose very well. I would even give a better opinion, but I'm not good with criticism.

Overall great job

How I felt listening to Metal Pipe Wizard

Last minute rating spree

Initially setting it up as basically chiptune, more modern and distinguished textures creep inx adding a type of mystique. Is this a DOS game, or NES? Or something else altogether? The resulting mystique is very well worth a young wizard.

Thanks for listening and for the question! It's kind of meant to be a mix of old and new sounds, like you said, modern and chiptune. I'm not sure weather it would be something played on an older console or not but is meant to be reminiscent of them in a way.

Cool sounds and very vibey. I love metal pipe wizard as a person and a song

Thank you!

"Teleportal" was a personal favorite, the sweeping arps were awesome.

I think overall a lot of the tracks could use percussion in some capacity.

Great work!

Developer

Thanks for listening Slaw! And yes I agree there was a serious lack of percussion. I would love to build on these songs and add some things like that.

A fun sound track and I really enjoyed the wizards! Someone please draw the metal pipe wizard! : D Great work! (Also submitted one hour before the end of the jam! wow!)

Developer

Thank you for listening, it was fun to make! And I think Jofes has you covered on that drawing 😆

Haha, the metal pipe falling in "Metal Pipe Wizard" is amazing. I also sampled it as a joke once but you did much better than me. I love the bit-crushy stuff but the etherealness of "Teleportal" is a nice surprise as well.

Well, great minds think alike lol! I think Teleportal was probably my favorite. Thanks for checking it out 🙂

Super good submission, really like what you proposed here! Same as some others Teleportal was a small gem!

I'm not used to listen to chiptune that much, so I was surprised of how everything was so coherent and nice! Awesome job!

Developer

Thanks for listening Kev!

Teleportal was my favorite. Great tracks overall, and also kinda relaxing if that makes sense... Idk maybe that's just me. Anyway, great tracks, great submission. I'd love to play a game with this soundtrack.

Developer

Thank you so much! I think it would be really cool to make a game based on this soundtrack.

Very nice chiptune tracks, I especially like the arps in Sand Wizard. It was really satisfying with that heavy reverb.my biggest critique isn’t even about the music! I wish there was more description to read about your ideas behind the tracks (maybe you’re gonna add that later and I’m just showing my ass lol), I’d love to see where your head was at for each track. Overall you made a really cohesive OST with really economical use of material, nice work!

Thanks so much for listening and for the feedback! This is my first time doing a jam of any kind so I think it may be a little rough around the edges but at least I had fun and learned a ton at the same time. I wasn't too sure how much detail needed to be added for the description so perhaps I should update that if possible 😅

Also great question! So I wanted to explore different emotions and different situations that come up in a video game.

Yesss I honestly thought the console bootup track at the beginning was super charming and no one else I’ve rated so far has included something like that, very creative! And I hope you’re planning on adding these descriptions along with your project (you still can, the text boxes won’t be locked) because this all adds some really great depth!

You clearly have a really creative process, never stop bitcrushing random sounds!! Chopping and screwing has led me to create some of my favourite tracks, personally (including some of the tracks I submitted here lol)
