This is peak unlikely allies--agents of havoc, about as true a villain as the setting has without getting in to Your Dudes territory, being trusted because there really isn't any other option. Definitely a jam topper.

Developer

Thank you for the kind words!

Loved this one. The first paragraph was stellar. You painted each scene in story so quickly and clearly. And even though it's an unlikely allies story, I still had the moment of tension when Festus tells the daemon the fleet coordinates (what if they somehow turn on him after all??) Really well-done.

Also, the Free Radical is a fantastic name for a ship.

I'm glad you liked it! I wish I had just a little more space - I originally had a bit more drama around the whole Fleet Lykandos coordinates thing, but I wound up cutting it for word count.

I collect good spaceship names whenever I find them - from this writing jam, I'm definitely stealing She Who Howls from hydrated02's entry!

Oh heck yeah, exactly what I was looking for!

First off, before I get to anything else: I love that there was no clear villain. Kinda hard to catch, really, but people really do limit themselves greatly when it comes to options of antagonists. Now, for Age of Fantasy, I get it. There’s a lot of factions crowding the land already.

But Grimdark future? Perfect place to drop the greatest dear mankind has: the unknown.

The allyship felt genuine, two factions believably fighting against an unknowable fear.

Probably my personal favorite story so far.

Developer

Thank you! I really struggled with cutting this one down to one page, so I'm glad you think it turned out well.

Also, you probably guessed, but I typed “fear”, and Autoincorrect probably went “Oops, you silly! Let me fix that for you!”

Leading to that rather nonsensical sentence there

Really sharp metaphors, probably one of my favorite aspects of this piece. Also loved seeing some Change Demons! The idea of the "True Death" waiting in the fog was ominous. I suspect the word limit was a challenge--there feels like so much more waiting to be told in this tale. Great job!

I'm glad you liked it - I really struggled with pacing this one since I wound up with a story I was very happy with at about 1800 words. I think I pared it down while keeping most of the important beats intact but since I wrote it, it's hard for me to step back and look at it with fresh eyes.

demons always being portrayed as the antagonists has been getting tiring. I loved seeing the change demons and how they impacted the story.

Developer

Thank you, I'm glad I was able to put them in a situation where they aren't just cartoonishly evil!

Change Demons??? Oh, heck yeah! I like how this story went. The Pilot name threw me for a second, as I thought this was Plague Havoc something for a moment. Loved this tale.

Developer

I'm glad you liked it! Dwarves and Jackals seemed like they got a pretty big boost in Writing Jam popularity when their official OPR models released (and GDF Ratmen got a bit of that off the AoF Ratmen release), but my poor wormhole buddies didn't quite get the same treatment .

Very different take on one of the allies, nicely done!

Developer

Thank you! (Which one are you talking about, the elves or the daemons?)

This was awesome! A great example of unexpected allies providing a way out of a challenging situation. I particularly like the fact that you managed to evoke the setting without it explicitly being a war story--I think this adds a lot of depth

Developer

Thank you! I always try to write things that fit in well with the game, and this prompt seemed like a good way to introduce that without writing Fight Scene #35 - maybe this is why your army is Change Daemons allied with High Elf Fleets, or maybe your Firefight team is a Fleet survey team.
