FEAR OF THE DARK

Game Description
A mastermind-like puzzle game inspired by soundwaves of harmony

How does your game tie into the theme?
The visualisation of the puzzle game builds on the concept of orbs orbiting a closed circular waveform. Most of the game graphics like wandering spirits and hints are in the shape of an orb or circle.

Wow I came for the glowing stuff which i also like, but it is actually a pretty deep a chilling game!

The sound was crisp and beautiful, the visuals were fantastic. I'd be lying if this wasn't in the top 2 most beautiful games I've played in this entire jam.

Though sadly I'm blind when it comes to music theory :V

It's the perfect game for chilling.

Thanks for playing!

Really sorry that I couldn't play your game because I cannot play horror genre at all (T . T)

No problem at all (ノ´ヮ`)ノ*: ・゚

beautiful! the atmosphere is really calming, i loved it! my best solve (so far) was in 5 attempts! :)

Developer(+1)

Congratulations!

I think even my best try needs at least 6 attempts >_<

Really good job I reckon. Bringing some nice audio and visuals to an old classic! Only issue as others have mentioned is finding the orbs. In the end I was just spam clicking to find them. :) Great submission!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

The physical mastermind boardgame uses pegs which look like orbs when placed so it inspired me to use that for this jam!

Very cool. The visuals are amazing, and I like guessing the notes. Finding the orbs was really difficult though for some reason.

Developer

Thank you!

The orb finding process may be a nuisance but to put it in a positive way it is the brute-force prevention mechanism, haha!

Nice idea but I just couldn't work it out. Loved the visuals and the concept though!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for trying!

The game is meant to be relaxing so don't stress yourself and enjoy the generated arts :)

It took me like 5mins to properly understand what's going on, but then game turned really fun and original! Love it

Developer

Thanks for trying out the game!

I hope that your 5 mins were worth for your enjoyment :D

This one is something else, as someone else wrote, it reminds me of oscilloscopes, very original (5+), very well presented, I find the process a little confusing at times, but nevertheless fun puzzle game.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing!

I will focus more on the UI design and tutorials to reduce confusion and ambiguity next time >_<

The game sounds beautiful, and the visuals remind me of 2d oscillographics (they look stunning!). Gameplay is great too -- loved the kind of audio wordle thing that's going on. Trying to find the orbs on the curve felt a little frustrating at times, but I could imagine it being quite relaxing, too.

You are right! the algorithm is just a variant of it.
The orb finding process may be disrupting to the gameplay judging from other players as well. This cannot be easily changed for now but we will be careful of this kind of thing in the future.

Thanks for playing the game!

The feel of the game is just perfect, both in graphics and sound design. I did get pretty annoyed at the gameplay but that's mostly just me being impatient and dumb.

Developer

It is totally fine! I understand that not everyone will enjoy playing puzzle game so I actually removed the attempt limit and let people enjoy the art generation instead. Thanks for trying the game!

I loved the artistic feel for the game. I'd also love to know what the equation is that you're using to generate those curves.  (Something involving imaginary numbers, I'd imagine).  One thing I didn't like was having to hunt for the clue orbs after you make your guess.  I just ended up clicking randomly to get them, and I feel the challenge of the game is really about deducing the right notes, not hunting for the orb clues.

Your game doesn't run on Firefox for some reason.  I had to use Chrome to play it.

Developer

Thanks for playing! The intention of hunting the orbs is actually to slow down the player and ask them to enjoy the generated orbit. Normally in the conventional settings the game will have attempt limit but I decided not to have any limit. Thanks for pointing the issue out, I will add a warning about browser support later.

The equation is really simple (nothing imaginary, really) and it is called Lissajous figure. I did the 3D version with fixed projection into 2D plane.

I don't think I've played anything like this before. Listening to those haunting, sometimes discordant piano chords as I tried to figure out each combination was actually really special. That, combined with the strange patterns, makes for a game that feels almost ethereal. In the right setting, it could be very effective indeed. Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem with the audio; it mostly comes out of the left ear and there's a noticeable buzzing sound.

Developer

Thanks for pointing out the audio issue! I guess I have to work harder on controlling and combining audios.
It is always my objective to create new experience to the player. I hope you get inspired by this concept!
