  • Music Good opening. I think the "ticky" percussion helps suggest lots of little creatures (swarm). This feels like it encapsulates the AoE aspect of the GDD. I think a little faster tempo might push the energetic aspect of the game. Satisfying complete loop! SFX I think all three work well. The Ghoul Select feels a bit artificial, while the other two (and the music) sort of have this "dusty medieval" feel. There's an ancient quality to everything except the Ghoul Select. The Battle Cry is very nice, brings to mind a horde screaming. Overall, I appreciate the ancient feeling of this, I think it captures the setting well. Tempo is just a little slower paced than I think the gameplay might be but still works well. Thanks!
  • WOW that music submission was so impressive. Definitely incorporated a medieval feel and was really powerful. Could absolutely see this as the real theme of necro swarm. The ghouls SFX felt like it could have multiple difference purposes, I don't think I necessarily got "Ghouls" from it but that doesn't mean it couldn't be used for another reason. I wasn't quite sure with the UI error would be, if it's just meant to signal to the player that they chose something they shouldn't have. The enemy battle cry is effective.

I think this entry really captures the villain protagonist aspect of the game. It also sounds influenced by medieval period music, which I like.

I am sadly unable to open your .rar files. D: I will try again tomorrow!

Developer

I have added the files just as is. Sorry for any inconvenience!

Thank you so much! I am sorry for making you upload it again, haha. Here is my feedback:

I absolutely LOVED the music piece! It felt extremely professional and I loved the flow between textures and themes with the sound effects in between when some of the instruments would drop out. It gave me simultaneously a grungy cyberpunk/Blade Runner feel with the computer sounds and back track plus atmospheric/ancient Hades-like feel with the use of the plucked instrument. I want to just keep listening to it for a while. Gives a sense of beauty through the dread.

The SFX were also really good! I liked the battle cry, but it was a little hard to tell what was making the sounds. For instance, the file was titled enemy, but it sounded a little bit like a monster, and the synth-like distortion made it difficult to figure out. The unit select sound was quick and to the point, which is perfect for such a quick action. The sound had a cool magic feel to it. Is the UI error sound supposed to occur when someone selects something they are not supposed to? A bit unsure of the purpose, but it is another good quick sound that definitely sounds like an invalid move.

Great work on this!

I think your SFX are perfect. I was trying to do a similar enemy battle cry one, but you pulled it off better.

If it was my game, if you selected a bunch of Ghouls, I would offset the SFX and have it play for each so you could hear how many you got.

I heard what I thought was the ghoul sound in the music. Don't do that or the player may think they accidentally selected a ghoul even if they didn't.

When reading the prompt, I was imagining medieval Europe, but this is decidedly more foreign sounding.

Good background music. Enough of a melody for you to know there is one, but it is subtle enough to not get annoying too fast.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback. Good idea for the ghoul selection! You might have to say every group of 50 or so if the goal is to truly control thousands of units haha. Maybe separate sounds for larger groups?

My thoughts --

  • Music is in .ogg so I had to open it in Audacity, the only program I had that could open it -- the stipulation was MP3 -- but that aside:
    • It's got quite a prog rock take on an AOE theme and trad music, and the pulsing guitars in the background give it that drive, that sense of urgency about it.
    • This has been really well mixed.
    • The odd augmented G#s did their purpose well to remind me that this was not an AOE game, but in fact an invasion game, because otherwise this could have played in an otherwise more benign game with the instrument and melody choices (coming from a trad background, this wouldn't have been out of place in regular AOE were it not for the G#s.

All the FX were submitted as .ogg format as well, instead of the stipulated WAV. That aside --

  • The battle cry felt like that of a regular crowd, but the horn sounding behind it was eerie and unworldly. Nice touch!
  • The ghoul select FX could work under the right circumstances, but it could also feel like a cacophony of birds or a car alarm. ^_^;
  • The UI error one actually gave me a bit of a jumpscare with how piercing its mids were. I don't know if this was intended, but either way, well done.

Well done on your submissions; all the best in the jam!

Oops, my bad! I have added the correct versions of everything now! Thank you so much for your feedback, I really appreciate it! I'm glad you liked to prog rock take on trad music, I thought it would a bit risky haha.
