Ok!... I was completely overwhelmed...

Text dumps that pass too quickly in the tutorial, on a subject way over my league in real life already...
Couldn't / didn't want to try too hard... But the presentation is goooood! I can give you that! ^^

Bad point for having put wings on your unicorn...

Developer (1 edit)

Completely agree with your critique concerning the complexity, we ran out of time  to make a nice tutorial and quickly cobbled something together last-minute, which was not great. Hopfeully we'll find some time to make a better one once the jam is over. However...

Don't say that about the unicorn. A half-breed between a unicorn dad and a pegasus mom, it spent it's life facing discrimination from both sides. Never welcome, always shunned and ridiculed, it couldn't find a place to belong. After meeting a good friend, it finally found some confidence, and auditioned for this title screen. Only to be met with more hatred and lack of understanding...

That ain't right. It ain't right at all.

I didn't reject the creature, only the fact you reduced him to a simple unicorn, as he was way more than just that... But ok, I am the bad person here...

This is a really interesting game. I appreciate the tutorial, but I would personally have benefitted from more hand-holding. Reading large paragraphs of text is tricky to take in first time. The gameplay is very smooth though, and I love the choice of music! Great work.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yes, we wanted to do a more in-depth tutorial but ended up running out of time, so we tought block of text is better than nothing :P

First of all, the webl doesn't work for me :( I tried to download and iit was all good. I like that you have an endless tutorial to chill and learn the mechanics. I like the gamepla, it's a very cool approach to the theme and thanks to the tutorial i enjoyed playing ! Good job !

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Yeah, it seems the web version bugs out depending on the system :/

Submitted

Happens..  that's why we should make a build and test it before but with 96h it's always super hard !

Submitted(+1)

This is insane for such a short time! Now I feel like I didn't do enough lol. Great work!

Developer

Thanks for the compliment! We did cram in a lot of stuff, but ended up not having enough time left to playtest/balance the game or to make a good tutorial :P

Submitted(+1)

Great art, wow! Such a big game

Developer

Thanks! Yeah, maybe a bit too big for 96 hours :P

Submitted

This is too much for my smooth brain. It looks like you have a really cool concept, and I'd love to see what this could look like with more development time, but right now even with the tutorial it's a bit cryptic.

The art is insane (seriously, that logo is incredible). The sound design is great. The description seems super interesting. I just don't know how to play.

Developer(+1)

Hey, thanks for the feedback! Indeed, we ended up with a pretty complex game and no time left for a good tutorial and/or some playtesting to cut it down to a more manageable size and make the layout more intuitive. Essentially the code is there, the graphics are there, but you start out at level 100 with no progression curve, so it's really hard to understand. We'll probably try to work some more on it after the jam to try and ease players into it.

Submitted

i feel like it might be a bit out of scope for a jam game, but I played it for a while and it’s pretty well balanced ! One thing on the style, I would disable the pixel smoothing, because it makes the pixelated text hard to read :)

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah, it ended up a bit too big, meaning with didn't have time to polishit up and make a good tutorial :P

Not really understand what to do at first but I tried my best. The idea of scaling up a company within a town is unique and into the theme as well. But I think this game might need longer gameplay to understand the scale. Might be better if there is more clear goal of the scale for every level so that the feel of scaling progression is apparent. Still a cool game, good job! :)

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yes, we ran out of time to make a good tutorial that would have allowed the player to gradually get to know the different components on each scale, and how they interact, so it ends up being really hard to get into :P

Submitted

Pretty game but I was very confused

Developer

Haha yeah, the... scale of the complexity kinda run away from us, and we didn't have time to make a good tutorial to introduce the player to all the different mechanics :P
Thanks for playing!

I’m not the greatest game designer in the world but if could give you 1 tip, would be to avoid mechanics that are too complex to grasp, specially in huge game jams, this is one has over 7k games for people to playtest (which is nearly impossible) so a quick game with a simple and clever mechanic might get more attention than a very complex game with a huge text tutorial.

Please don’t feel sad with this comment, I’m really just trying to help, believe me I’ve been reviewing games since day one and I see a lot of complex games that all comments are just “too complex but nice art!” and it makes me feel so bad for the devs that put hours into that just for people to barely play, and its not their fault, its just too many games.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, complexity definitely run away on us with this one. It seemed kinda straightforward in my head, but then it wasn't and we ran out of time and didn't have enough leftover to playtest and adjust the complexity, and the best we managed to do tutorial-wise was a big block of text, so i completely agree with your take. Still, it was a good experience and we learned some new stuff (especially in regards to the code), so i guess what i'm trying to say is we'll enjoy the good and learn from the bad ;)

Submitted

perfect, thats awesome, this is why game jams are so freaking cool, we always learn new stuff, plus we get people to play our games (that in my case usualy just sit down at my profile, rotting alone xD)

Submitted

Took me a few minutes to understand how it works, but it's a great puzzler with a lot of different things to balance and watch out for. Excellent work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot! We wanted to put in some tutorial levels but ran out of time, glad you managed to figure it out on your own :D

Submitted

Tutorial didnt click with me so i didnt know what was going on. But w music and sound effects so 5 stars! also i love your main menu. gorgeous.

Developer

Haha yeah, i get the thing with tutorials but we didn't have the time to put in a good no-text tutorial :P

Submitted

also i thought the title was Do Unicorns Have Nightmares OR Electric Mayham. Personally i prefer that one cuz its more silly

Submitted

pretty challenging, was confused at the start, but either way pretty fun game (◍•ᴗ•◍)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Yeah, we ended up putting in too many elements/mechanics, and it all kinda gets dumped on the player, so it takes a while to work out how everything fits together :P

Submitted(+1)

Once you figure the UI out it's really good! -- Just took me a while to figure out I need to buy the computer parts first lol :) I love the idea of scaling a server and the retro-y casual vibe - very fun!  Game over screen looks especially good too! Congrats!!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah, we messed up the planning and ended up not having enough time to play-test, get the layout right and make a good tutorial. Like most years :P
Glad you managed to figure it out anyway ;)

Submitted(+1)

Great entry, love the different scales of systems you have to build. I think there were a lot of concepts to grasp initially, but the end product is pretty good -- great job!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah, we run out of time to make a good tutorial, and the information-layout could use some more work, so it's kinda hard to get into :P

Submitted(+1)

I can just sit here and listen to it the whole day.

Developer

Haha yeah, the sound is quite nice

Submitted(+1)

Super tricky! But I really enjoyed it, absolutely stylish with a strong aesthetic.

Developer

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

Submitted(+1)

This is a really ambitious game and really congrats on the end results ! I wonder how big your team is, because I'm really impressed. The gameplay loop is really interesting and love how you interpreted the theme. I came for the title and I was not deceived ! Congrats :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot! Yeah, the idea was a bit too ambitious, so the code is a bit buggy at times and we didn't have time to put in a real tutorial, but glad we got the main game done in time nonethelesse. As for the size of our team, there are 2 people who worked on the graphics, and for the code there was lil' ol' me ;)

Submitted

Really impressive for a team of three, congrats !

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

I love the game design, it is a bit struggle to play, but when you got a hang of this, it will become a great game. Good Job.
Ps: I really really like the game design, but what do name of the game mean?

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah, the game is pretty complex and we didn't have enough time to make a good tutorial, so it's not easy (I added some more info in the description, but it's more of a band-aid :P. The name is a reference to Philip K. Dick's 'Do Androids dream of electric sheep', as well as the fact that successfull startups are called 'unicorns' ;)

Submitted(+1)

Loved the sound design and aesthetics!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Really happy with the visuals as well :D
