One of the only games i actually had to really think to understand and that made it really interesting!
(Btw you should check out our game if you want: https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/463861)
Actually, it's a bit sad the player can't chose a matching pair that does NOT use one of the rightmost numbers. It makes it harder to understand, and easier to score.
That being said: nice try doing a game using only numbers. Manking a calculation game appealing is not an easy challenge to take in a game jam. You have guts.
I think you could greatly improve the readability of your game by highlighting the last column where the substraction happen. Then I feel like the game is a really boring task, with no timer and no time constraint it just feel like searching for the number 1 step from one of the number at the end of the list and just swapping it. It may happen that you have no other choice than loose the bonus with no real agency to what happen further down the line due to a lack of future insight to which number will appear where...
Perhaps having a mecanic where you have a limited time to make your choice and can choose between swapping, pressing equal or rerolling all the number (sort of a "pass") would be more addictive.
Some color touches would feel better too.
Was thinking about a timer instead of bonus but did not get time to implement and test against each other.
Thanks for the detailed feed back it is much appreciated.
A simple graphical marking of the numbers in the last column or a minus sign there would have been enough.
Great game!
Couldn't get the webversion to start q.q
Apologies, seems to be the engine I used. I also sometimes get the issue with HTML5 games(not just my own) with this engine not starting but a refresh fixes it.
Interesting math game, but at the end of the day you're just trying to find a number that is 1 away from one of the rightmost numbers, right?
I think that this could be improved a bit if there was some more interesting decisions. At first, I thought that "11" would count as 2 1s, so I thought I should be trying for that, but it didn't. I also thought that the numbers were sliding down from the left, which would have made me plan a bit more, but again, that wasn't the case. With a few tweaks, this could be pretty cool!
The numbers are sliding down from the left. I needed more time to work on game feel and UX stuff, wanted to have the buttons/cards slide left, the two right most doing and add animation etc.
Thanks for the feed back it is helpful in letting me what is confusing.
