This was pretty fun! My best score is 42. I liked the design and the volcanic planet were a cool addition. I also loved to control a galactic bull.

Developer

Wow that is way better then I've been able to do, great job!

Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for playing!

Great job! The game was simple and easy to pick up but still challenging and interesting. A perfect balance was struck!

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks for playing!

Loved it! Simple and funny.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Nice and simple! A developer that can keep their scope under control for a jam is a rarity indeed. Everything about this felt really nice, except for the somewhat jerky behaviour of entering a new planet. Excellent work.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing!

I over scoped last jam, so I kept it under control this time, lol.

Yea the jerky camera is due to changing the player y velocity when it enters a new planet. I dont think I can count it as a bug... lol but after the jam I might go back and do what I should have done and disconnect the camera from the player and have it tween between planets.

fun take on the theme, and I think bulls are very underrepresented as video game protagonists. the procedural generation would sometimes get me into impossible situations though.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing!

That's interesting someone else mentioned getting in impossible situations, I've played the game extensively and haven't see this and my setup for the generation shouldn't allow it.. Can you clarify, there are 3 types of planets, Safe (the colorful ones), Hazardous (the volcano one), and Dangerous (the sun and green gas planet). You should always have a planet that you can land on as an option. Did you get to where you only had dangerous planets, or was one Hazardous?

Submitted

most commonly it would be two dangerous and on safe one that's out of reach. I typically would have Ben able to go around if the game let me go backwards

Developer

This is very odd... I've tried to recreate this but it's not happening to me.
You are able to jump to the volcano planet, it can be difficult to get it right if it's the top right planet, I'll have to move the volcano...
The only dangerous planets are the sun and the green gas planet, but you are saying it has happened that these were you only choices to move forward? Would you mind playing again and tracking when you see the issue, possibly a screenshot? (more likely two since you can't see both planets at the same time)
Thanks! Really trying to track this down and see what's going on, it's almost game breaking, really ruins the experience if you get stuck like that.

Submitted

sure, I'll see if I can recreate it and send you a screenshot

Really cool concept and take on the Revolution theme. I like the procedural element, though I very often got in situations where I could only land on dangerous planets ^^". But it's fun to get a higher and higher score.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Just to clarify your comment, there are 3 types of planets, Safe (the colorful ones), Hazardous (the volcano one), and Dangerous (the sun and green gas planet). You should always have a planet that you can land on as an option. Did you get to where you only had dangerous planets, or was one Hazardous?

Managed to get 22 planets! It was simple and fun. I was going to see if I can hop back and forth between planets to cheese the game but I'm glad you disallowed that :) There's definitely potential to expand upon this with some more sense of progression and variations in planets. Maybe you could just randomize the planet size a bit for example or have some planets that are spinning so your speed is different.

One improvement with regards to level generation is that the volcano planets should generate to the top-right of you or if they do, they should be rotated. It's possible to still make it but it's pretty tight since you can easily jump straight into the volcano.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing! Appreciate your feedback!
Yea, there is variation to the 'safe' planets size, it's not much but a bit.
Placement of the volcano was tricky, wanted it to make it kind of hard to jump to, but the main purpose is to limit you to one round on that planet, so it could probably get moved to more of a 6 or 7 o'clock position.

Edit - Just remembered to include this: My record is 31 :-)

This is basically the same as one of the first ideas that I got for this jam, before seeing that the whole gravity thing was quite a mess to handle, at least for me, ahahah. I think that the game is a bit unforgiving, but mostly I think that the character, being horizontal, made the jumps bit counterintuitive. Anyway, with some polish this could be a really nice smartphone game, great job!

Developer(+1)

do you mean the character being wider then it is tall?

Yea, I'm starting to think an arrow would've been helpful...

You've given me some ideas. This is already able to play in browser on an android device and its ok, but making it kind of rogue like where you build up coins for upgrades or cosmetics could increase replayability.

Thanks for playing!

Submitted

Yes, that's exactly what I meant about the character.

Adding roguelike elements would be a great addition, good idea!

I love a good one button game! If the bull moved faster with ever jump this could be like an orbital canabalt. (Or, maybe it already moves faster with each jump and I just haven't made it far enough to notice?) It's already pretty challenging though. :-) Great art and music and how it all fit together.

Developer

Thanks for the input and thanks for playing!
Yea the bull doesn't move faster the longer you play, that would've been a good way to add challenge the longer you played though. I'll keep that in mind. This game may get a little post jam updating or a version 2.

As a con, the direction the bull jumps leaves me a little bit frustrated - but the changes since my first playtesting - wow! This game is a challenge! Fun! I just gave a relatively high score

Developer(+1)

Thanks, Yea it can seem a bit odd that the forward momentum stops so suddenly. I considered adding an arrow that would just point straight up to show you were you could expect to go but thought that might be a bit awkward and make the game way to easy. Thanks for coming back to see the completed project! And again thanks for playtesting during development.

11 planets, that's the best I could do, but I no longer have difficulty recognizing dangerous planets!

An even more dangerous thought is adding jump force charger by holding jump key to charge - to jump to a very far distance planet, and when u charge up, the game camera zooms out. And before u release the key, the bull keeps revolving. A concept of playing Nintendo Golf / Throwing bull dart.

Developer(+1)

That's an interesting idea, I kind of drew myself into a corner with how I generate planets though, after you hit two it makes more, so if you were able to skip one that would throw off the count. lol hacky mechanic... but it works.

Submitted

Really liked the music and the mechanic, I never saw something like that. Originality 5/5

Developer(+1)

Awesome! Thanks for that rating and thanks for playing!

Captain's Star Log - Supplemental:

1) "As we move more into deep space, we encounter an increasing amount of frozen bovine DNA scattered around. My chief science officer urges me to investigate further this strange phenomenon."

2) "We have identified the source: a strange species of suicidal bulls seems to litter the galaxy with their corpses. We have contained some frozen specimens and are running tests."

3) "Our tests show that these Galactic Bulls explore for new planets to roam by escaping planets' atmosphere with incredible vertical speed. It is unfortunate how they seem to have no way to change their trajectory once launched. The good thing is the meat is still edible and surprisingly nutritious."

4) "We have refitted our ship to harvest, process and package Galactic Meat™ across this sector. Profits are coming in nicely."

5) "as our profitable study of Galactic Bulls continues with billions of revenue, we have encountered a strange behaviour. Some of the bulls after one space jump, tend to stay on the new planet, running around in circles."

6) "We have now figured out the reason of this aberration! Rather than giving us their luscious meat, they seem to settle, and produce a chill out musical score, that plays again and again."

7) "Our new single: "Space Bass" (definitely legal and not at all connected with the Bulls) is a hit in five constellations !"

Developer

LOL!

You had me cracking up! I think this means I need to make a follow up game now were you play as this space crew. LoL

Was the comment about the bull settling on a planet and not jumping an actual glitch you came across or just a funny comment?

Submitted

haha! The bull not jumping was me wanting to enjoy the music. So instead of trying to keep moving and explore the game, I sat there doing rounds listening to the song and typing the gigantic comment.

Developer(+1)

LOL, nice.

Submitted(+1)

Surprisingly difficult! I wonder if there's some psychological reason it feels easier to screw up when jumping to about 8 or 9 o'clock rather than 12 or 3 o'clock. Nice music.

Developer

Thanks, I was actually a bit worried it would be to easy or boring. Glad you seemed to enjoy it.
Not sure what you mean about jumping to 8 or 9 o'clock rather than 12 or 3 o'clock... you shouldn't be able to jump backwards...

Did you mean 12 till 3 and 5 till 6?

Wish I could say the music was mine, just picked it from OpenGameArt.org

Submitted

Yes, i think i forgot how clocks work. I kept screwing up jumps to the bottom-right, is what I was trying to say. My brain is a bit fried.

Developer

Interesting, I wonder if there is something behind that, like increased anticipation or pressure to get the second jump right.

Submitted(+1)

Nice catchy music. Made jumping from planet to planet seems like a quest to accomplish!

I liked how you integrated the theme of revolution.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

I was a bit worried it wouldn't be clear or fit in the theme, so I'm glad you saw where my thought process was with the theme.
