The yellow room with five red blocks (there's a screenshot of it) is unreasonably difficult, unless there's some fifth secret I haven't yet figured out. Getting past the second and fifth red blocks, specifically, where you have to flip somewhere while you're in danger of getting hit to avoid falling into one of the two pits (or escape out of the pit, but that's significantly tighter on timing)
Also! The player's position isn't rounded to the nearest visual pixel for collision detection like it is for rendering, so it's almost as if you may die randomly if you look at the spikes wrong. This is actually "unfair" to the player, whose screen looks the same yet results in different outcomes, while the large player hitbox is simply "unforgiving", something the player has to get accustomed to, but it isn't unpredictable or impossible to account for.
While that yellow room is there, I don't know if I can get under ~12 deaths or get close enough to beat the 2:30 par time. Gotten S plenty of times, V is out of reach.
I’m sorry that you had a rough time with the game. Although it’s too late to change the jam version, I will use this feedback to improve the final version of this game.
Also, I tried to make it so that the X position always rounded to the nearest pixel, but I don’t think it worked…
Thank you to the 18 people who left comments and the other 12 people who voted. I’m thankful for your feedback and will use this for a potential sequel to this game.
Hey! I made a top ten video of the games from this jam. (Spoiler alert, this game is in it)
If you like the video, please feel free to share it :)
Check it out!
Cool music
Good job friend.
Cool demake, the level design is great and I liked the additional challenges. I've never played VVVVVV and this made me want to play it next :)
This is a really fun platformer! Harsh but fair and the level design looks like it was fun to make. Nicely done!
this is pretty fun, just like VVVVVV! great music!
Very fun, well executed. Thanks!
64 deaths and 13 minutes! Woooo, I must finish... at all costs. Rapid trial and error got me through! The gravity swapping mechanic is super fun. Several times I switched the gravity and then had a second or two to really regret my decision before the character died. I loved it! The music and art are well done. Great job!
Trinkets are super fun to get!
Trinkets are super fun to get!
Nice game! I like the flipping mechanic a lot. Game is also quite challenging. I died like 30 times on the yellow map with the 5 red blocks.
The background music fits quite well.
Ooof do I suck at this game ahah. Very well done entry though, it does work very well and it feels very smooth
Nice game, I liked this reversal mechanic and quite enjoyed the spacestation level!
However there is no way I could ever beat this level in only 3 minutes haha
I should probably explain how the rank system works. You don’t have to beat the level within the time limit, doing so only increases your rank. In fact, beating the level without dying and beating the level with all of the trinkets also affect your rank. V is the best rank, with S being the next best, then A, then B.
Short and sweet!
Each screen is creative and exploring to find all the trinkets was fun
Nice level design! I'm not that good at precision platforming, but I got through the levels (at least a 100 deaths per level hehe). I like how the second level introduces a new mechanic and keeps building upon it. The music choice was on point.
The room of the second screenshot (tight yellow room with the red moving squares) was the only one I felt was a tad too unforgiving, but definitely doable.
I have never played VVVVVV before, but the whole mechanic is easy to understand, so it's the kind of game you can just pick and play. And before I forget, thanks for the generous amount of checkpoints! Def saved me.
Great job!
I like it (in a frustrated way) but can't get the last Trinket. I don't expect I would see a demake of VVVVVV but here we are.
Nice entry!
V has great level design and the challenges are fun, For example timing my flips to land on a moving platform properly. I also liked collecting the trinkets as they were fun to find!
It would be cool if the movement speed was a bit faster and if the hit boxes on the spikes could be a little smaller.
I had a blast playing through it!
amazing level design and addicting gameplay
