How does your game fit the theme?
The roles of the chess pieces in the board are reversed. The "valuable" pieces like queen, king and rooks now protect the "expendable" ones (pawns). The game is centered around protecting and capturing pawns while sacrificing kings and queens :)

Interesting idea! Great!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
neat game, however the starting position of the piece being random and the quick restarting can be easily used for an advantageous position. (this is a reverse of chess960)
quirks of chess not present here:
there is no pawn promotion which makes sense as you want to keep as many pawns as possible
also no double step which means you cannot preform en peasant
if you manage to get a state that can castle, you simply cannot, makes sense as kings are less valued and the random starting position.
i enjoyed this (definitely didn't spam r to get good start).
Hahaha I know, but as soon as I flipped the pawns with the other pieces I realized it was to easy to trade each piece with it's adversary. I'll have to think of a better idea for the starting positions.
Most of the quirks were removed because of time (except castling which does not make much sense as you say). Double Step could be added.
Thanks for playing!!
Super fun idea, if you work on it after I would make it so the opponent's move is highlighted because many times I couldn't see where they had moved their piece.
Yes! I had some trouble trying to make a 2 player chess tutorial into a player vs computer game hahahaha but some quality of life changes could be made to the game for sure!
Nice take on chess! Though the engine is super silly (not capturing my queen), it was a fun take! You could try using brute force to go through a few iterations of all the possible moves and then evaluate them by summing up the piece's value. Cool graphics!
Thanks! The algorithm is a brute force check of the best movements but even though it was working (giving me the movement with a 2-move in advance consideration) I could not translate it to the game in time hahaha. The engine basically tries to capture the piece with the most material it can, looking only 1 move forward.
Hopefully I'll polish it to make it a little bit more interesting hahaha
I suck at normal chess, but this was so fun to play! Interesting take on the theme!
Thanks! I like chess but I'm also super bad at it. This one was funnier because it was more aggresive having 8 pieces to capture to win.
Nice twist on the good old chess
Thanks!
When i was a child (until 15 years old) I played "profesional" junior chess and this types of gamemodes remind me when we were boring and playing silly chess themes, good job
It's so motivating to hear that! Glad you enjoyed it. I'll try to polish this game so stay tuned!
Nice different take on the game of chess. Really makes you think differently. IT was nice!
Thank you so much!!
Very cool concept :) I love the idea of a modified chess like game. Keep it up and refine it!
Thanks!! I'll try to update it so stay tuned 😎
Perhaps these types of games just aren't my cup of tea... I apologize, but it's kind of put me off my original love for chess... There are just too many balance issues in this chess game.
I can totally see that! I'll have to check the balance in a mode like this, I'm not very convinced by the outcome from the jam on that regard either. Thanks for checking out the game!
Loved this!!
Rook is OP!
Thank you so much!
I felt so smart at the beginning trading pieces with black... just so I blundered my queen to a pawn in the dumbest way possible :') Oh how the turntables!
Loved your game, quick and straight to the point <3 Nice job.
Thanks! I lost to the computer while trying to test the win conditions more times that I'd like to admit too!
Cool Chess variation! I like your take on the theme. Would like to see more polish with this idea and fleshing it out into something like other Chess variants!
Thanks! Hopefully I'll get to it, adding some features to make it a full game :)
The idea is really basic but if implemented correctly it could be rather fun. I've played many variations of chess like bughouse, antichess, random chess, etc. and each of them has something that creates a small element of strategy to them. Shotgun King is also another amazing game that uses chess as a basis for intricate puzzles. I definitely recommend you give that one in particular a play. For this variation, you just keep your queen relatively safe, kill their queen and win all their pawns like the wayward queen attack. It could be just that I come from an experienced background in chess, but it's far too easy. Maybe if there was only one pawn on each side, the game would last longer and take a lot more thinking. Or if a random piece became the "king" for that specific game which would give your game overall a bit more replayability.
Criticism aside, this is well-polished in terms of presentation and feel. Seriously one of the best I've rated in that department so far. Good work!
Thanks! If you are an experienced chess player you'll be able to beat the game easily. I had some troubles implementing a good AI in time. I'll try to update the game, taking into consideration how these chess variations you mentioned work.
Another idea I had was that maybe if you make a pawn reach the other side of the board you win, that way each player needs to keep an eye on any rogue pawns trying to make a run for it. The queen is a real problem though hahahaha. I'll see what I can do with her.
Quite enjoyable! I like the focus on capturing multiple targets. It also felt a lot faster than chess! Well done!
Thanks! I also realized that it is kind of faster than the usual chess game. Don't know why exactly though hahahaha
interesting idea and it's fun to play !
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
Chess is fun!
Indeed 😎♟️
really good idea, the game is as fun as chess so it varies from person to person, good job anyway.
Thanks!
This is the best game I've played so far this year - really creative and unique idea.
I'm so glad to hear that! I would have liked to have the time to create a better AI, difficulties and 2 players. Thanks for playing!
Cool idea, I might actually try it on a real chessboard against a person sometime. How much of the AI were you able to program? Is it random or are they making some decisions?
Thanks! For the AI I used this tutorial:
However, I was able to implement a one-move ahead algorithm only because of time.
Basically it tries to capture the piece with most material value it can, if not it moves one random piece. A two-move ahead algorithm makes surprisingly good movements already.
