I really liked the art and the feel of this game. The player animations are great, and I find it interesting that you have to switch between water and air to maintain your balance. The game crashes when touching an enemy, but aside from that, I've loved it.

It was fun game and I really liked the movement and there is little bugs .when the player dies and get attacked... overall Great job

it seems like time got slowed down in water

i would add drag into water movement, and make normal gravity weaker

Hi, second dev from The Last Revenant's team here, you've done an incredible job with this demo! I got swept away by some other funny-looking games that I ended up rating first, but I always intended to prioritize yours as this looked really interesting even just judging by the cover art, and I wasn't disappointed. Easily one of the best sensory experiences I've had on here, with the player's animations specifically being a highlight of my experience.

The gameplay concept as well - despite being unfinished - was really intriguing and unique. Not only the bubble shooting, but switching between the water types as well. It almost feels like Metroid Prime 2: Echoes' system of juggling between Light and Dark areas to progress through the game's world, and it gives a weird amount of structure to a game world that could otherwise feel really empty and directionless.

If I could give some constructive advice, I feel like you could still tweak the freshwater physics a little. The extremely high jump isn't necessarily bad, but I feel like you don't get enough horizontal air momentum and it feels a bit janky. Also, while I fully recognize that it's a demo, and this point didn't really affect my rating, in the future you might also want to make sure to prioritize adding some kind of health/death system to the game before releasing it, because restarting the game after every death crash got pretty frustrating while I was still learning the ropes. Otherwise, I think there's some absolutely amazing stuff on display here, and would love to see it getting a finished release!

Funny little guy I found on a rock with placeholder text :3

So this game felt fun, right off the bat with the music and goofy cuteness crab walk. Things seem great until I hit an enemy and program crashed...I see this also from other comments now. Sorry to say, that sucks that its unfinished in this kind of way.  I am giving it a solid 3.0 for effort nonetheless with everything else. Will come back to it later, when I get through all the reviews possibly.

Thanks!

Please check out and rate Chick-Magnet (also unfinished, but hopefully you can enjoy a bit of it also)

Hello! Nice game, although I don't know if I got very far, I would say I enjoyed playing your entry. The first thing I noticed was that the game kept crashing every time I touched an enemy, but hey, I guess that's one way to do a death mechanic. I also thought the dialogue was pretty fun and I enjoyed the section where you have to climb the wall using the bubble and the rock, although I didn't find if there was any other use for it.

I also got softlocked a couple of times at the bottom of the map(?) where the only way forward was through a tight corridor with an enemy and some spikes in the ceiling, and my jump was not high enough to get out of there, so the only way out was death.

A couple of other critiques I would have are that I really did not have any idea where I was supposed to go in the game, so some direction in that would be great and although the controls felt pretty good otherwise, jumping out of water felt pretty clunky and the jumping and gravity are a bit too fast for my liking when you are out of water. A minor nitpick I also have is that the sound in the section with lots of bubbles can get quite loud.

Regardless, the game was fun enough for me to keep trying after a couple of deaths and I thought the pixel art and animations were good and the double-oxygen meter mechanic was unique and has potential if expanded upon. Maybe it could work if the gameplay was more different when out of water versus in water?

Anyways, nice entry!

Hiiii!! Thanks a lot for your feedback we will definitely consider all the things you said for a future entry.  Rocks were placed in very specific locations for 2 purposes, one of them after a lot of feedback more noticeable than the other. First, to jump with the bubble and reach higher platforms, and second to crash some enemies. There was a rock in that corridor that you mentioned that could be used to remove the enemy and pass freely, but now I notice that it was not that obvious so we will put more indications to help future players know what to do in that kind of situations. Also about the bubbles, music and sfx were our last aditions to the game, and due to an error we lost a full day of progress at the endo so we had to redo a lot of things really fast. We learned from that mistake and for future entries we take more backups and prioritize music, we will reduce the noise of the bubbles and solve the crash issue with the enemy that is also caused by a sfx issue.
Also I have to say that I have played The Last Revenant and it has been a pleasant experience to navigate your map, but I have no idea how to deal with the boss haha.

That's how it usually goes, a mechanic you think is pretty obvious and then you realize that "Hmm, this is actually incredibly cryptic, how is anyone actually supposed to figure this out" haha. I guess that also happened with the boss in our game. If you are still interested in playing, you are supposed to guide the large missiles it shoots out to the large things above the boss to make them fall on it until it dies :)

This game looks and plays amazing!

Although I suffered a couple of crashes when being hit by enemies (minor bugs that can be fixed late) I must say the pixel art and animations of the game are very attractive, you should add some videos or gifs to your game's page!

Worth the time played ;)

I really enjoyed the smooth controls and animations in this game. Will definitely keep an eye on its development.  But maybe rename the zip folder to MM22 rather than wonderjam5 it gives the impression that this game was developed for a previous jam?

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your post!! and sorry about the name folder problem, we made this game for this especific jam but we worked over an old project for the wonderjam that never came out, graphics, mechanics and game design was made during the time period

We appreciate your interest in our game! We will notify you when there is news about it ;P

The controls and switching through the water is really creative! And the animations are actually amazing! The game crashes any time I touch an enemy or spike :( but the other parts are great!

Developer

Thanks for your comment and yes we know about the problem with the enemies/spikes but we'll let you know when it's fixed in a future update!

the little axolotl spinning animation is amazing, i wish there was sound but i will accept the little axolotl spinning in it's place. i went to the right at the start and managed to get a crispy jpg of a crab, which i think gave me the dash ability, but there was no way that i could find to get out of that area after i got it. i really like the bubble mechanic, and the idea of just getting guys out of your way instead of hurting them. the whole thing is very cute!

Developer(+1)

Thank you!!!! i'm so glad that that you liked the spinning animation!! also we fix the audio problem and now you can enjoy the music we made for our game :D also we have plans to make a map so you and other players don't get stuck! ;D

we are so glad that you liked the bubble mechanic too! it took a lot of effort to make it

also yes i personally love the fact that you don't need to hurt directly the enemies, in the future we are going to consider more that aspect in the level design :D

Don't forget to rate us and share our game ;p

I really liked the very cute animations and how fast you are outside the water. They have belly buttons!!!! I don't know why they needed that. But I love it!
Also the idea behind the waiter-air-balance mechanic is nice. But I think, it should charge faster. so you really need to try and keep it in balance.

I really missed sound (background & sfx), though. I don't know whether this is a bug or you simply didn't have sound.

And I did not like that you would continuously jump, if you held down space.

The bubbles, could be an animation than an upscaling. The upscaling makes it feel a little out of place.

Did I mention how much I love these adorable animations?

I am really curious into what this game will turn in the end once it is fully finished.

Developer(+1)

haha wow THANK YOU SO MUCH!! it means a lot and yes there are some bugs and things to do but we are going to consider all of your suggestions!! we really want to turn this demo into a full playeable metroidvania in the future so consider following us ;p (also i'm still playing your game, i want to complete it, really good entry btw)
