Very nice game to play, the first boss fight was a little tedious but it was extremely cool that you made three seperate games in the one gamejam, I was especially impressed with the rhythm game and that they all had different mechanics. There lots of nice little touches to the game like the particle effects, books and SFX.

Developer(+1)

You made it through and that’s awesome, I think the rhythm game might have been my favorite. Thank you for playing!

Submitted

I couldn't beat the rhythm game haha

Cool boss battle game! But, very hard at the same time!

I really didn't understand how to beat the first boss with the dices, can you please provide me an hint?

Otherwise, the game is quite polish, I especially like the death animation for the player.

Overall, nice game!

Developer(+1)

The first boss just needs the 4 dice in the corner to equal the same value. Not a great mechanic without some more polish around it, but thanks for playing! I like the death animation as well

Duly noted, thank you for the information!

Game feels good, polished, just really wish the first boss was the final boss as I couldn't really beat him.  I figured out what to do, it's just a bit tedious since the swords AND your fire can change the dice.  Honestly, just turn off the fact the swords can change the number on the dice and I think it would be fair for a first boss.  I still really enjoyed what I played, I'll probably come back to it because I really want to see what the other bosses are like!

Developer

Yeah I really slipped up with the flow of fighting the first boss. Someone else suggested that I should have made the dice cycle through the numbers instead of rolling randomly, and I think that would have fixed a lot of problems and made the first boss more satisfying. Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

It happens!  You have a lot of good things going on in that game though! If the only worry is some boss balancing and you've got the movement and everything else down pat, then that's not a bad problem to have!  :D

Really fun game, who doesn't love a good boss rush?
I didn't notice the boss hp at first in the bottom, and it took me a while to notice it, so that made it really difficult to know if I was dealing damage. Maybe having a different effect that plays when they take damage versus don't take damage to really communicate the feedback would help out!

Great work overall, though, I really enjoyed it!

Developer

I appreciate you playing!!

That was a super cool entry! It played really well (although I'll admit I onfly finished it in normal difficulty ^^'), I had a good chuckle at the second boss ending, but I chose what I assume is the bad ending :( Overall it felt really polished and clean to play, with a nice atmosphere. I may try it again in hard mode to see the other ending!

Cool video about making the game, too :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and checking it out! The harder difficulty is truly very hard, but you can see both endings on normal (either use the portal or attack). Thanks again, your game was so cool!

Cool concept, but didn't love the randomness of the dice to get them to match on the first stage. It was frustrating when I would need to shoot a dice to reset it again and it would take a while. It was cool and fun though!

Developer

Yeah that was an incorrect decision on my part, thanks for playing though! I appreciate it!

Submitted

Interesting game! It would have liked the first boss to be less dependent on randomness.

Developer(+1)

I agree, that was a mistake on my part, but thanks for playing!

That last stage was really tough as you have to look on both sides of the screen for the inputs, but thats on me. This game is really really well polished and the gameplay on the bosses was really varied which kept it fun. This was a really impressive entry, nice job.

Developer

I made that stage a little too difficult, but thank you for playing through the game!

I couldn't figure out the first boss. Was there a hint or clue I missed? The gameplay was interesting, but the puzzles didn't seem to work for me.

Developer(+1)

The only thing you have to do is make sure the 4 dice in the corner are all the same value. I should have made that more clear with some hint text or something. I leaned a little too hard on the mystery haha but thank you for playing!

Submitted

The variety is very good. As you write in the description the first boss is the hardest maybe rearrange the level order to motivate the player more at the beginning. Overall a nice little game! :)

Developer

Yeah I took an approach to a quick little story where the evil is “escaping” so is working through the bosses in the “wrong” order, but I agree, it is a hard game and needs a better ramp up

Was a bit hard (or maybe i just suck)

But hey it was very well polished

Good job^^

No you don’t, it’s just hard haha, thanks for playing!

I beat the game, and chose violence over peace. The controls feel solid, and the ability to reflect swords feel awesome and powerful. I reflected all of the lingering swords into the head and dealt a ton of damage; that was very satisfying. There is a good atmosphere and theme established when reading the books and a short dialogue at the end. The glass-breaking millions of particles when I die was also very cool and it all adds to the game’s polish. I enjoyed figuring out the 1st and 2nd puzzle even after dying a few times. I loved the implementation of the 3rd level too.

The execution of the game mechanics is really good but I think you have it backwards when it comes to difficulty design. If players can’t get past the 1st level, they are not going to see what else is in your game. Also, the first level was hard for the wrong reasons. The problem comes from how the dice is randomized every time it gets hit. Sometimes it takes 5 hits to get the correct number, sometimes it takes 9 - this results in the tedium of just waiting for chance to make it happen, and is greatly exaggerated when one of the dice gets misaligned either by a stray bullet or a sword. That’s not real difficulty because all I’m doing the next 30 seconds is just shooting and waiting for the right number to come up - I can’t even use timing or skill to set it up, I had to wait and see. You can fix this by simply making it cycle through the numbers. To cater to casual players who are less-seasoned in puzzle games, you can also give hints in the book at the beginning, maybe say how this head wanted “everything to be equal” and/or have some feedback when the player gets things right in incremental stages. Lastly, I think sending players back to the main menu just because they failed causes too much of a distraction. This is after all a puzzle game; players should be encouraged to fail so they can think out of the box, but going back to main menu without any kind of feedback does not provoke any thought from the player. I feel that this the wrong idea of a challenge for a puzzle game.

I hope my criticism makes sense! Sorry for being long-winded, but it’s only because I was excited about this game. Despite the problems, I thoroughly enjoyed playing We Three Heads, and I believe it has potential seeing how good the mechanics were. Great work!

Developer

I really appreciate the fact that you played all the way through and gave such a comprehensive response. I agree with pretty much every point you made, and especially think cycling through the dice would have solved a lot of issues. My main takeaway from this jam is just to try and get several people to try it out before submission to let me know when I’m just making things hard for no real benefit to the experience. Thank you again!

Submitted

Hey. Good entry and an interesting concept :) I was a bit confused at first but when I noticed that you have to do more than just shotting at the boss it felt pretty great :)

Developer

Awesome, thanks for playing! I haven’t played yours yet but it’s on the list

I must admit I have no idea how to kill that thing but figuring out you could throw the projectiles from the wall at him was a good moment! Cool game!

Developer

Yeah the projectiles are so fun to throw and reflect, you just have to have the dice in the corner all the same value for him to be vulnerable, thanks for playing!

Submitted

good game but i find it too hard for me

Developer

I understand, but thank you for playing! Maybe I can make a post-jam version and take the difficulty down a few notches

Submitted

Fun game. Nice build up to that death explosion.  Unique puzzle aspect, but hard to tell when you have it correct.

Developer

I definitely need to get some playtesters for my next game, but I appreciate the mention of the death explosion, that was one of my favorite parts. Thanks for playing!

Submitted

The game was nicely polished but super hard, I can agree with voidsay. But overall I think it was pretty neat. 2.5 - 3.5 stars, am I being too harsh?

Developer

It can be extremely difficult, but the trick is making each boss vulnerable. The first boss is by far the hardest with the most skill required to actually keep him vulnerable by changing the dice, but after that the bosses will decrease in difficulty (which aligns with the light storytelling in the game). I appreciate the feedback though!

Submitted

ahhhh i see. Nice use of strategy here! Ive bumped it up to 3.5 - 4.5 stars! :D

Developer

Wow, thanks for taking the time to come back! I appreciate it. Your game looks awesome and I’m excited to play it this morning.

Am I missing something? I have been shooting fireballs at the head with my auto clicker for about 5 minutes now and it wont die! (Why do you guys always want to destroy my mouse?) I understand that the swords do more damage, but this takes waaaaayyy too long to defeat the first enemy!

Developer

Each boss has certain conditions that have to be met in order for them to be vulnerable… for the first boss each one of the dice in the corners has to equal the same value before he can be damaged. Without that he will be invincible. It was intended to be a small puzzle but mostly boss fight, but maybe I should have included more hints

Submitted

Oh, I was wondering what these dice where supposed to do. You should definitely make that more obvious (flashing colors screaming at you with the boss telegraphing his vulnerability). I came with a bullet hell mindset not ready for a puzzle. Gamers are dumb. When encountering a problem we work harder not smarter.

Tried it again, daim it is hard to set up the dice!

Developer

Yeah it’s definitely a hard game, but I appreciate your feedback and that you came back to try it again!

Submitted

Ok I beat the first seal. The second was a cakewalk, but the third... Yeah I think I would rather not try again. You need to work on the balancing. It is all over the place. I would also like some checkpoints/level select. I can't play one game for half a day to get the full experience there are other games in need of rating!
