Themes
I used the optional theme of "Unconventional Weapon" and decided to go with a game inspired by Pacifism from Geometry Wars. Instead of using a weapon to destroy enemies you have to fly through nearby gates.
I've actually made a similar style game in the past but really wanted to play with a minimal visual aesthetic and see if I could fit reasonable gameplay in the low resolution.
Tools
I used Haxe/OpenFL, Aseprite and GarageBand. It's my second time using Haxe/OpenFL for a game jam and I find it really nice to work with, enabling me to quickly iterate and end up with a nice web build.
Lessons
This is my 5th LOWREZJAM and I tried really hard this year to try and make a game that didn't feel like it was low resolution. I tried to stick to a minimal style with limited colours and I'm really happy with how the visuals turned out.

Gorgeous game, fully taking advantage of the canvas to make something so clean and readable, yet dripping with style
Solid, Great Juice, Player Movement and Soundtrack.
Nice game, I'm just awful at it :)
Enjoyed the music
Hey I had a fun time with the game! I liked all the game juice and feel that added to the depth of what on the outside, looks like a simple game. I did however fly around the screen at mach 1000, tapping the arrow key sent me across like half the screen
Appreciate you playing!
I think I should have spent a bit more time tuning the game to work at various frame rates.
Sounds like a few folks ran into some issues.
As with every game jam, lessons for next time :D
I like that it is a simple, but original concept. The game is quite juicy, I love the way particles are spread all over the place. :)
The option to pick a palette is a nice touch. :)
A proper experimental jam game, love it. The act of popping the enemies flows well into the act of collecting gems. It's good that corners of the goals are forgiving, otherwise it would be annoying. You made almost no mistakes with this one. Though, enemies spawning in my face I could live without.
Ooh this is good. Really on to something here with this gate concept. You def succeeded with your goal you wrote out, in that I forgot it was low resolution - the design was so striking, loved the menus and colours and music, and I was very absorbed in the gameplay. I'm definitely not very good at it, but I was spending a long while playing. Congrats on getting this done in such a well-realized way for a jam!!
Great implementation of an awesome game with minimalist graphics. Intuitive gameplay that doesn't grow old too fast.
Fantastic game! Nice simple rules, and it stays fresh and challenging after a bunch of plays.
The look and feel is dinstinctive and consistent, it really feels professional.
The concept here is really cool and enjoyable, the only thing that threw me off is a weird inconsistency with how the gates behave. Sometimes I can go through the black parts just fine, sometimes I explode, and this ads an infuriating element to the gameplay.
Visually and OST wise it is a really cool idea, love the palette change options. Overall a nice entry with a cool idea!
Simple but fun little arcade game. I like the simplicity and style.
wow a great arcade game, a simple idea well implemented, the game is very nervous and addictive and the progression between each attempt is real. I really enjoyed playing this game I understand what you wanted to do graphically with something very refined but I wonder what it would be like with a little more effect... but it's already great and it's so satisfying to suddenly destroy all the enemies that were sticking to you a few seconds before, and in terms of readability of the game the fact that it's minimalist makes it easier.
The concept is super fun, the speed (for keyboard) might be a bit fast. But I love the concept, aswell as the strategy element where you can wait to enter a gate till the enemies get closer to take them out. <3 Well done!
Very easy to learn and addictive game, also thanks to the music. The low resolution is utilised perfectly, every pixel counts. Did I understand correctly that earning levels doesn’t affect gameplay? You could reward levelups with new palettes.
Yeah you are correct that levels don’t affect gameplay. Rewarding new palettes is exactly what I hoped to do but ran out of time.
Thanks for playing!!
Very cool! Original and well designed.
Really liked the style, I wished the acceleration was a bit slower though.
No bugs as such but I did get stuck at the settings menu, whenever I tried to go Back, the screen would do a wipe transition and throw me back into the settings. Still pretty cool game.
Good concept but I still didn't get it - should gates kill you or not? Because sometimes you can pass them in any direction and from any side and sometimes it kills you (if I got it correctly) when you trying to pass them through black dots. Sorry, really good concept for this Jam but lacks polishing.
Thanks for giving it a try! The black portion of the gates right at the edges should kill you and so you have to go through the white portion.
I tried to make it so that it leans towards not killing you to benefit the player, but that might be making things confusing.
I probably could have tried to make that more obvious, but appreciate the feedback!
Cool game! I really like the style and sound! I had some issues navigating the menu like for some reason I couldn't really exit the options tab. Would also appreciate WASD controls, other than that great game!
