You've got many of the necessary elements here! The graphical style is consistent, although everything looks a little blocky. The music is a little sedate for an action game, but unobtrusive. The game world is interesting to explore, with branching paths, dead ends, etc.
One thing that I believe makes the game harder than intended is that there is no temporary invincibility after being hit by an enemy. This means that a single hit can basically take you from full health to death. Similarly, there are no continues or checkpoints, so the game ends each time the player dies. But there really is no need to be so strict in a modern PC game, much less in a game jam game. (Classic coin-ops were this strict so they could devour your quarters. :) )
