How does your game fit the theme?
Catsaway takes the GMTK 2024 "Built to Scale" by utilizing in-game mechanics to represent the aspect of building to scale. The game begins on an island in which the player spawns in, and when defeating enemies, the player can expand their island and upgrade their arsenal to maximize efficiency. As the game progresses, the players will be challenged to make sure their island does not shrink and that they continuously defeat the enemies. Catsaway showcases how scale and attentiveness matters through the lens of a character expanding their island.

Interesting mix of survival and tower defense where you sacle your island, although I only survived until the 3rd minute, the game seems quite big for a jam, good work
The game did end up being way bigger than I expected lol, thanks for playing the game!!!
Cool concept and nice visuals! I think reducing costs or increasing gold income could be nice, but I really liked my playthrough!
Thank you so much for the feedback!!! Glad you liked the gameplay :D
Very cute concept! The overall theme and gameplay was really enjoyable, I felt the gold generation could have been slightly better as it was extremely difficult even getting to choose between creating new paths or building contraptions, but overall very enjoyable. Good job! :)
I did make the gold generation a bit too low since I thought gold ramped up pretty quick, but I will take this into account. Thank you so much for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it!!!
Pretty good!
Thank you!!
Cute game! Congrats on finishing your first jam!
Thank you so much! The game jam was a very fun experience for us, and I never actually expected myself to finish creating the game.
Nice tower defense style game! I like the happy tune and the cute art. I did have some trouble sometimes getting my button clicks to register, and I didn't know how to build towers (just when they get dropped by enemies or is there another way?) In my first 2 tries my waves didn't spawn any other shooters. Either way, nice submission!
Yes the upgrades for now are just random drops by enemies, and the button clicks occur sometimes because the game tries to erase other highlights first before registering the button click. These are mistakes on my part, especially since I was not able to explain the mechanics very well to the player. Glad you liked the music and art!!!
No worries! It's a gamejam submission, it's not meant to be perfect, we know it all too well for our own game as well! Still enjoyable and nicely implemented!
Got to wave 25, fun! Pretty good sound, the music is fitting but a bit repetitive, solid art pixel art. The art for the page and thumbnail is very good. Great programming, ran quickly and never lagged. Solid job team.
Thank you for the feedback regarding the music, I'll take this into account :D. I'm also quite happy about the thumbnail and banner image I find, I'm glad you liked it!!!
So cute game, love the art!!
Glad you liked it!
Really nice and fun, I enjoyed it :)
Thank you :D
A cute little game! My main feedback is how slow it takes to build up, 3 minutes in my options in effecting the gameplay felt pretty small, and upgrading buildings didn't have the feedback I needed to understand if sacrificing buildings was worth the individual upgrade.!
thats true, I was a bit too focused on implementing the mechanics that I forgot about giving more feedback towards the player. Glad you brought that up, and thanks for the feedback!
I really like the visuals!! So cute!!
Thank you!!!!
Fun game! I found the upgrade mechanics a bit confusing, but overall enjoyed playing
Thank you so much! I agree with you tho the upgrade mechanics seem a bit too complicated to understand.
Great game! It started out like a half idle game but quickly turned into a total chaos xD
Also the music and art style is really cute :D
Thank you so much!!! I'm glad you enjoyed the game :D
This is a promising game really. The music sounds like pockmon ruby and sapphire. The pixel arts and animations are well polished. I love it so much! Theme is also explained in a sophisticated way. This will be a success commerical game to launch on smart phones or steam.
Aiming at launching this as a commerical game, here're my 2 cents:
1. Add more randomness to the items. Like select one from three random items (rougelike) will force people making small decisions.
2. Coldstart - like at the beginning the game is easy with slow enemies. But once the player gets a larger island, it will be more challenging. - Maybe you already did it right?
3. The coins are not enough for me. I'm wondering if there are some ways to make some quick cash. Especially when I'm under attack - that makes me really panic.
I'm so excited to see how far can this go. Please keep polishing it and I love the game play. It is the kind of minigame I always spend all my day playing.
My sound designer and artist would for sure love seeing this comment because they did an amazing job with the game. I think adding more roguelike elements such as randomness into the game would definitely be a nice touch to the game since it'll for sure make the game feel more interactive and interesting. Balancing is also something I want to work on, because I feel like the transitions between difficulty is currently kind of large. I'll polish the game and release an updated version in the future since there are still a lot of things I want to improve on! Thank you once again for the comment!!!
Your game is fantastic, great job!
Thank you :DDDDDD Glad you liked it!!
This is the cutest thumbnail I've ever seen. Having the land be destructible is a mechanic I'm shocked I've not seen before because it fits the genre so perfectly.
Thank you for your comments! I'm glad you found the game and art enjoyable!
This game is so adorable! There are still a couple mechanics that I found to be a little unclear (upgrades, cost of building, how much damage specific weapons do) but this game has been so addictive to play! Definitely going to keep playing.
Visual clarity is something I will work harder on. I spent most of my time working on the mechanics and completely neglected making the mechanics I included easier to access, especially regarding the contraptions/ buildings. Glad you found the game fun though!
I like the theming and the mechanics of combining tower defense with building a space you can walk on! The game is hard - I wasn't able to make it too far without being eaten, and when contraptions spawned it was often too far for me to reach.
I see! The scaling of the game is something I should definitely work on! The contraptions should be able to be placed on a tile as long as you click on them (you do not need to walk over them), but I understand that it sometimes spawns outside the screen. Glad you liked the theme though, my artist worked hard on it!
The concept is great and love the cat-themed tower. I wished I could see how much it costs to upgrade a tower or what upgrading a tower does, as I was still confused on it .
That makes sense, it seems that the upgrade mechanics are a bit too complicated and confuses a lot of testers. Thank you for the comment!
I like the concept of vying for land control and trying to build towers at the same time, very cute! I just wish that either a)the cost of land expansion didn't scale so intensely that I could never get to another contraption lest the fish eat the only remaining space I have, or b) when the enemies die, the contraptions they drop spawn a little bit closer to the player so it's more feasible to place and upgrade.
Thanks for your comment! I do believe that the upgrades sometimes spawn too far from the screen for the player to click, I'll ensure that this does not happen when I repolish the game.
