This game has really impressive art. The models can feel stiff during cutscenes, but the battle animations are really cool, and I like the battle music a lot.
The battles themselves are okay, though I'm not a fan of battles with only one critical path to victory and everything else leading to certain defeat. But that's just my taste and one way of seeing it. The final boss makes for a good puzzle for example, especially with the cool music.
Good job on this game ^^
Did I mention I liked the music?
This is a pretty polished looking entry! I did see that you used asset-store elements, but that's within the jam rules. Some art worked better than others (the story BGs vs the blander battlefield).
The combat was solid, though I admit, I gave up on the final fight. I felt like I was doing everything the game taught me, but still losing. I got really close, like a tick away from winning... but still lost. I just couldn't fight it again. :( (This was after quite a few attempts...)
Overall, really nice work!
When I saw the naming of this game, and the game page itself... I must admit I expected this to be a low effort submission.
But this game is an example not to judge an itch.io game by its title and page alone.
HOLY F*IN COW. Very, very very cute design. Definitely 5-star for Magical Girl and Art category. Is this made using MikuMikuDance?
The Japanese Voice Acting... FOR REAL!?!? HOW DID YOUR GAME GET JAPANESE VOICE ACTING!?!? Did you do it yourself, or is there some sort of stock Japanese voice sounds online? Or don't tell me did you hire an actual seiyuu?
Anyway, very great submission. Blew my expectations away.
P.S.: Aww... Assets store? Figures -- I suppose it's impossible to make such a detailed and cute characters in just two weeks, or five weeks at most even if you had seen this jam when it first appeared late at March. Still very excellent submission though. I have recorded my gameplay, expect it to appear in my Let's Play series of some submissions to this jam :3
ところで…気のせいかもしらんが…まさか…日本人ですか?なんかストーリーはちょっと日本の同人誌みたい…特にそのエンディング…
The first tutorial enemies made me smile a little, because after the character's tragic backstory I didn't expect the enemies to be cute flowers, haha. I liked the enemy designs and the music was nice. I couldn't figure out how to defeat the boss (the tree) though, and I just kept dying. It's a bit too difficult for me.
As for comments on how the game felt, hmm, maybe adding some sound effects during attacks would help make the game feel more energetic during fights. The text speed was a little slow for me, as well.
I liked the game, though.
yay beat the game \o/
Very fun game :)
Thank you and congratulation!
I had alot of fun figuring out how the final boss works 👍Especially because of the concept of half turns.
A bit weird graphics, the music didn't loop and the plot was edgy as hell, but I still like it.
Which browser are you on? I thought the music didn't loop, too, but it turned out to be an issue with my browser.
Wait this is just a browser issue? In which browser does the music work well? I use Firefox
It works fine in Chrome. I had issues on Waterfox, which is forked from an older version of Firefox.
Thanks! Happy to hear that
I really love the enemy designs! Are all the assets made by you? The girls are a bit too over the top for me, but I guess it's just preference.
The last fight was a bit too hard, in my opinion. Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems to me that there's a single chain of commands that you can use to defeat the boss, with no room for error. This can be very frustrating, especially in such a long fight.
I would have really enjoyed more fights before the final boss to get more time to experiment with the battle system. I actually really liked the game! Great job!
Thank you! Glad you like it,
About the assets: No, the assets are from asset store and other source.
I don't recall seeing this in any of the progress threads, so it kind of came out of nowhere and surprised me. It makes an incredibly good first impression! It's very polished and the art is quite good. I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the style, but it's very well executed.
I thought there was a bug where the music didn't loop, but it turned out to just be my browser.
Okay, so I didn't actually say I was going to come back with more detailed comments, but I always did intend to.
While the game makes a great first impression and looks very polished up front, the longer I look at it, the more it feels like an asset flip. I don't want to sound like I'm accusing you of anything, and I don't know if it actually is, but it just has that feel about it. The animations look familiar, I feel like I've seen some of the characters before, the backgrounds give me deja vu, a lot of things don't quite match and others feel like they came out of a kit. Again, I'm not saying it is an asset flip, but it has that feel to it. It doesn't ruin the game or anything, but it's not a positive impression either.
The game does feel a bit thin in places which I noticed more the second time around. The text-only flashback and ending and lack of any sort of dungeon overworld stand out. It is a game jam game, though, so you have to pick your battles and I would agree that focusing on the battles and dialogue that made it in was the right choice.
The battle system is fine- it's not my favourite in the world but it works well enough- but I hate the way the battles are balanced. It feels incredibly railroaded. There's only one path through the battle, no randomness, and zero room for error. With the tutorial battles it's not so bad, especially since you'd expect tutorial battles to be somewhat railroaded, but the final battle was a chore. It took me something like 20 times to find the one exact sequence that won the battle. It wasn't intuitive; the effectiveness of each attack felt arbitrary and the summoning mechanic came out of nowhere. It wasn't satisfying or fun, it just felt like tedious artificial difficulty. It does feel intentional, and I know some people like this sort of battle, but I hated it and it really soured my overall experience with the game.
I do like the way the tutorial battles ease you into the mechanics, but the final boss battle feels like a letdown.
The story... eh, I'd take it or leave it. It fits well enough for the themes of the jam, and it's uplifting which is a nice change in pace from a lot of the cynical stories these days, but at the same time it feels a little thin and very cliched. The music choices were fantastic, though.
I enjoyed the game overall and I think it was pretty good aside from that boss battle.
Sorry for the late reply,
Thanks man for your very detailed comment!
I did use the assets from asset store and other sources, so yeah, maybe you have seen them elsewhere and sorry if they don't quite match up together :/
About the boss battle, I wanted to make it as hard as possible, and ended up with this mechanic. But you're right, I guess not everyone enjoy figuring this out. However, despite hating this system, you tried to win this. I just want to say to you, congratulation and thanks man!
I will definitely look and play your game later :)
I think the boss battle is really going to be a love it or hate it thing. You're either going to love the challenge and puzzle aspect of it, or hate the tedium and perceived unfairness of it. It looks basically split down the middle judging by the current comments.
I kept at it because I wanted to see the ending and didn't want to replay the whole thing to get there. And then I ended up playing it through again the next day. So make of that what you will.
