Such a pleasant game! I love the idea of a play! I was not expecting there to be voice acting in the gmtk 23! I really enjoyed everything about this game! How many people did you cast? Very great! I love it! GG! The idea is top notch!!!!! 15/15! GG! If you have time could you check out my game? GG! I loved your game!
Thanks for the kind words! My girlfriend and me actually did all the voice acting ourselves.
Wow. This was top notch! GG!
this was so good! love the literal take on the theme, i was wondering if anyone'd do a theater/movie game. you guys doing all the voices and the core mechanic of swapping roles for every actor does make it feel like a real local theater performance :) cute art, and some of the writing is really funny. i really loved it and honestly think it's incredible!
Thank you! Yeah, apart from the obvious stuff mentioned in the video, our minds directly wandered towards a theatre theming. Writing and recording an entire play (a pretty short one to be fair, but still) as a team of two definitely was a bit of a challenge, but we had a lot of fun doing so, even if the end result is a little rough around the edges :)
it may be rough for sure, but i think that only adds to the charm of the game :) it definitely doesn't feel cringy or hard to listen to. again, great work!!
Great Idea and execution. The controls are a bit janky and it gets difficult to select someone when they are all bunched up offstage. Also maybe there can be a lose condition like when happiness goes to zero the audience leave. Still I really enjoyed it
Thank you! Yeah, the controls are pretty janky, unfortunately, mostly because of time reasons. I’ll try if I can add pixel-perfect collisions to our framework, which will hopefully help a little at least.
We consciously decided against having a lose condition since we wanted to have a rather chill vibe and didn’t want anyone to miss out on the story.
Wonderful !
Thanks a lot! :)
I'm so impressed! The idea is so creative, and overall everything is well done. I'd totally be willing to play a full game like this to follow a longer story or several shorter ones. Amazing job!
Thank you! :) A longer story might be fun, though we’d probably have to find a way to keep gameplay from getting too tedious.
Woah!! You guys did amazing work on each of the elements!!
Well made!!
Thanks a lot! :)
Ambitious idea for a short jam. I haven't played a game about stage directing before, the idea would interest me more if you made extra levels. For what there is here, your team did an awesome job!
Thank you! Interesting, I figured the concept would be more of a one trick pony, but maybe it can be expanded on in interesting ways :)
Having voices is very impressive for a jam, and I love the hand-drawn art!
Thank you! :)
Very creative game, with great presentation. Impressive to do voice acting for a jam entry. The controls to move characters on and off the stage sometimes felt off to me, and I ended up moving characters I didn't intend to. Perhaps arranging the characters on the stage was meant to be part of the game's challenge, but I found it frustrating at times when my characters would shuffle about. Mostly I am impressed with the creativity of the concept, haven't seen anything like this before. Super cool.
Thank you! :)
Yeah, we sort of go with an “it’s a feature, not a bug”-approach fit the character movement thing, but honestly, we just ran out of time to fix it unfortunately. If we should work on the game post jam, that one is definitely on top of the to-do list.
havent this work before! seems like a good potential! great job!
Thank you! :)
Came for the Queen reference, stayed for the cool game.
Loved this one! The concept is really original and the gameplay is really fun!
Cheers to the voice actors whom did an awesome work! And also to the artist! I absolutely loved that both characters of the actors had the same silhouette. Pure art.
Awesome entry guys! :)
Hah, glad the Queen reference worked on someone at least! :D
Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, I love the art as well (pretty much what makes the game) and doing some voice acting was definitely a lot of fun, I’m glad people seem to enjoy it :)
Interesting concept, but I think the controls, at least to make the characters go in and out of the stage, weren't the best ones for the game, as when we have 5 characters going in and out, it can be tricky trying to slide then in a good position to do the switch. The sound effects were a good choice, tho (I know that in theory it shouldn't be the director's job, but it fits perfectly in the theme of the game). I'd also recommend adding some sort of "cast list" before the level so the players can identify quicker which person is making the opposite character. Hope you can expand and improve on the concept, because, as far as I can remember, there aren't many games about theatre :)
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, we are very aware of the shuffling problem and the general lack of technical polish; unfortunately, we just didn’t have the time to do everything we wanted to do.
Adding a cast list is a neat idea! We’d just have to find some way to combine it with the current gameplay loop.
Really cool consept! Love the artstyle that you used. The voiceacting and story are really impressive for a game made in 48 hours. I did have a problem with the people changing there rolls. Somehow I couldn't figure out how to make them change. But great game tho!
Thanks! Not gonna lie, getting everything done in 48 hours definitely took a fair amount of crunch and we had to leave some of the technical aspects a little rough, but still happy how it turned out.
You should be able to change roles by right-clicking characters unless something went seriously wrong.
This was awesome, super creative, a lot of work went into not only voice acting, but also adding subtitles, character design, planning the whole thing out and even the shilouettes of the characters matching? Super well done!
EDIT: The story was also really fun!
Thanks for the kind words! :)
Fun fact: Apart from having a theatre setting, the matching silhouettes were actually the very first part of the game that was conceived, though not quite in a finished form yet. During our initial brainstorming session, my girlfriend doodled a first draft of Diva/Tricerajudge into her sketchbook and afterwards, the only remaining question was how on earth we could make a game that featured those characters. Definitely was a bit of a challenge, but I’m glad we went that route.
That was a very nice game! I had fun playing!
It was very different from the other (60?) games I have reviewed so far! Very refreshing!
Congrats on your finished game! The graphics are really nice too!
Thank you, glad you had fun and glad you liked the artwork! Yeah, it’s definitely a bit of a weird game, but we figured if we can’t make a winning entry, let’s at least make one that makes a few people laugh :)
And it's a great way to test out if people are interested in this kind of game! :D
True! Gotta say, we’ve already gotten more positive feedback than I had expected. I have absolutely no idea what the ratings will look like, though.
That was very different from all others games in the jam, that was very refreshing. I love myself some story games and the premisse of playing as the director is just awesome. That was chill experience and I loved it very much.
Congratulations on the game!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! We definitely tried to go for a more chill vibe with this game, glad it worked :)
This gameplay is refreshing. There's no pressure, and you're left to enjoy the ride to the end. I tried bringing an unexpected character into the scene to see if there was a reaction from the other protagonists. I'm glad to have seen what it could have given in act 2. Top Notch for voice acting. Great work !
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! :)
Oh yeah, having the other characters react to mistakes would have been a great addition! Maybe if we ever continue working on this game, we’ll add that to the mix :)
I love it ! Good concept and very fun game ! Voice acting is amazing and sound effects work perfectly. Humor is good to ! Congrats to you both !
Thanks a lot! Glad you liked it! :)
Very unique game, good work
Thank you! :)
Great idea for the theme! Got frantic when they all needed to switch costumes and join in for the courtroom scene. I enjoyed it! Also there was a lot of content for a game jam! Great job
Thank you! Yeah, writing a play that was both narratively interesting as well as interesting to play was a bit of a challenge, especially since we had no idea yet if the gameplay would even be fun at all (which, honestly, I still don’t really have an idea about). I ended up relying on big scene changes for a challenge, glad to hear it worked for you :)
