How does your game fit the theme?
There is lots of rhythm games nowadays... But what if we reverse the roles? In BeatReversed you don't need to follow the rhythm - you need to create the rhythm!

Interesting concept, I really like the idea of making different sets and then mixing them in the playlist, kinda feels like working on FL Studio hahaha I love how the UI looks, it's so pleasing to the eyes. It would be nice if you could see the whole level from the start, that way you could try to get it right on the first try, instead of doing trial and error until you get it right.

The only thing that got in the way of me playing for hours was a bug where the character would jump and it wouldn't come back down so each time it jumps it's higher and higher until you can no longer see the level lol.

Developer

Thanks! Sorry for this mistake, yes, it is critical... We plan to fix it after the jam is over!

Cool concept! Though I kinda wish you had to make the beat in real-time, to match upcoming hazards, rather than just trial-and-error since you can’t see ahead.

Very cool and unique concept! I'm really liking the concept of this :) The slight fisheye and grain effect is also very cool hahaha

I'm not really a musically inclined person so I only played the first few easy levels. Here's some of my observations from the early levels I played:

-Maybe when the you nail down the correct rhythm, there'll be a short music that fits the rhythm played. This incentivizes the player to complete the level just to listen to the music when they completes the level!

-There's no indicator for when you failed the puzzle. Instead of just stopping there you could maybe add a distorted sound to indicate its the wrong rhythm, and some animation too for the box.

-The graphics could be more interesting, maybe using the musical staff as the platform or something, or even create your own little musical world to decorate up your game!

-Adding a reset notes button would be very helpful, especially in the late level where you have alot of notes to add.

Overall, really great idea :) Good work on the game!

Thank you so much for such an extended review, good suggestions!

Wow, this is smiliar to sommehing I’m working on currently. Thus, I’m really impressed with the UI which was intuitive, looked good and felt smooth. The gameplay idea is also neat.

What I didn’t enjoy is that since I cannot look ahead with the camera (and even after the song is over, it jumps back to the start), I could only place the beats for the visible parts of the level, then play it, look at the new part, then repeat this over and over, and since the soultions were easy, it felt a bit tidious after a while.

Developer

Really wow! Thanks for the feedback, I hope you finish your version of this idea :)

I like the concept and the gradual introduction of new features! The game is already well put together with a lot of levels. The solutions were a bit easy to figure out from looking at the level and counting out the spaces, though. It might be cool if there were multiple correct solutions. Since you're making the music, maybe more complex and intricate beats/rhythms could be rewarded somehow (i.e. a rating system or something)? Nice job! And I like the squishy animations on the box.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, we will write it in suggestions for improvement :)

Very unique concept, bravo! I had some problems figuring out how to deal with the interface, but maybe it's just me. Excellent work!

Developer

Thank you very much! I hope that in the end you figured out the interface?

Quite a cool idea, aesthetic was really nice and the game played. Would have maybe liked slightly more variation in the sounds played to make it feel more like making music but a super minor nitpick, nice one!

Thank you very much for the feedback and compliments :)

A creative idea. The implementation is good. There wasn't enough more musical component plunging into the atmosphere, but for 48 hours - it's cool!

Thank you!

Super cool concept! The UI is super clean and readable, the graphics fit the game perfectly and the increase in complexity is well done.

I think perhaps it would be nice to see the whole level at once to avoid having to replay your sets in order to see what is next but this is an awesome concept and I really enjoyed playing it!

Developer

Thank you very much for playing and for your feedback! We are very glad that you liked our game <3

Quite an interesting concept, I wonder if you colud make it so the beats can be heard while making the puzzle, so you can't "see" the full level, but you can hear it. Now, then add to it hearing the sound of the beat you just placed and you should be able to complete the full level without having to do much trial and error. Of course then every move shoud have to have a diferent sound xD

Developer

Hi, thanks so much! Good feedback :)

Sorry, I didn't immediately understand your suggestion about listening to the beats before starting the puzzle.... That's what my deleted comment was about.... But now I understand! Thanks!

Cool idea, though for some reason the square on my end wouldn't fall through the gaps or would just have its y-position incrementing with each jump. (This was present in the web version, I'm using Edge, Hardware Acceleration is off)

Developer

Thanks for playing! It's a known issue: clicking Play again sometimes helps, but only if the timeline has been completely played.

This is a super cool platformer concept! I had fun and the bassy beats were cool to listen to while making my sets. Good job! Being able to see the entire stage at once would be nice tho.

Developer

Thanks, nice to hear that!

Submitted(+1)

I agree that you should be able to see the whole level at the beginning; I ended up having to use a trial-and-error process to complete the levels, going one or two jumps at a time, since I couldn't see very far in front of the player. I also wish you could hear the rhythms you made, since this is supposed to be a rhythm game. Nice work on this!

Developer

Well, you actually CAN hear the beats

Maybe you had some sound issues in browser or smth?

Submitted(+1)

Maybe. I'll try again tomorrow and see.

Submitted(+1)

Really great idea and I found it fun and engaging to play! Maybe a grid would make it easier to see how the beats map to moves? Sometimes when there are long platforms it's hard to tell how many beats that platform is.

Developer

Hi, thanks for the feedback! I think we'll upload the build with the fixes after the jam is over.

Submitted(+1)

That's really cool! I love the concept! I would have preferred if it were possible see the whole level at the beginning. Well made!

Developer

Thanks for playing and for the feedback! Unfortunately, we thought about it after the deadline...

This is a really interesting concept. I never thought reversing a rhythm game would work but you found a way! Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you, RetroCoder! We were surprised ourselves :)

is kind of buggy, you sometimes don't fall after a jump, it's also annoying that you can't see the whole level at once, but the game is fun when it works

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah, we kinda messed up with testing and couldn't fix some stuff in time

I think this was a great application of the theme, plus the art looks great! Sometimes my little guy got stuck in the air, but otherwise quite good. The sounds got a little annoying after a while, but good job!

Submitted(+2)

Super cool! I am a big rhythm game fan and this was a cool application of the theme!

Submitted(+2)

Very nice, the cube seems to get stuck some times (floating in the air)

Developer

Thanks! Yeah... It's a known issue, we didn't have time to fix it... Clicking Play again sometimes helps, but only if the timeline has been completely played.
