Description
The genres in this soundtrack are folk, orchestral and indie. The game is a 2D puzzle-based platformer that is heavily story focused, similar to games like Limbo and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. I used REAPER to compose this soundtrack. The plotline of the story is essentially, Cedar (the main character) grew up in a village with his mother. His father went missing when he was very little, as he was a cartographer/hunter who documented the taiga for his village's benefit. Cedar, once he was old enough to read and understand his father's maps, believed his father to still be alive given evidence in the maps. He leaves home and journeys through the forest, and the rest of the story is described through the song descriptions. Home Sweet Home is a track that plays at the beginning of the game as the player views the main character's (Cedar's) town for the first time. Cedar lives on the edge of a taiga, in a warm cozy village composed of houses hollowed out into trees. For this track I used instruments from my own home of Louisiana's Zydeco music: accordion, violin, electric guitar, a drumset, as well as a piano and some assorted orchestral percussion, to create a feeling of being home. This introduces one of the two main leitmotifs present in the game, that being the "home" leitmotif. An Ode to Wishes is a track that plays when Cedar packs rations and gear along with his trusty slingshot to run away from home and embark on a journey through the taiga to find his father, who disappeared into the woods when Cedar was a little boy, never to return. His father was a hunter and cartographer who sought out resources for his village, and Cedar, now old enough to read, sifted through his father's old maps of the forest and believes him to still be alive, deep inside the taiga. As the player takes their first steps into the forest and solves their first few puzzles, this theme plays. It introduces a new leitmotif representing "adventure/departure", which is composed of piano, celesta, glockenspiel, horn, trumpet, and various other instruments along with a choir. The track plays as a lullaby and in a 3/4 march style with the "adventure/departure" leitmotif starting it off and the previous "home" leitmotif of Home Sweet Home playing last as it fades out with a choir, representing the main character's innocence (and loss of) as he departs from his home to far away places. It also represents Cedar's wish to see his father again as the "home" leitmotif sticks around, showing that Cedar unable to let go. Just Out of Reach is a track that plays at the end of the game. After a long journey through the taiga, Cedar encounters lost souls and spirits who lead him (unbeknownst to him) to his father's grave. Cedar, unable to accept his father's fate, pleads with the spirits and forces his way into the realm of the forest's afterlife to see his father again. Cedar spots the spirit of his father and runs to him, but spirit who rules over the forest's afterlife-- a massive, emaciated humanoid creature with the legs of a deer and the head of a wolf-- grabs his father and drags him away from Cedar. Cedar races through the realm of the dead, pushing aside lost souls to reach him as the player leaps over and around obstacles.. This track is composed of heavy percussion and dissonance, contrasting Cedar's peaceful forest entry in An Ode to Wishes. The "home" and "adventure/departure" leitmotifs play under the bombardment of dissonance and battery in the form of a glockenspiel and celesta, and at the end of the piece, horns and trumpets play the "home" leitmotif, representing furthermore Cedar's inability to accept the death of his father and let go.

Message from the artist:
This is my first OST jam, and I had loads of fun working on my music and listening to others' tracks and discussing music in general. I'm definitely excited to hopefully compose for future jams and meet even more people.

Theme:

Runaway

How does it fit the theme?
This game fits the theme of "runaway" as the main character runs away from home to find his missing father in the taiga.

Home Sweet Home - It opens nice and sweet with the piano and strings, but for me the highlight is really the second part with the guitar and accordeon(!). That was a nice touch of character there.

An Ode To Wishes - This one sounds quite contemplative. I like it.

Just Out of Reach - Oooooh. Now I'm getting worried about our protagonist. Definitely getting the most runaway feeling from this one. This gives me the feeling of an escape sequence, where we must run fast to avoid disaster. Love the orchestration in this one.

My favourite was Just Out of Reach, but very closely followed by Home Sweet Home. Great soundtrack!

These are some really impressive pieces. You've picked some great instrumentation. "Just Out of Reach" played so differently than the first two. I thought I knew what kind of game I was playing... I was wrong, 'cuz it just took a hard turn to the left on with that kind of climax.

Thank you! I very much agree, Just Out Of Reach is very jarring in comparison to the first two pieces. It takes a very quick dark turn. The game itself is meant to twist and muddle the mind of the player and impose a reflection of the main character's views on the world. The main character wants so badly for his father's fate to be false that he blinds himself to it, and so the game and its music maintains a feeling of hope and innocence throughout until abruptly at the very end. I imagine Easter eggs and background details throughout the game hide the truth that the MC blinds himself to, but in the end the main character has to face the truth head on and the world and false reality he's made up for his emotional security begins to fall apart (and so it is revealed to the player very clearly through the third piece).

The sudden heavy percusssion in Home Sweet Home caught me off guard in a good way! This OST overall kind of reminds me of some of the more emotional tracks from Undertale. Strong composition! My favorite has to be Just Out of Reach. Combines a variety of emotions very well. Incredible job!

Developer

Thank you very much! I spent a lot of time on that sudden impact, and I was worried the buildup was too long. I'm really glad to hear Just Out of Reach held a variety emotions together as I was hoping for.

While there are many great submissions for this jam, it's less common that they fit into ones often very particular taste as well. This one did that for me, there's a reason "Home Sweet Home" caught my attention on the discord and the remaning 2 tracks are great as well! :)

There's something of a freebird games (to the moon, etc) vibe from the second track, unless I am thinking of something else.

Developer

Thank you, it is an honor to have fit your tastes! I think I've watched a let's play of to the moon, I'll have to check it out again.

Really nice soundtrack with great variation. I think Just Out of Reach was my favorite track I really like it’s sense of suspense. Great entry!

This was great! The "drop" in "Home Sweet Home" was very well executed, and the overall big moments of your songs really hit home! I especially loved the twist that you introduced with "Just Out of Reach", this track is so epic

First, points for teaching me a new word - 'taiga' (I had to Google it - it's a forest of the cold, subarctic region).  Second, I liked the variations in the three tracks, which each had their own stories to tell. My stand out was 'Just Out of Reach' - I'm a sucker for the pressured, hectic building-up-and-pushing-along tracks (so I'm discovering) and that one fits the bill entirely. Nice work.

Short, but really good OST. I like how it goes darker in the end, but still, my favorite would be the first one.

Wow, great job. The quality of sound is really great, and each piece has a lot of weight even when there is sparse instrumentation. Nice work!

Developer

Thank you! I was really concerned about the sound quality and spent a lot of time polishing things, as well as last-second rendering, so I'm glad to hear that.
