Welcome

To celebrate the launch of Horror Game Kit 1.5, we’re bringing you a new type of challenge! We’re providing detailed theme settings to help you enhance your game development skills by incorporating popular elements in horror game design.

Plus, you'll learn to promote your game by completing a video creation task.

Theme

 Horror Clown

Background

Analog horror meets the twisted world of clowns in this chilling game jam theme. With the latest update to the Yahaha horror game kit, we've added the new Screen Effect Package, designed to enhance your game's eerie atmosphere. We encourage everyone to experiment with these new tools in their games.

In this game jam, you’re tasked with creating a horror game that merges the unsettling style of analog horror with the creepy, unpredictable nature of clowns. Players will navigate through environments reminiscent of old VHS tapes, grainy broadcasts, and retro technology, all while being stalked by clowns that embody the darkest aspects of fear. The game should evoke a sense of dread, nostalgia, and unease as players piece together the story from fragmented, disturbing media.

Key Elements to Include:

  • Analog Horror Aesthetics: Utilize the grainy visuals, distorted audio, and retro technology that define the analog horror genre to create an atmosphere of growing dread and unease.
  • Story Background: Please create your own storyline that fits the theme.
  • Exploration and Puzzle-Solving: Players must delve into environments filled with eerie clown imagery, solving puzzles that gradually reveal the terrifying truth behind the clown phenomenon.
  • Psychological Horror: The game should emphasize psychological terror, using subtle and unsettling visuals and sounds to create a haunting experience. Clowns should appear in unexpected ways, keeping players on edge.

Hints:

  1. Research the analog horror genre to understand its unique aesthetic and how it creates fear through atmosphere and implication rather than direct scares.
  2. Use visual and audio distortion to create an immersive, unsettling experience that feels like it’s drawn from a forgotten era of media.
  3. Design the game to gradually build tension, using the slow reveal of the clowns' true nature to maximize psychological impact.
  4. Here is a video demonstration of a new feature.

2. Take a screenshot or record a video of the Hiding Place  in your game and put it on your game itch submission page.
