Cool game, you communicated  a difficult concept in a jam setting so well done.

Really cool idea. Calling it "advanced AI" is a little misleading, considering it just checks how similar the input is to sequences it already knows and if it isn't similar enough it just picks randomly. Sound design is kinda dull and could use some improvement, for example, try adding some kind of alarm sound in the cockpit that gradually gets more severe as the hull gets low. Other than that, great game!

Developer

Yes, calling it "advanced AI" was totally a joke :) The code is simple indeed.

Sound design could clearly be enhanced. I blame my lack of skills and the short duration of the jam :/

I love the socks communication idea. The dog voicing out his thought process made it easy to understand the very complicated mechanic. I would recommend investing more time in the sound design. Maybe I was playing too slowly, but the music felt repetitive. To add variety I suggest adding some alarm sounds on the cockpit screen and having some more muffled music background at either one of the other 2 screens.

5 stars from me!

Developer

Thank you for all the good suggestions about the sound design :) I didn't spend much time on it and I did the bare minimum :/ (And, to be honest, I never really worked on the sound design on my previous games. That's a skill I still need to learn)

It was hard to communicate the idea effectively and I'm glad you think I did a good job!

Pretty fun, a little bit confusing (which I think was intentional) but you get the idea of things in a natural way, very good!!

Developer(+1)

I didn't mean to make a confusing game! But yeah, I know it is. I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

The idea is really fun and challenging. The fact you have to tell your dog how to save your life is hilarious!

Developer

I'm glad you liked it! I'll try to find a Windows computer to try your game during the weekend :)

Nice idea, I love the idea, although I lost control somewhat quickly, I was not organized about my controls hahah

Good work!

Always love me some Pico 8! This is a really nice idea and I can see how it led me into many different chaotic and out of control situations!

Submitted(+1)

It got quite tiring flipping from page to page and I would have liked a nicer interface! I understand the technological limitations of pico-8 and what you've done works, but it put a damper on my enjoyment later in the game.

The game was *AMAZING* though and I've never played anything like it. The dog's AI trying to figure out the code was really believable and I felt like I had just the right amount of control over the outcome - lots of tactics games have risk that boils down to % values, but for me, you managed to get away from that sort of cold numerical analysis really well. In many situations I'd cross my fingers and hope my dog "got" what I was trying to say which imo is truly an achievement, to deliver that kind of feeling/experience.

Thank you for the long and helpful review!

I completely agree about the flipping part. It is my first game with such menu system and I underestimated the difficulty of a good UI. In fact the last panel (with the dog's knowledge) was a late addition. Until then, I didn't want the player to think that the dog tells them what to do (because that's other way around). But this recap was very much needed to play correctly. However, I think some players didn't understand it: they thought that what the dog says is a "challenge" to complete, unrelated to the previous choices of the player (and it makes the game quite dull).

I am really happy you liked the game so much! I think I will expand this idea further. The execution is far from perfect and I will iterate on it. The challenge is to avoid "cold numerical analysis", as you called it yourself: at some point the player won't enjoy crafting equation (like for the pirates or the frequency) anymore. But I'm sure there are plenty of ways to explore that idea :)

Sweet another Pico 8 submission! We have a similar setting, totally different execution though, this is really original! Would be great if it was a bit easier to understand which socks you need to give your dog to get the right command, good stuff!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the review! The point of the game is that you decide which socks correspond to the commands. For example, if you choose "big big big small" socks when the spaceship needs to go left, then the dog will remember that. There is a screen (below the screen with the socks) that contains all the dog's knowledge to help the player :)

Is it possible to have a Linux version of your game or the pico8 cart? By the way, if you don't know how to upload a browser-playable version of your game, I can show you how :)

Submitted(+1)

Oh I see! I thought maybe it was like that.
Here's a Linux version! https://atticusfinn.itch.io/redux-linux-version As I was uploading it I tried to make it available in browser and this time it worked (same .zip file as before) I'm not sure if I was doing something wrong or if it was just being weird but now it works so you can play it directly in browser too. Thanks for offering!

Lol this game is hilarious! Nice to see other pico8 games around here. Also the game fits the theme like a glove! I mean like a sock :)

This is really unique, and quite the challenge! Really cool stuff

Developer

Thank you! And yeah, I'm really proud of the uniqueness of my game :)

"While quite challenging to wrap my head around originally, it ended up being a fun and really creative game with quite a smart concept. Great job!"

Really nice idea with socks and controls, and a great implementation of the theme! I also really like the graphics, it reminds me of old Commander Keen :) Great work!

Developer (1 edit)

Comparing my pixel art to Commander Keen is such a kind comment :3 I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

EDIT: Sorry, I can't test your game, I don't have Windows :( But it looks beautiful!

Cool game, nice name and interesting mechanics. One of the few games that I've finished. The music is so catchy.

In the beggining I felt bad, because I didn't combine all tasks and my hull falls inevitably. But then I got the right frekvences two times in a short time, and I had satisfying ending.
