Did you work in a team?
Worked solo. Started August 10th so I had only one week. Was fun doing everything by myself.

Was the resolution a challenge?
Trying to make Unity render at such a low resolution was very hard!

What did you learn?
I learned about 2d platformer combat, storytelling in games and working with very limited resolutions. I also improved my pixel art and animation skills and learned what I'm able to achieve with one week of development.

Love the audio work, although some sounds were a little too loud. I liked the graphical style as well, although playing on the browser I got this weird flicker that wasn't pleasant.

Developer

Hey, thanks for the critique! Sound could really be mixed better and the graphical flickering was caused by a resolution downsampling technique I had to use to render at the right resolution. I'll keep those issues in mind next time. Thanks!

Submitted(+1)

I like the graphic style! Good job on the animations, too.

Developer

Hey, thank you! It was my first time animating with Aseprite and I gotta give it a shout out because it's amazing.

Submitted(+1)

I love the art, it's really eye pleasing. I managed to get to the end :)

Developer

Thank you so much! I hope you liked the end. The secret rooms have hints to its meaning, hope you found those as well :)

Submitted(+1)

I really enjoyed this! The sound design is solid - during combat each hit is really a punch in the gut, very satisfying. It took me a while to figure out the secret passages, and that's really nice. Also very cool are the small touches like camera panning and particles. Nice!

Developer

Thank you! I really used up all the time I had available and I'm quite happy with the level of polish I could give it. It's rough on the UI and there are some other bugs, but I think it's fun overall.

Submitted(+1)

This was cool! I liked how on some of the spike pits you'd move the camera to show both sides--just a small touch that helped out a ton given the low resolution. On the same note, the functionality you added for pressing shift to move the camera was also a great idea. Awesome job!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you found the camera pleasing. You have no idea how I fought it. There were times in which the camera was all over the place doing weird things. Luckily I managed to make it as comfortable as I could before submitting. A lot of my work time went into the camera, so I'm happy you noticed!

Great game. Was fun to play. I totally understand about getting Unity to render correctly.  A very solid exploration/combat mini-game in my opinion. Good job!

Developer(+1)

I think I would manage differently if I did it again. I'd draw a whole scene in the target resolution and then cut it into smaller sprites so that they were already in the right size. When I did it I just kind of guessed which resolution would be good for each thing and did them separately, so I had some trouble putting it together. But anyways, thank you a lot!

Graphical style is pretty neat! I really appreciated the ‘peek’ function, and wish I had thought to put it in my game lol.

Nice work!

Developer

I'm glad you liked the peek function. In some games I guess it would be kind of a cheat, but this game had a resolution that was already very claustrophobic, so I decided to make this to give the player some breathing room. Thank you!

Submitted(+1)

nice :D it worked.

In my game I got around that by just making the player character and most of the enemies like 4-6px lol

Submitted(+1)

Good game! The combat felt very kinetic. It’s very satisfying to hit the monsters. I had some trouble reading the text because of the resolution but 64x64 is hard lol. Great job!

Developer

Yeah, I totally chose the wrong font for this and didn't manage to tweak it in time. But I'm really happy that you liked the feel of the combat. Thanks!

Submitted(+1)

Enjoyed this little game! Sprite was nice looking! The text was hard to read though and I wish there was some more to the fighting. All in all good job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I was thinking of adding a combo for the player, I even drew some frames, but didn't manage to implement it. But I'll keep that in mind!

Submitted(+1)

Good game! I enjoyed this a lot! Graphics were really good, though I found the background a bit confusing and made the spikes a bit difficult to see. The camera movements made the graphics glitch a little and some of the text wasn't have great definition - would have been better with out anti-aliasing. If the fighting was developed further (e.g. different attacks, maybe a block and duck attack) it would make the fights more exciting. Great!

Developer

I had to make some graphics adjustments at the last hour so the graphics became a little glitchy, it's a shame, but I agree with you! And yes, fighting could have a little more shine to it, I'll keep that in mind. Thank you so much for the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

Good sound effects and cool animation and art! The fighting felt a little lacking but all-in-all a good game. Good job!

Developer

Yes, I feel you about the fighting. But thanks for commenting and I'm glad you liked it!

Really cool. I found the health icons hard to understand.

I love the gameplay and graphics! The whole tell thing is really cool. Very satisfying.

Developer

Yes, the health icons ended up being practically illegible. Sorry about that. But I'm glad you liked it, thanks!

I haven't finished this one (I must be missing a hint for the 4 switches), but y'know what, I keep coming back and trying again. The character animations are wonderful, and I love the minimal sound style.

Developer

Sorry about the 4 switch puzzle, I didn't manage to put a hint into the game so it's kind of brute forcing combinations until you get it right. Well, the code is 1 off, 2 on, 3 on, 4 off if you wanna see the ending!

But thank you so much!

The atmosphere was quite good, I would have liked an autosave feature

Developer

Thank you! I think autosave would be a nice addition as well. I was worried that the game might have been too short at first, so I didn't prioritize it. When I saw that it was needed, there was not enough time. But thanks, will keep that in mind!

This game creates a very curious atmosphere, discovering the hidden walls is super comfortable and the sounds fit very well, the truth is that this particular game would not be good with background music. sometimes silence is the best soundtrack. the font is sometimes difficult to read and the HUD is sometimes left in another layer and cannot be seen. This entry is so nice, i enjoyed this a lot

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! I totally agree about the sound design. I went with a more silent approach so that the music could deliberately help to tell the story at the start and at the ending. And I'm glad you found the hidden walls! It felt fun finding them out when I was play testing. I was wondering how many of them people would find.

These UI issues arose on the last hour of development as I had to downscale the UI Canvas for it to fit in the 64x64 constraint. But thanks for pointing them out, I'll keep those in mind!

Visually it is impressive, and the sounds, especially the pain scream, is pretty emotive.

After defeating the third creature I am not sure how to proceed, the gate underneath the "interact" pylon is closed, and I can't climb back up the way I fell down.

Regardless, nice entry!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! And I'm glad you liked the sound effects.

To proceed in this part you have to find a hidden wall in the ceiling in this corridor where you're trapped. If you go back and try again, keep an eye out for hidden walls!

Submitted(+1)

Ah got it, and reached the end. Wonderful!

Submitted(+1)

Health was very hard to read, other than that this was a pretty neat little game

Developer

Yeah, I feel you. Had to downscale the gem graphics I drew for the health counter at the very end and ran out of time to fix it. I had other people complain about this as well, will keep it in mind. Thanks!

Nice game, man

Congratulations!!!

Developer

Thank you!

That's a nice game, congrats. Hope soon for a mobile version.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Would have to rethink the controls for mobile, but I can try!

Congratulations son.  Great job.

Developer

Thanks! I bet no other contestant was rated by their dad, I'm so privileged
