That's super nice! I'm super impressed to be honnest, you're like the third person in this jam making their first game, and my first games weren't nearly as good as those I've seen around, including this one :')

I have to agree with other people here that it would be cool to find a way to reduce luck just a bit, especially for the initial engage where you can be lucky and clear a board at once (on the first stages anyway, a bit harder later), or be unlucky and lose a lot of lives "for free," which was a bit frustrating to me (but I'm not a big fan of luck anyway, so I'm not sure my opinion is super worthy here ^^'). I didn't have the patience to reach the end boss, but I still had fun playing it, that's a very cool concept :)

Cool and simple!

Like how you mix RPG elements and the simple match card game

Very original! Had fun playing it. Though i suck towards the end ahah.

Good work!

What a fun little game! I love the overall vibe, it's got a great atmosphere while not taking itself too seriously.  I enjoyed the mechanic of how to fight Cardthulu, but I agree that it is at its core a bit random.  Perhaps with more types of cards, or maybe some sort of peek mechanic or shuffle mechanic, it could rely a bit more on the player's memory.  Still, I really liked it, it was a lot of fun!  Awesome job, especially for your first game!!

Developer

Thank you! I agree, I really want to explore more mechanics to make this game funner and fairer. As it is right now these are essentially the core mechanics.

Wow, I had lots of fun with this! I played it through several times until I got to Cardthulu, but unfortunately he killed me. It seems like other people may not agree with me on this, but I feel like the enemy fighting parts have a bit of strategy to them (not clicking on the same card on the 2nd try, paying attention when the cards shuffle); it's mostly the "shop" level and the Cardthulu fight that feel too random. At least to me.

I can't believe that's your first game! It's incredible! And you didn't even use all 48 hours!? Awesome job!

Developer(+1)

:D thank you so much for the kind words! I agree with you there are definitely some patterns and strategies that are available. For instance, if you attack a card pair but don't destroy it it will retaliate on the next turn, but only the card that was selected first so you can pick them in reverse order and get another shot in without retaliation. Also clearing out the lower-level creatures means there is no room for higher levels to scurry to. But I can see how this much RNG is not for everyone.

I had so many plans for this game but had to set my goals to something achievable with the time I had. I wish I could have used up all 48 hours, but since I only really had evenings to dedicate to the game I did what I could.

I'm really glad you enjoyed the game, hope you'll check it out again once i've had more time to work out the kinks. Cheers!

I love it. It is really well polished for a cards game, the turning animation is great! A bit too luck based for me but I still enjoyed it a lot!

Nice game! With some of the suggestions implemented it will be great.

Nice simple little game. Would be nice if you didn't take damage on the first round when its completely random but I could see myself idly playing this for a while if it was on mobile. One thing I couldn't figure out is if there's any functional difference between hearts and shields?

Developer

Right now shield is pretty much extra hearts. I had planned to have the champion characters have a chance to bypass an enemies shield and chip away directly at their health. I plan to do more around this but it remained on the back burner due to time.

Nice simple mechanic that has so much potential. Very cool and polished but lacking content overall. Still a very good concept :D

Hello!

Nice game, well polished. I like the music and sfx - it's giving me some terraria vibes.
But - it's way too much rng! I think it would be great to add more tactics element to it. Especially the treasure - I never got any reward there :D

Developer(+1)

lol sorry about not receiving any rewards on the bonus round, that's happened to me on several occasions too >.< it's definitely frustrating haha. Thanks for the feedback, all this information is so valuable since there's only so much time to playtest and develop while under a time crunch :)

This game is really simple but really great. With a few additions (Shop to spend coins in,/ different types of encounters (Match 3?)) I could see this being a nice retail indie game. Well done :)

Developer

Thanks for the kind words! I do plan on making updating and expanding this game further. Thanks for playing!

That was pretty cool. I made it to the second to last area. Maybe there can be an upgrade system instead of this hire one out of three.

Developer

Thanks! I will be exploring more upgrade options and a shop pretty soon!

Wow!! The amount of polish was pretty good. Can you make this into a full game? I'd waste hours on my phone or even on PC.

This was giving me some Slay the Spire vibes somehow. Really creative use of the assets.

To conquer the randomness, maybe have more bonuses or even artifacts in the style of usual roguelikes?

Still, super fun!

Developer

Oh wow! I'm really glad you enjoyed it! The original idea was to have it be more rogue-like but I decided to scale back to be able to finish on time.  Now with the jam over I will be revisiting those aspects and hopefully release it for sale. :D

Well polished except for the bug with the boss. I like the concept, but the game is a bit too random/luck based for me. Maybe have rooms that are 3x3, but the beginning of the room shows the cards for a second so you can try to memorize them? Can see this game becoming something very fun if continued :)

Developer

That's a really great suggestion! I will definitely implement that. Cheers!

Sorry everyone, currently there is no way to escape the clutches of CARDTHULU.

In my rush to get in the final boss battle I forgot a piece. The game can still be played in it's entirety but sadly you won't get the see the "Thanks for playing page" lol you can press ESC to bring up the menu and start a new game though.

Very fun game! Is the game primarily luck? I liked the use of graphics and audio and overall level of polish.

Developer(+1)

Hi, thank you! Yeah I would say it's primarily luck. I starting with a basic memory game concept, but I wonder if it was possible to make it funner and more challenging to play. I originally wanted it to be more roguelike with pick ups  but ended up cutting the scope down significantly to actually ship something. :D

I played a little more, just wanted to say the music, sfx and UI provide a really amazing UX. Everything really drips quality.

Just a random idea: It might be a fun addition if certain cards have effects on the surrounding cards, like a bomb that damages the surrounding monsters.

Great job, the game is a lot of fun.

Developer(+1)

:D thanks for coming back to play some more! I like your idea for a bomb attack :)

Amazing game! Had to do a few runs to get to the boss, but unfortunately the boss glitched out and didn't die ): Love the polish on everything else though! 5/5, 5/5, 4/5 ;)

Developer(+1)

Oh man, I'm really glad you enjoyed it! That sucks that it glitched out >.< I will definitely be fixing that and posting it an update after the voting period. Cheers!
