This was fun! The lighting torches mechanic worked really well along with the cats' eyes, and the cat animations are really smooth. I only hit one small issue where you sometimes can't drop down when near the edge of the wooden platforms.

It'd be great with more lighting mechanics like mirrors, cutting ropes to swing lit chandeliers, and enemies that react to lighting (e.g. afraid of the light).

The checkpoint system was also nice and lenient, although I was expecting to only have 9 lives.

Nice submission especially for being your first one.

Controls and graphics were very nice, little bit of sound or music would have been nice, hope you can add it next time.

Game felt a little short too

You got a great little dungeon going on over here! Good job for 3 days. Would have loved to see a more interesting use of the torches- maybe your eyes adapt to the darkness and staying in a light area ruins your vision? Oh and the obvious one- music and sounds! 😁

Developer

thank you! :)

Very well made for 3 days of development!

Well done including checkpoints. I was afraid of dying and losing all my progress before I knew they were there. After dying once and learning about them, it made me want to take the risk to explore the map more and actually get all the coins.

I really wish there were sound effects. They add a lot of life to a game.

I think the night vision is interesting, but I feel it needs something more mechanically to really make it feel as the main aspect of the game.

It's a very nice platformer for 3 days of development. Keep it up!

thank you for the kind feedback! i'm glad someone noticed the checkpoints :) i agree about the sounds, it was such a bummer that i ran out of time for that. and i definitely agree about the nightvision aspect, i'll try to play around with that more if i continue development on this :)

I dont know if you create the assets, anyway the DA is good. Unfortunatly, the absence of sound effect or music hurt the athmosphere. For your 1st game jam u release a demo. It is for sure a hard stuff accomplished.

Developer(+1)

unfortunately i didn't have time to create any assets besides re-skinning a cat asset i found, i'll put a link to all the packs i used in the description, as i should've done already. i agree about the sound, really bummed i didn't get to do that :/

it's my first solo game jam, i've done one in the past, but only as the lead artist, so this was definitely a more intense experience :)  i enjoyed soloing though. thank you for the feedback!

Revisiting now it's fixed!

I thought this was quite fun! I really like the cat's eyes' directional light, and it feels pretty good to move around in a well designed level.

I think the torches lighting the areas are nice, but I think they should just automatically light up when you go past them, rather than having to click them. You should also add some sound effects next time!

Developer

thanks for revisiting and the feedback! i'm glad you liked it :) it came to my attention that lighting the torches by clicking was kind of annoying, i agree on that. and i'm definitely sad that i didn't get to add sound, i'll need better time management next time!

Submitted

I liked this, it's a nice concept and the torches to remember where you went are really good.

Sometimes the game freezes on interaction though, but maybe I'm just dumb.

Developer(+1)

thank you, i'm glad you liked it! as for the freezing, the code for the game is super messy since i was rushing for 3 days, so i'm not surprised it's buggy lol. in fact, i think i know exactly what's causing it, so hopefully that will be fixed if i continue working on the game :)

I'll be checking it for updates then!

i love the lighing of the game the art style,

but the sounds missed so unfortunate,

short container i think if there is sounds,

and more levels she will be better,

anyway good job and never give up.

Developer

thank you so much! :)

Short and sweet! The movement and animations fit really well together. As others have said, there wasn't much point to the darkness/light mechanic besides reducing annoyance from not seeing well. If you wanted to go the more casual route, I think even getting rid of the "click to light" control and just lighting torches automatically as you pass could be fun. I found myself using them as a marker of where I'd already been. Maybe that would work in more complex levels where avoiding getting lost could be part of the appeal? idk. anyway, solid game!

Developer(+1)

thank you so much :) yep, i've definitely realised there wasn't much of a point to the darkness in such a "casual" game without enemies or anything, i guess it was the first solid idea i had for the theme lol. you actually used the torches exactly as intended :) i'll definitely try to make the game a lot more interesting if i continue working on it. glad you enjoyed!

Fixing the game has been allowed, and therefore, I am inclined to do my part as well.

I think more could have been done to really lean into the idea that a cat holds an advantage in the dark. For instance, instead of a true darkness, you could use a colorblind filter instead. Another option would be to make torches appear MUCH brighter than they actually are (essentially, the difference between low light vision and darkvision).

Without enemies or even allies, however, the entire point of darkness simply cannot be expressed properly. I can only imagine that the complexity of their implementation became too much, and so environmental hazards became the working stand in.

Make no mistake, the concept here is pretty neat, but it requires a lot more from the developer to do it justice. You'll have to decide for yourself whether to keep working on this or not.

Developer

thanks for the feedback! i get what you mean, it would definitely need a lot more work and detailing (and gameplay tbh). since i really liked working on it, i'll probably continue development in my free time :) however, seeing as this is my first completely solo jam entry (even if i started on it way too late and panicked all the way through lol), i'm happy with how it came out tbh :) i'll definitely be taking what you said into consideration if i do continue working on the game!

Submitted(+1)

This is a really solid little solo entry!

The controls felt great. The level layout didn't feel ridiculously difficult. And I was able to get into it, and clear it in just a couple minutes. Which is perfect for a jam game. I'm not sure to what degree you created the assets, but either way- it all went really well together. And I liked the golden glow of the cats eyes, nice little touch.

Most importantly though! You made a game! And no doubt learned a lot. Well done. ^^

Submitted(+2)

I agree with all of these things.

Do not be discouraged by my comment, Dev. You are indeed a solo dev, and you did manage a level design. That's still a show of your skills and your current progression on the learning curve.

Submitted

Good cop, bad cop. I get you Z. ;P

Developer(+1)

thank you so much! i'm glad you enjoyed it :) i definitely learned a lot (but i mostly learned how bad i am at time management in jams lol!)

An unfortunate loss for what I can only imagine would have been a great game to play.

Developer

yeah, i was in a huge rush and didn't realise i exported the wrong thing :/ thank you though!

there is a problem in game exporting

Developer(+1)

i realised that way too late :( thanks for telling me anyway!

I think you exported the project files rather than the zipped executables!

yeah, i was rushing and didn't even realise what i did :/ thanks for telling me!
