Very creative! Great game!

Pretty fun! The only issue I ran into was sometimes I would just be standing there re rolling my cards until I got a usable action and the boss hitbox seems big. Good job!!

You have here a cool unique concept!

Once you get used to it, it's fun to play. I would have liked to have the cards closer to the player or have some way of telling what can you do with every card combination. Good job!

Really interesting mechanic! I like the idea of switch which cards I have available to complete a task.
I didn't really like the randomness, sometimes it felt like I was just bumbling around, waiting to get the card I need - and it was hard to react fast enough to use the cards I rolled sometimes.
But overall I had a lot of fun playing through the game. Really nice work! :)

Thanks! The randomness is a bit frustrating at times, especially since there's no real "deck" in this iteration of the game. The cards act more like dice here, but i hear you. it's something i'd want to iron out, for sure.

I was a bit confused at first during the tutorial, but once it "clicked" i had a lot of fun.  The only issue I can really see is the Queen is quite powerful and the king felt highly situational.  I'd spend a lot of time just shuffling the "deck" til i had 2 queens to speed past levels that didnt require kings.   I noticed you've designed at least some of the levels with different paths that favor different card frequencies, and that was really smart!

One way to approach things with this mechanic: Perhaps instead of making the cards random, have a limited deck of each type of card, and the player can select them as they desire, but they are only a single use.  Then tailor fit the levels to be solvable with only the cards alloted for that level.  You could even have a bonus for having cards left over at the end of the level.

Regardless, I really enjoyed this game!  Excellent work!

Developer

Thank you for playing! Your suggestion was a path i considered taking for this game. Emphasizing the "puzzle" in puzzle platformer. I went with this method as i felt it was easier for me to implement in the time allotted. If i were to expand this idea further, i'd include levels with exactly the restriction you mentioned!

Really cool mechanic, having to use all your abilities to be able to use them a second time. The card shuffle had me waiting in a few of the puzzles because I would get double kings or not enough jumps, but it was still a fun game.

Developer

Thank you for playing! Yes, it's quite frustrating getting stuck with kings when you have no enemies to use them on. If I expand on this title, I'd definitely work on mitigating those frustrations.

Fun game! really like the combination of card randomness and combat

only thing is that i managed to cheese alot of levels with the dash^^(was fun to do do though).

Beated the boss and all.^^

Thanks for making game!

Nice game; the combination of platformer and cardsgame is pretty cool. Though, I can't get past the part with the three bats (where you have to dash and kill at the same time).

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks! I think i made that level a bit too hard. it's like the dirst dash tutorial level but the gap is more precise AND you need to kill the bats. If you want a tip, try dashing and attacking at an angle or controlling your direction as you dash. those are hidden mechanics that i didn't teach that well, admittedly.

I simply got a queen, fell down below the bats and used the directional dash to arc under them and up to the other side!   Think a U shape.

Developer

Well done! I intentionally left that path in for people who saw it and felt up to the task :)

That's some good game design there, I tell ya whut.   :D

Developer

I have some flashes of brilliance ;)

This is a good concept! The controls are tight and it felt good playing this game like dashing and attacking at the same time. The tutorial levels are also very good, no nonsense, straight up gameplay, which I love. I beat it twice, it was quite engaging to me and feels quite polished. I like that it supports controllers too, which is awesome. The fast respawn after death is very much appreciated. Right now, it’s quite limited as to how different scenarios can play out due to the game jam time limit. But if you continue to work on this, and offer more opportunities for players to express themselves using different abilities and different solutions to a problem, I believe this game would do extremely well. It’s already creative and fun right now, so I think it has a lot of potential!

Thank you very much for your detailed review! It's very telling that you completed it twice, with the unintentional "victory lap" music. A.K.A.: the bug where the boss music persists after the fight is over lol.
I know many people say this about their jam titles, myself included, but this game definitely has the highest chance of being developed more after the jam is over, so i'm glad that you expressed that same sentiment!

Side note: Tetra Ho! is great and unique and i hope you work more in it, too!

Really glad someone used the deck of cards! This idea is so neat, I'd love to see it fleshed out into something bigger and better!

Thank you so much for playing! I love card games and platformers so i was surprised that no one made one already (according to Google, at least). This is my 5th game jam, but the first game I've made that i'm actually proud of :)

That's a huge milestone for you then! Congratulations!
