It's amazing how you managed to create a spooky game like this with those assets. The UFO chasing you throughout the game was really creepy and brilliant. I also love the music/sfx.
Thanks! I did try to find anything remotely ufo-like (and not cartoony) among his assets, but in the end I had to settle for...an invisible UFO :D
Extremely nice! Well done making something with such great presentation in such a short time. I also liked Dr. Kenney as a little namedrop.
Unfortunately: I couldn't find the last item, maybe I'm not the best gamer out there.
I would also recommend adding some sort of audio that gets louder the closer you get to the alien, for some more spooks and pressure for the player.
I read that you had to place everything by hand, you can place the ground by code or by sizing it to a consistent size and moving it by +x size and +y size respectively until you have a complete grid.
Overall, really great work! I wasn't expecting anyone to make an atmospheric horror game in a kenney jam.
Thanks! Actually this particular set (Retro Urban) was used for a whole bunch of atmospheric horror games this jam :D It fits it quite nicely, very different/unique, for a Kenney asset.
As to the items, iirc you need to find 7, but there are 11 items total, so 4 of them are "research notes" (duds). Sometimes you'll get all 7 in a row, sometimes you'll get some notes inbetween. It's possible of course to get unlucky and be forced to actually find all 11 items, but most of the time you don't need to.
That said, two of the items are out in the forest, slightly hidden (exploration!), and one is rather unfortunately placed so that it's blocked by a building most of the time (my bad).
I had a thought that'd one of the items could be a compass-type thing that leads you to the next nearest item, one item could be a "warning beacon" type thing that warns you of the movement of the UFO, and one could be a straight-up map that just shows you the whole area (like a minimap). I also thought some of the items could be utility items, e.g. you need a crowbar to open a locked gate, or a security keycard to unlock a chest etc. That'd make the whole thing a little more 'metroidvainia-like', only giving you access to certain places once you have certain other items. But a) I didn't have time and b) it might have made it very annoying indeed to play. Ah well!
From all the games so far I've only seen yours that's a horror game, I suppose I need to play more of them!
I'll try again to get all the stuff, I just got very "lucky" with the notes I guess, haha.
I really like your item ideas, me and my jam buddy had tons of stuff we wanted to implement as well, but we ran out of time. It's so tricky to get everything in.
very nice! also I'm trying to spread the word about my game! so it would be great if every body could check it out! (and maybe even rate it!)
Hey! Thank you, and for sure, I've been trying to play everyone who's rated me and rate them back :)
Thx
Quite immersive world with the spooky music and lighting! Good that you finished the game in such a state that you can complete it although I can imagine you had more things planned.
Thanks, and I sure did have some more things planned, but it really takes forever to make even semi-presentable places when you have to slot together everything by hand (and I realize the forest is just full of z-fighting, haha. Oh well).
I was spooked, I was impressed, I was immersed, I was exploring like no tomorrow, I was running until my finger hurt not to get atomized, I chuckled, I thought what the heck am I even playing AAA games for, I fell down the map, I won. Wow. Great experience and the theme was really present here and I applaud at what you had time to achieve here.
The shadow was present at maany points in the game and increased tension, well made. First time I was like let's get to know this thing and what do you know there was some particle effects on the screen for that quick branch of the story.
Aw, thank you so much! The shadow/UFO turned out surprisingly nice, considering all it does is patrol randomly between all the points of interest (e.g. all the collectables), and then whenever you pick one up it's given your location as if it spotted you. If it's far away, it gets closer, if it's close, it suddenly gets very close :D I wonder if I should've made it a little faster still, just to absolutely force you to run...
What I didn't have enough time for was the story, which is a little unfortunate. Like, I had a whole system of picking options (there's only one currently, the very first 'who are you?'), but I didn't have time to write anything! Ah well. So it goes.
Very tense any time the shadow appeared. Fantastic work. Really strong atmosphere you achieved.
Thank you! These Kenney assets were quite different from his other fare, so it was fun to try to make something a little different using them.
I really like the atmosphere, legitimately scary when the UFO shows up and you're trying to outrun it. I found the phone really difficult to work with as clicking on it under the dialogue box can be tricky at times. Adding a way to close it with a key press or adding a button to the box would make it a bit easier. I also found a bug where after opening the phone while running, my character ended up getting locked into running east for a full 10 seconds after closing the phone. Weird bug but did not prevent me from continuing. All-in-all, great use of the assets to create something special.
Hey! The walkie-talkie button shouldn't be covered by the dialog box, this is probably a UI issue (might be solved by trying to play fullscreen) - but yeah, closing it by key press makes a lot of sense either way :) Not sure how that running-in-place bug happened, but it's not like the game has been extensively QA:d, hehe.
Thanks!
Agreed, just wish there had been some more assets in the same style! Almost all the time went to putting together the actual levels, heh.
Very creepy and interesting, love the ambience. Really nice game!
Thanks! Ambience is all I aimed for really, haha.
seriously creep game, not easy to a spooky atmosphere into a game within 48hrs, nice!
Did you manage to get hunted by the shadow? :D I have a feeling most probably didn't encounter it at all (it's a bit...random...)
Really nice environment and also scary music which fits perfectly. Really enjoyed the controls and the dialog was nice. Well done!
Thanks!
really impressive!
Thank you!
The character feels nice. It is really fun jumping around. Would be nice for more jumping puzzles. But I felt very lost in this game. The world design could help a little more in guiding the player around.
It definitely could! I was going to add more narrative breadcrumbs, but....time ran out :D So now you mainly just have to run around by yourself, and try not to fall off the edge of the world!
Brilliant idea for a horror exploration game! Nice camera angle keeps the player engaged, good job!
Thanks!
