So happy to see a racing game! The music and flashy visuals pumped me up and I had a great time zooming past competitors. That is, when I wasn't ramming into walls. On the "hills" it was often hard to see which direction I should be turning and for how long.
Overall nice job though. Extra kudos for the groovy title screen too!
A magical girl that turns into a car... this is giving me Utena the Movie flashbacks!
It's an enjoyable concept, and something that I don't think I've seen in any of the previous MGGJs. The racing feel is nostalgic for me, as it reminds me a lot of older racing games I played when I was a kid. I like the visual aesthetic of the game, and the energetic music fits nicely. I had a little trouble drifting well, but I was using the non-recommended keyboard setup... maybe I should dig out my dusty controller.
Great work!
The art style is eyecatching. The car mechanic is working quite well. I think it can be upscaled to a good indie racing game. Although the game is still rough as it's a game jam submission, I still feel quite enjoyable to drive through the track. My only suggestion is that, it may be better to tilt the camera a little bit so that i can see more of the road.
However, as other says, the "magical girl" part seems missing.
cute and fun racing game! love the aesthetic of the racetrack and environment. i would love to see more of the gyaru girl, it would be cool to have a bit of story before the gameplay starts to know more about her! the other cars being magical girls and having human versions as well would be so cute!!
Fun game, I really enjoyed, first racing game I've seen. good job !
This game's take on the theme is more like Freedom "Drive" lol :P
My unfunny joke aside, I love a lot of what was going on in this game!
As I was playing it, I was being reminded of those driving sections from the Sonic Adventure 2 game!
The track design + loops were my favorite parts in this game.
Had trouble at first making each checkpoint, but mastering the "art of drifting" helped with gaining more speed.
The speed lines in the corner of the game was a nice touch! Feels very "Initial D"!
I think with a few sound effects and a bit more polish, this can be an even more fun game!
Great work on this!
Haha totally agreed on the theme we wanted a Freedom Drive more than anything else lol. So glad the Sega-ness of the inspo came through, thanks for checking it out and leaving the detailed feedback! Will definitely be revising things and especially doing a sound pass on it.
Interesting take on Rad Racer.
I love the music and style.
The game lacks some important sound effects though, and every mistake feels quite fatal (there always is barely enough time to get to the next checkpoint).
Also, you could miss anything magical-girl-related if you blink at the wrong time.
100% agreed the magical-girl theming is a little shoehorned in atm. Thanks so much for the feedback! We definitely did have trouble finding the right balance between accessible fun and challenge that makes you want to keep trying. Will definitely prioritize more playtesting to find the fun side!
The backgrounds were a lot of fun, as were the track designs! The music was also really fun. I think it'd be interesting to see some more elements of the magical girl genre in the race itself - perhaps a rival, some enemies, and/or abilities. Overall, solid work!
Ty ty! Ohh rivals racing and pushing the abilities would be fun. Rivals were very present in our main ref (Outrun 2) so that's a fun post-jam feature
Fun music!
