fun to play and interesting, good job!

I wish I could give this submission more points, I really do. But it's just not fun. The grappling hook doesn't even show up, dude. Control problems and lack of polish aside, that much kills it. 1:2:2, and that's generous.

Fun to rush. I'm sure I didn't get the best time, but I'm happy with 1:19:36. Not sure why the gun launches you forward though.

The "snapping" mechanic is very fun. With some more visual feedback and perhaps a slower flight speed this would make for a very interesting platformer! I wish we got to do something more in regard to the theme, like having to fight Mario at the end, but I understand that the time wasn't very forgiving. Regardless, very fun game!

Developer

I planned to have a cutscene where you shot Mario and he became small when he was at the princess then the princess kissed the goomba and mario crouched. thought it would be a cute way to end the game (also that was before it became basically a kaizo game).

another pico8 game! fun platformer, I love the idea of not really being able to control your jump / vertical movement. sometimes the little grapple points felt pretty hard to hit and the timing could be tight but it was still a lot of fun!

A really short, but fun game which really uses the theme to its advantage. I love the fact that, because the roles are reversed, your character is unable to jump, and as such, must make their way around the level in other ways. It really justifies the idea of the roles being reversed. Other than that, the one thing I would suggest adding would be more levels, which is why I was glad to see at the end of the game that you might update the game following the jam. Overall, a great game, which makes the absolute most of the theme.

Incredible. The idea is done to death, and it doesn't adhere to the theme a whole lot, but this is the most fun GMTK 23 game I've played so far! The beginning is a little unclear on what you have to do, but the grapple mechanic is incredibly fun and pretty responsive. I like how the acceleration changes based on distance (ZOOM!). I really hope you add more levels (as you said in the end card)!

Really funny, hard to master :D

Really cool game, and the puzzle parkour was nicely done! Love the art style, especially the pixel art goomba with a gun. Well done!

A cute game with a cute character holding a gun. Great concept !

Submitted(+1)

nice idea! not sure why mario would up on the mushroom at the start haha. could do a little feedback from the grappling hook!

Submitted(+1)

Took me a while to work out what the controls were, but once I did, I enjoyed the challenging platforming :D

Developer

what controls did you have trouble figuring out?

I'm glad you enjoyed the game. :)

Submitted(+1)

it wasn’t immediately obvious to me that I could click or once I’d worked out that I could, that clicking on the spots was what made me jump :)

Submitted(+1)

Great art style, good job! Maybe add more feedback on the gun, but it was great.

Developer(+1)

yeah, I had a line get drawn when making the raycast function but it wouldn't be viable as it used flip() which updates the screen but doesn't offset the timer. I plan to add it to the draw function in the post-jam version.

Really cool game with an creative idea and interesting mechanics! I just think the game should provide some more feedback for the gun. Like I think it has a limited range but I'm not sure, sometimes it seems like it can shoot through objects and sometimes not. A beam or bullet that shows what excaclty the gun does would be cool

Developer (1 edit)

for debugging I had a system where it paused and drew a line but I didn't know how to implement that into the draw function. the way the gun works if you're curious is it raycasts from the guns orange bit (it's an airsoft gun) to the mouse pointer and shoots the first thing it collides with. I really do need to put that in.

thank you for playing and reviewing my game.

Had fun playing it, but couldn't get past this part, very difficult!

Developer

yeah, it is quite challenging. I felt like the gun flinging felt like an element from a fair Kaizo game (e.g. Celeste) so I made some harder platforming segments to test it out. I should probably put in accessibility features too.

thank you for taking the time to play and review my game to the best of your ability.

I really liked the art style like nearly everybody here  does, and I really enjoyed the mechanics. The gun felt out of place but still I had a lot of  fun using it. I want to play the full version.

Developer

my idea for the gun was since doing the goomba felt too obvious for me I just decided to throw in the gun just for fun. I'm glad you and so many others like the game as I was worried it would be too unapproachable.

Awesome game! The art style is simple and nice, and the way to jump is interesting . I think the weakest point is the way game struggles to introduce mechanics (jumping in particular, and to a lesser extent the fact you need to go left), but once you get everything it feels quite enjoyable. One of the parts seemed unreasonably hard to me, but that is likely cause I used a touchpad, and with a mouse it would've felt awesome to swing myself around. Looking forward to the potential post jam version!

Developer

did you feel the jump was hard to learn because you didn't know about the gun or because you didn't think to shoot the things? for the not being able to tell that you should go left im thinking of reversing the cutscene so Mario comes from the right and goes to the left.

Thank you for leaving a comment and playing my game.

Hey!

I think I didn't initially shoot the thing, so I didn't realise it would fling me across until I did it for accident and went looking for what made me jump.

I initially thought you had to go right cause mario goes right in the cutscene, and so I figured since you go right to get the gun, your mission will be to follow him. I think the idea of going left in video games is definitely interesting (literally reverse), I just wish it was maybe a bit more obvious that this was the intended way right away

Great game! Fun mechanics and awesome level design. Sound effects were a little hit or miss for me, but I loved the art and concept as a whole. Well done!

Developer (1 edit)

which sound effects did you not really like?

also thank you very much for taking the time to play my game!

The only ones that were a little too crunchy or grating for me were the "updraft" or wind blowing thing, and the gun itself. I liked all the other ones! I forgot to mention I also loved the intro cutscene, haha. Definitely gives the player all the motivation they need! I think the run timer should probably have started after the player has control, though, but that's pretty minor. Fun game, man!

Submitted(+1)

Loved it. Beat it in 3:15 according to the timer. Controls were tight and the level design taught the mechanics well. Can't figure out why they didn't give a goomba a gun sooner.

Developer

"Can't figure out why they didn't give a goomba a gun sooner."

They are too scared for what would come!

Thank you for taking your time to play and review the game, much appreciated.

Cute little game! Pretty well made as well, I really liked the idea that you are a goomba and you can't jump!

Developer(+1)

my primary inspiration was in Mario maker how you could see goombas jump off springs to ther platforms and also those pixel art animations by YouTuber "level up".

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to play and review my game. :)
