Really good and polished game. I like that it has different groups of levels it gives a sense of progression.

NOTE TO JUDGES

Since judging just began, I figure I should put some info here. The controls of the game are listed on the page and are told to the player in-game in the first few levels. (With the exception of pressing 'M' to return to the menu) Touch controls were a late addition and are a tad buggy, so leave them off unless you actually are using a touch screen.

The game is fairly long and difficult for a jam game, so I don't expect everyone to be able to even get close to finishing it. However, I highly suggest that everyone completes levels 1 through 5, as level 5 (the one in the screenshots that says "All Alone") introduces one of the game's core mechanics.

Additionally, by pressing the M, I and Z keys together on the title screen, you will unlock all levels. Please look at levels from all three worlds before judging art. (The first world is, imo, the best looking, but also the least creative)

Amazing, would definitely pay for a full version of this.

Ahahah I see I'm not the only one to have sunk a LOT of time in that game ^^'

I was so satisfied when I reached the end, and then... SECRET ENDING! I haven't finished the bonus levels yet, but I think I will, it's really nice and polished, solutions are super clever, I love it :) Super good work!

I finished it!! For real this time 8)

Excellent game, congrats :)

My god the puzzles are perfect, I'm making a chess game as well so I know how much of an arse it is too utilize pawn's very limited movement to make a good puzzle out of it, and this man executed it masterfully, really amazing game with a lot of depth for a jam game, really well done.

Man, this game is FANTASTIC. You literally killed 3 hours of my time today. I was so hoped to see the end screen after 2 hours, but then I decided - hey, what if I will move that king to the door and... HELL YES! I mean oh no... 1 more hour of sleepless night :) But thankfully I have completed the last level :)

This is the longest I have played in any game jam game ever.

And at first I thought this is just a simple puzzle game with a few levels, and for a few levels I wasn't really interested, but then I got hooked somehow.

All the puzzles in the game are amazing. All of them have some challenge. And it is not like they are just hard because there is no logic - no, you have the logic in every level.

And all the easter eggs you included, different pieces, all the bonus levels.. I am just in love with it.

I don't really have any more words, I just want to say that I am amazed by it and I am really glad that I checked it today, it gave me the idea of how polished the game made on a game jam could be.

Thank you for your efforts and I really hope that Miz will notice this submission :)

It is really good! The base idea is just great, and the execution just as much.

The difficulty curve is a bit steep, and I ended up getting stuck, but that's normal for a jam, and expect my game to have similar issues (I'm also a bit impatient, so there's that).

It is a really fun, original and polished game.

Developer

I agree that the difficulty could use a bit of smoothing. If you don't mind, what level did you get stuck on? I'm planning on releasing a medium-sized update once the jam is over and it'd be useful to know

It was the one with the horse and the king behind some spikes, I could take the king out of there but I didn't know what to do after that, like, I have to put the horse on the other side of the spikes of the exit but after that I don't know...

Developer(+1)

Ah! You actually have to use the rook/castle to get the king past the spikes, and the pawn needs to get another use to get things in place. I should definitely have an easier level with the knight/horse beforehand, because having it be introduced ends up implying it's more important to the puzzle than it actually is.

Damn! I saw you tweet a picture of this game. I thought this is what you were doing--and you did. I love it! There should be a whole jam dedicated to varying chess!

Thank you so much for playing but my last tweet was this https://twitter.com/threethan3/status/1288985205718515712

I got stuck at the first room with the Knight, it felt a bit weird at start (getting back to the beginning was a bit hard to get) but the mood is awesome and the puzzle are really well made, I loved the time spent on it, really well polished too congratz!

Chess with traps that's cool game over there!!

i love it

Loved every single puzzle for this. They were all difficult yet had simple solutions. The SFX created  some amazing feedback, and the Music was perfect, however a mute button for such a long game would've been nice ha. All of the mechanics were incredibly fun to play with. A "are you sure" for the Reset button would've saved me some time since I kept accidently restarting the level. But overall, it was a fantastic experience,  Great game!

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Absolutely agree on the mute button. Workaround is to mute the tab or the app, but I plan to add an actual mute button once the jam is over. Honestly, I just didn't really know how. This was my first time doing sound in Godot. Also kinda surprised someone did all the levels, did you find the secret world?

Submitted

No, I did not find this Secret World o: If I had to guess, does it has something to do with all the random places with items, like the Chest and Chestnut Tree?

Developer

Actually no, those are just little easter eggs. Level 21 (the end screen) is secretly a playable level, and can be beaten. Look closely at the edges of the screen. (You can also use the press M, I & Z on the title screen to cheat any unlock all levels, including the secret world)

It's super difficult, so I didn't want to make it feel like a necessary part of the game. But if you're interested... there is more!

Submitted(+1)

Found the hidden world thanks to your tip! Beat it and had a ton fun. The more content the better (: Great Chess puns btw!

Excellent idea. I like chess. I like puzzle games. So this is a great experience for me. Well done! Great game! :)

There seems to be a bug in the first level. I move to the tile where it explains to take control of the other piece, but then I can't move it out of the way. [lightbulb] I just realised that maybe I need to 'take control' and then kill the piece I started with, but now the game doesn't start anymore after loading.

Developer

Wonder why it doesn't start... Does the downloadable version work? I know play in browser is inherently a bit finicky and there's not a whole lot I can do now that the submission period is over. (Your lightbulb is correct, by the way)

Submitted

I did try again, and this time it did load. The previous time I did try it a couple of times, maybe I just didn't wait long enough. I was now able to complete the first level, but the whole 'taking control' it still a bit confusing. Perhaps you could explain this better in the game.

Developer

Will do if I make a proper post-jam version. In the very limited play testing I did, it wasn't an issue, but it seems a few people have had difficulty on the first few levels. Until then, I'll explain it here:
Any character you're not controlling cannot move, and is counted as being on the other team in term of movement. If you capture a piece, your current piece will swap places with it, and you will now be controlling the piece you just captured.
(The whole swapping places thing is a bit weird, I know, but its absolutely chessessary to make good puzzles, I've tried)

Submitted(+1)

The concept is really cool as a puzzle game and easy to get into.

Submitted

Really cool chess-based puzzler. Awesome to see people actually using the chess assets.

Submitted(+1)

Damn this was a great take on the chess idea, never thought about chaining the pawn into a queen in mine, very clever

I could play this for hours on end for the soundtrack alone, but no it has to have amazing gameplay as well. This is definitely the best and most innovative game I've seen so far. This could easily be a game I would pay for. Very well done and an amazing entry.

Submitted(+1)

I couldn't solve the 20th level. But man I loved the game. I played this for 3 hours continuously. Good Game !

Developer(+1)

Thats a tricky one! I actually added it pretty late because I wanted the last normal level to be extra tricky. Think I might've overdone it though
