I absolutely love the idea here!
The level of polish is also quite good for a game jam (both the story-intro and the mini-map showing the hero are well done).
The difficulty ramps up fast though, and it all very much seems to be designed around a specific set of inputs that the game expects the player to have memorized. (Not really my cup of tea … though a lot of people seem to like that sort of thing, so maybe you’re on to something.)
Nice concept, my only real comment is on the controls, it was really difficult to actually get the slide to work for me, and jumping when next to a platform was trying to wall jump, so I'd just get stuck. Honestly for something made in 48 hours thats not a huge deal, I'd like to see this polished up post jam! Good entry!
Glad you liked it! I've been busy this last week, so I didn't get to go through the comments like I would've liked. The collision and controls are def a bit jankier than I would've liked. It was made in GameMaker 1 and I probably spent a good 6 hours relearning how to use it because YoYo Games removed all the documentation from their website, which cut into my polish time lol
I'm planning to port it to Godot at some point to learn the engine and polish it up a bit more.
Well I can definitely recommend Godot, I started gamedev back on GameMaker 7 way back and Godot has been my favorite for a while now, great for 2D and 3D is getting better every update. Either way good luck with the post jam polish!
WOW - Amazing art style and design, really enjoyable game <3
My only critique is related to the difficulty curve, but for a game made in 48 hours I think it's hard to not create something too easy or too difficult, so good job, really!
Feels very animated and I appreciate the multiple movement tools, but I found it quite hard to control or string them together naturally, which might be intentional since it emphasizes the difficulty of a spike trap trying to do platforming? Definitely a fun concept and fantastic work getting something of this scope in under the deadline
Thank you sooo much ;;
Yeah, youre right, the original idea was that we would make it a little bit harder for Spaiku to platform since she never was technically meant to. We realized much too late that the game ended up being way harder than intended because of that.
Hopefully we can get it all fixed up eventually <3
Interesting concept. Salute to your dedication!
super cool jump and run sort of game! Pretty hard thouh especially the sliding and also the walljumping. I think it was not necessary to prevent sliding and jumping if you already sidetouch a wall. But perhaps it would be too easy then? Difficult to find the right balance. Anyway, I had fun playing the game!
Thanks for playing! The restriction on sliding was a band-aid to prevent issues with clipping into geometry. If I had another pass I'd definitely rework collision to let me make doing a slide way easier.
Really high quality animations and overall presentation! It's very satisfying when you finally catch up to Shrimpy and smoosh him into the pavement. Like others I got stuck trying to do the slide but still a very cool game!
thank you so much!!
Im really glad you like my art and animations <33
Yeah, the controls are very precise ;w; You need to do the slide immediately when you do the charge, and its even harder to do if youre close to a wall when you do it. Unintentional, and hopefully we can fix that later
Oh the art is just fantastic, I sure enjoyed beating shrimpy. What an infuriating character. Really nice stuff!
lmao im glad you found him annoying, that was the intention <3
Thank you so much!
Lovely squishy animations, but I got stuck at the beginning of second level
the slide can be kind of hard to do, yeah ;w;
you have to do it while youre boosting, which makes it harder to do when youre near a wall, makes the input window much tighter.
Im very glad you like my squishy animations though! <3
Really cool idea. The animations are great just kind of hard to control.
thank youuu im glad you like my animations <3
yeah, the controls are a bit hard ;w; hopefully we can fix them
Love the art, both in game and the story peice. little hard to control but all the small touches in the animation and camera following the hero was really neat!
im glad you liked my art!! <3
Thanks so much for the review ;w;
I really like the art and sound! The concept is pretty neat, and the game is super reactive to inputs which makes it feel very nice. I had trouble sliding in addition to wall-jumping - it seems like the game doesn't like me sliding if I'm right next to the wall. I got there eventually, just haven't seen that mentioned by others yet ^^.
yeah, you have to do a slide pretty much directly out of a boost, which means if you hit a wall the slide is really hard to do with like a frame perfect input ;w;
thank you so so much though, I'm super glad you like the artistic stuff and the concept!
It was an unfortunate necessity to prevent the player from clipping into the wall due to the widening collision box. Post-jam I'm hoping to re-work the collision to make that no longer an issue
Very cool game! Your art style looks great and the story made me laugh. The camera following the player helped me from getting to lost. The only gripe is of course what everyone else has been saying. But overall, amazing game!
thank you much!! I'm super glad you liked the story, I had fun drawing all the funny faces
I do hope we can fix that problem, but I'm super thankful for the feedback <3
Wonderfull game)) I really like the hero and especially animations - its so fun! I can also feel the weight and climbing walls also makes sence because of the spikes. Slide is really hilarious))
I managed to finish the game, because of the advice for wall jump (holding left and right buttons). Because of small length of the levels and how easy it is to restart it was reasonably challenging.
thank you so much!! I'm super glad that the note helped you finish the game, I'm thankful <3
I'm also very glad you liked the animations and stuff, I'm super proud of how weird and wacky some of them are <3
This game has a lot of great potential, I just really wish the controls were more intuitive and forgiving because it has the groundwork to be a very fun game with a unique control set.
thank you so much <33 I'm pretty proud of what we came up with ;w;
I def hope we can iron out the control more once the jam is over
I love the comic-like style and animation. I have to agree with other comments it is challenging. The jump is very unforgiving.
Thank you <3
The jump is very hard yeah ;w; you could try holding left and right at the same time if you're willing to give it another shot!
Really amazing presentation and graphics! Tho it was really hard to play! Hope you can make it a little easier in an future update!
thank you!!
First chance we get we're definitely going to make it more refined and a bit easier I'm sure
Concept is good but it quit hard to play. I wish it jumped little bit higher
Spaiku jumps not very high since she's a spike wall, though that would help alleviate some of the issues with the difficulty I'm sure
Run or hide, Spaiku claims all
Hard! I really enjoyed the art and the concept, but the wall jump section got me good. I think giving players a little bit of "wall coyote time" would be useful, because as soon as I let go of the wall, I can't jump anymore. Good game though, congrats to the team!
thank you so much!!
Yeah, everyone's been saying the big wall jump segment is too hard ;w;
Apparently you can hold left and right at the same time to make it easier, if that helps! But I'm really glad you like the game otherwise <3
