Nostalgia is a charming and brief game that features custom sprites for Harold and Lucius. This game offers a unique twist by casting Harold and Lucius in the roles of teachers, deviating from the traditional fantasy setting that fans might expect.

Visually, Nostalgia is quite appealing. The custom sprites are well-crafted and add a distinctive touch to the game, setting it apart from many other RPG Maker entries. The effort put into these visual elements is evident and appreciated, as they contribute significantly to the game's overall charm.

However, the gameplay is quite minimal. With very little to do in terms of interactive elements, players might find themselves wishing for more depth and complexity. The story, while serviceable, doesn’t offer much beyond its initial premise and feels somewhat underdeveloped.

The game includes two minigames, one of which stands out as interesting and engaging. Unfortunately, the other falls short, failing to capture the same level of interest or enjoyment. This inconsistency in the minigames’ quality is a slight drawback, as it affects the overall experience.

The setting of Harold and Lucius as teachers is a refreshing change and adds a unique flavor to the game. It’s an imaginative departure from their usual roles and provides a different context for these familiar characters.

In conclusion, Nostalgia is a cute and visually appealing game that offers a short, pleasant diversion. While it lacks substantial gameplay and a compelling story, the custom sprites and unique setting make it worth a look. It’s a brief but charming entry in the realm of RPG Maker games, though it leaves one wishing for a bit more.

Can I ask which one was the mini game you found enjoyable and why the other one wasn’t?

I liked the exam one where you avoid the "wrong answer" crystals to get to the "correct answer" one. I thought that one really fun and clever. The other one where you just chase down the little kids and run into them, while perfectly fitting for the storyline, was just a little too simplistic. I mean, it's fine but if there are only going to be two puzzles / mini-games, I would have liked it to be as imaginative as the other one. Now had the game been choke full of mini-games like this, I probably would've forgotten all about this one and not even have mentioned it as my focus would have likely been on other mini-games that I found more entertaining. So, if you decide to continue to work on the game and expand it, you'd be fine leaving it in ... although I guess if you're done with the game then you're also fine leaving it in. It's not that big of a deal, I just like crystal one a lot more.

Overall: Some good bones here, but could have benefitted from a more immersive narrative.

Gameplay: Bonus point for the ARG quiz. Weird way to handle it but the execution was good at least. Standard walking sim stuff outside of that.

Music: Some nice tunes here and there alongside the usual RTP stuff.

Story: Cute premise, love the idea of Harold and Lucius as teachers. Unfortunately the story didn't really come together for me. Harold and Lucius do their jobs and then that's pretty much it. Would have loved to see it tap more into the nostalgia in the title.

Graphics: Mostly RTP, but the custom sprites were nice! One nitpick: Harold and Lucius's house felt a little big and empty. Tightening up your maps may be a good idea for your future games.

Comedy: A few sensible chuckles, but only a few.

Yeah, I know the story got cut in an awkward place and doesn’t fit the title too much. Next year I’m going to expand on this universe and try to make a better story.

I can see hints of a really wholesome slice of life with Harold and Lucius, but for one reason or another it didn't make the jam deadline. It happens to the best of us 🫂
If I can share some advice that helped me in jams, is starting your development with the end, the payoff scenes first, then work on the initial setup, then the filler. Say, scenes we can see Harold and Lucius's relationship (brothers, roommates, couple, whatever), then the intro, then minigames.

Also thanks for the advice, starting with the ending is definitely a good idea. That way even if I didn’t have enough time to do all I wanted, I could write a scene to connect the ending to what I have and the story would be better. I’m absolutely doing the mini games last next year, they took too long and are a main reason I had to cut the story so much.

Heartwarming to see a day in the life of Harold the school teacher. Biggest flaw to me is I'm not sure where nostalgia comes into play. It was a bit brief to have an emotional impact for a game like this. Would have loved about2-4 times the story, and perhaps a stronger arc, but I do not regret my time spent in this world. I just want to see more facets of it.

I know the title doesn’t really reflect the game too much, but in the original story I wrote, it was a perfect fit. For next year I hope to have more time and make a longer story in this universe.

Overall: Like others said it was cute. I think it was an interesting test of a couple of mechanical concepts for game play.
Gameplay: I liked the over world battle system, I am curious to know what you used to achieve that.
Music: Theme Six for the win! The other music was nice as well.
Story: It was very basic.
Graphics: I liked the busts, they were quaint with ought being twee.
Comedy: It wasn't super funny, but that didn't detract from the overall theme.
It was a short and sweet game.

About the battle system, I used the free ARPG plugins that GGG released for MZ. Also thanks for the detailed feedback!

Very cute little slice of life adventure. Short, and not really involved as far as the player characters (other than Harold) but not bad.

I guess there wasn’t much for the player to really do, but you could actually interact with a bunch of the furniture.

Quite a cute entry, though it really feels like it ends way too soon.

I like how you provided a savepoint right before the 'quiz' since it allowed me to try for both losing the quiz and winning it. (I wonder if there's more variations within that now)

The only obvious issue/problem I have is that the crystal colors didn't really look like what the instructions said? The 'green' ones were blue while the 'red' ones were purple. Which confused me for a moment, but I'm also just tired from IRL work :P

Wish the story would have been longer but I totally understand the problem of time and cutting stuff.

Those crystals have been causing a lot of trouble… I should probably just change them to black and white if I ever do something like this again. About the quiz, what changes is that, depending on your grade, about 1 or 2 lines of dialogue are different when Harold asks Lucius about his day.

Cute litte short entry! Could be a fun idea as a collection of minigames through the slice of life of Harold and Lucius if it was a bit more fleshed out (seems like you were limited in dev time). Good effort otherwise!

Thanks a lot!

For next year I’ll possibly expand on this universe. I had even made designs for Marsha and Therese already.

I’m red-green colour blind. All the crystals looked like they were the same colour. Luckily I was screen-sharing to friends so they told me which one to aim for.

Thanks for playing!

I had actually planned to implement a setting where the crystals were black and white instead, but I didn’t have enough time. I had to submit several days earlier because I was going on vacations and couldn’t take my computer.

This one felt charming but rushed. I will say the minigames didn’t really appeal to me and it just felt like they were extending a walking simulator.

Props for the tiles and sprites, very nice albeit some of the maps were a little big and empty. The bit of story that was there was nice and casual.

I would say coulda been solid if finished but just needed more time in the oven.

The intro threw me for a loop and was well done.

I could only work on this for half the month and had to cut half the story, maybe I’ll release a version with the finished story after the jam ends.

Nice I’d love to come back to it. Getting anything submitted for a jam is hard work so congrats.

This was super cute!!!

I was a little underwhelmed in the end, I expected maybe a little more meat on the story, perhaps more of an exploration of Lucius and Harold's relationship, but once it dawned on me that's not really the kind of game this is, I enjoyed it a good deal!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks a lot!

If I’m being honest, this is only half of the story I originally wrote, but due to time I had to cut a lot of things.
