I love the water and how it waves around! I also like how open the level is and how you're free to explore wherever you want. The controls could use some improvement. It would be nice to be able to look around with the mouse, at least as a second option. When holding the space bar to swim upwards, it will stop ascending if you hit any other action (looking around, moving or interacting). It needs obstacles or some kind of enemy, since you're really just walking around and there's no real challenge besides searching for the gems.

This has a lot of potential!

I liked it. Since you wrote it in unfinished, I don't know if I had to find the last gem, I didn't :) Nice work, I like to see some 3D games with Godot

Nice game. I like the nostalgic vibe and style.
BTW the old man has an impressive mustache. I wonder what's the story of that character ?

Developer

Hopefully I can tell more of it post jam!

I think the implications of only horizontal camera movement are very cool for this game. It really changes exactly how exploration can be done, as now I am forced to swim into an area if I really want to check it out. This really solidifies exploration--particularly, physically moving through the environment--as the mechanical center of the game.

Mouse look systems are of course easier to use for the player, but I don't think that an easier system like that is strictly necessary for this game. The camera as it stands right now does really work with the existing gameplay.

I like the underwater fog effect. I guess I can confirm it works on the Windows version of the game, on my computer. 😄

A fellow 3d game! Yay!

Congrats making a such big world.

My tip would be to add a kind of tracker. I'm quite good to navigate in a 3D environment, but it's not given to everybody. It can become quite frustrating searching for the last gem.

Other than that, good job!

Agreed. A map or something showing where you've been would be nice.

What a beautiful world to explore! This made me feel like I was on vacation. It really transported me to another place.

I love the old man, he looks funny.

A cool touch would've been to detect when the player is underwater and use a shader to color the entire screen slightly blue. That way you woulld get more of a feeling of being underwater.

Developer

There actually is a shader doing that. :)  I have a blue fog shader that I'm using for everything under the water.  Maybe I need to adjust it to make it more obvious.

It could be that the shader doesn't work in the html5 version, we ran into the exact same issue in our game. Some shaders won't show when playing in browser, only simple ones do.

I liked that old man model and the world is much bigger than I anticipated at first! It's a nice feeling when you're thinking you could get lost in the game :)

I think a mouse view would have been helpful to look around for the gems (even in browsers, the game can capture the mouse until you press escape or something like that so it should work)

Liked the graphics, reminded me of early age video games. Found the controls to be restrictive but smooth, great job!

I liked the exploration part of this game - felt almost like an n64 game in its aesthetic. Would like to see the level more fleshed out with things to do, maybe even some kind of help to find missing gems somehow so you're not searching for ages. Overall enjoyable and lovely to see a 3d game.

Developer

Thanks!  I was looking at games from that era - Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, Ocarina of Time and such.  They used a trim sheet technique for level design and I tried to do something similar with Blender.

Neat game! I liked exploring the environment. I thought it was interesting how you couldn’t look up or down, only with tank-controls. The realization that the world under the water line was much bigger than the few island you can see at the beginning was really cool. I would have liked a draw-distance setting, and maybe some power-ups or work on the traversal system could make exploring feel more fluid. Good job!

Thanks!  I didn't have time to implement a proper 3D look around system.  I'm actually not sure how to implement it for keyboard since all the arrow keys are currently being used.  I could do it Quake style with a mouse, but the mouse is used for other things in a web browser and other systems have poor mouse support.  I'll figure something out.

I think the level will be a lot better once I start adding some items to the currently barren seafloor.  I was hoping to have  objects emerge out of the gloom and serve as landmarks.  Adding power-ups sounds like a great idea too!
