Description
This vibrant track tells a story with full orchestra, epic percussion, and live vocal and tin whistle performances! I decided to "go big or go home," so instead of making a bunch of smaller-scale tracks, I wrote only one-- pushing myself to my limit as a composer.
After sketching out my ideas, I iterated through orchestrating, tidying up, improving transitions, and finally, recording. I recorded the whistle parts, and ALL of the choir parts, which took forever but was absolutely worth it.
I use Reaper for my DAW, putting me in something of a minority among my other composer friends. I love it, though!

How does it fit the theme?
I feel like the word "runaway" fits the picture pretty well, so that helped guide my creative process. I chose a key signature and made instrumentation choices that matched the vibrant colors and lush details of the picture with musical equivalents. When coming up with ideas, I had the picture open as well, helping my brain stay in "scoring mode" like it is during film scoring. The piece travels through quiet, lonely soloistic sections, energetic and lush regions, and takes the pace up a notch to a bombastic climax. This journey is the one I imagined for the figure in the picture.
As far as the thematic idea of the word "runaway," my track takes the listener on an energetic but also somber journey, with both flashes of beauty and undertones of regret. When you run away from something (or somewhere), it might lead you to a new place of beauty and harmony, but you might still feel a twinge of mournful regret at what you left behind. I used the minor tonality and darker sounding sections of my piece to convey these emotional ideas. Again, the photo and word are closely tied, so I did my best to take these ideas and tell a story with the incredible emotional power of music!
