I had fun playing through this story! It definitely feels reminiscent of Grimm’s fairy tales, you captured it well. I enjoyed it throughout and thought the story was well-paced. Great job!

I liked it!

To improve the game, some suggestions might be:

For me it was fine, but for a player who may be very new to playing games, that first boss just staying still for just a little bit longer in that way with no other cue, may be a bit cryptic or confusing for some players. I thought it was fine, so I'm not sure about this being any issue, even for someone very new to playing games.

I think there might be a bug, after going in the part that diverges into three paths that change every time - after that, going back down just shows a static screen of the cabin, and I think it's not possible to play anymore after that without reloading the page and starting from the beginning. Before that point though, it was working really well.

Some more minor improvements could be there's audible functionality still happening in the background during dialogues if you press the walk or attack buttons, maybe it shouldn't be there while dialogue is playing. 

However I really did like this game. 

I was curious what would happen and died in parts even where it was pretty easy not to die, and I noticed that the game resets really cleanly and pretty close to where you were.

You did an excellent job on this game - very nice submission!

I think that although it is not finished as you wanted, they still work quite well. The music, although simple, accompanies the story in a good way, and the narrative is the best in my opinion, how the story is told gives it a touch of mystery that makes you want to know how it ends.

Although you said you couldnt develop it more I think its a very complete and well rounded experience, the different sections didnt feel boring as each one had a new mechanic and walking through the tiny gaps in the trees felt pretty nice, really felt like an adventure to me, good story telling aswell !

I enjoyed playing through this game, the mechanics were really interesting. I never thought I would be so thrilled about a log placement mechanic!

Great game! I really enjoyed the puzzle, especially the fact that you were given specific mechanics to use for it (i.e. placing and destroying logs to mark the path). Really unique idea.

Cool game, really enjoyed it. The story is fun, a couple of puzzles were not hard but interesting and overall good work even though you haven't finished it. Now, about the issues:

  • Though it is displayed how to attack and place wood, basic controls (movement) isn't displayed anywhere.
  • Grammar mistake: "running for her lif"
  • So, at the end scene, when you control two of them, you actually control the man and the girl follows you. So if you slightly go into the girl, she will start running into you without stopping and push you to one side. Not a gamebreaking but bug.
  • Another typo: "The en"

Also, I really loved how you made layering: when you are in front of mushroom, you are.. well, in front of it, you overlap it. When you are behind it, it obscures you. And it seems to apply to everything (to trees, etc.). I would really like to know how you made it. Maybe you've got some tutorials or resources that you followed when doing it? I would really appreciate if you sent me the links or explained how it's done :D

Thank you for your feedback ! For the issues you found, you're right about the basic controls and typos (really funny as the dialogues are correct in code but a few of them are displayed without the last characters I don't know why, like "The End" becoming "The En"). I didn't see the running opposite to the girl issue, quite the fun bug. Thank you for pointing it out !

As for your question, I unfortunately don't watch tutorials so I don't have resources to share with you but I'll try to explain how I did ! Basically, I put all the actors of the scenes (characters, trees, mushrooms) under a node 2D (The OnMap node on the picture) It's just a classic node2d but in the Inspector, under Ordering, I activate the "Y sort enabled". It makes it so the nodes with a Y position greater than another node is shown in front of it for all the children of this node. Now if you test it, you will probably have it working right but the limit will be wrong (the character being behind a rock but too close will show the rock in front). To correct that, when you create a new actor (like a tree) modify the offset of the sprite to align the "foot" of the sprite with the point 0,0. I often let 1 or 2 pixels to make it look better. And now it should work, everything in your game will be shown behind/ in front accordingly ! I hope I explained it right and that was your question, you can see the two images I joined to help you.
