Smart idea! I like your implementation of the "only one button"-controls: felt very intuitive. I also really enjoyed the atmosphere, the time you put into understanding the lighting in Godot was well worth it. ;) I am not entirely sure, so I'll ask you: Is there any reload time? I felt like there's is a small pause after a while, if you spam-shoot too hard.  Either way, I think that could be a good tool to increase the tension: when you're not able to shoot a zombie before it reaches you (even if it's a full screen length away!), that guarantees that you've to move back, further emphasizing your main mechanic. You could even go  a step further and couple the reloading to movement: so you shoot all your rounds into that nasty zombie guarding the key (really funny btw! :D) and than have to backtrack a while in order to generate the final bullets required to put it into eternal rest.

My godot game: https://njamster.itch.io/wonkey (playable in browser, not mobile friendly)

Developer

Thank you for playing! :)
There's no reload, it works a bit different. Since I have only one button, I'm using timers for the different actions. If the LMB is pressed for less than 0.2 seconds, than it shoots, otherwise it moves the player. So, what you might experiencing is probably your fingers are getting tired, and one click takes more than 0.2 seconds, therefore the character starts to move instead of shooting.
The other things you mentioned are planned to be implemented in the future release. Once the jam is over, I'll start working on it.
I'll try your game for sure, Godot rulez! :D

Decent game. This is the first one I've rated, so I don't have a perfect reference point though...

I found that the acceleration-based movement meant that I could be moving in one direction and shooting in another, which kind of bypasses the main choice of the game.

I would recommend adding in a zombie monster that accelerates slowly like the player does, because that encourages strafing over constantly backpedaling/shooting, and it would give a more unique feel to the combat.

Developer

Thank you!
Yeah, that was the main idea, that you need to switch between running and gunning, but I didn't have enough time to polish that part, so that's why it's like this now, but I will continue to work on it, to make it better. :)

Cool game, I can't believe Mark Brown played your game! That must've been exciting to see on stream :)

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks!
Yeah, it was very cool, I never thought, that once I will be on the mighty GMTK channel (even if it's just a stream). I watched it like 10x since then, and noted everything that he said about it, so I can make it better! :D

I really liked the game! It reminded me of one I made for TriJam some time ago called "Rock Knight".  The blood splats when zombies got shot are satisfying. While the only control was LMB, it didn't feel weird that it did multiple things - great job! There are some minor things to improve: player movement felt floaty... like it was ice-scating and I could shoot some enemies before they've seen me.

I had fun finishing your game! :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your feedback!
Yeah, I know about that, I plan to fix those. :)

Submitted(+1)

Really liked the atmosphere and the floating texts.  The floaty movement was less fun, I feel like  movement without acceleration might be a lot more responsive.

Developer

Thank you! :)
Yeah, that movement isn't the best, I plan to rewrite it for future releases.

Submitted(+1)

It's a funny game, and it have a great sense of humor with the text hahaha.Good concept, it remembers me to the classic Resident evil where you can only shot or move. Nice work!

Developer

Thank you! :)

Submitted(+1)

It's a good prototype. Could be very good mobile game if you want to expand it.

Developer

Thank you, yes, I'm planning to work on it more! :)

This feels like it should be on a phone. I'm not sure how you would dish out the mandatory 3 stars thing that every phone game has to have though.

I don't have much else to add beyond what the other comments said. However, I didn't find it harder at all than it would've been without the theme. I've played enough stealth games to just switch gears. If you want to continue working on this game, that might be something to consider either emphasizing or moving away from. If you want to move in the direction of careful and stealthy, limited ammo would be a good first step.

Developer

Thank you for your feedback! :)
Well, it might be a run against the clock, or accuracy with gun, or I don't know. I do planned a phone version, when I made it, but I didn't really thought about the 3 star ranking system, so I might just leave it out at all... :P
Yes, it's not that hard in this stage, and it lacks many things that would make it more interesting. I want it to be a stealthy horror kinda game, I have a lot of ideas where to move the development from here, I just want wait until the jam ends.

Submitted(+1)

First of all, love the humor in the game.

Second of all, it's a great concept. Really encourages the player to be careful about where they go.

Also......yeah, there was one bug.You could shoot at enemies from a sort of far distance and they'd do nothing really. But anyway you mentioned in the beginning about the bugs so XD XD....

Developer

Told ya... :D

I enjoyed that, only being able to do one thing at a time increased the difficulty.  There was a few spots where I could shoot the zombies before they triggered to attack me.  Fun game, died twice before I finished it.  Good stuff.

Developer

Thank you for your feedback! :)

Submitted(+1)

Nice game! Having to choose between movement or shooting is really interesting. Maybe the firing rate should be turned down a bit so you can't spam-shoot quite as much. Also, I think the movement would feel better if the player accelerated and decelerated faster, since right now it feels like you're moving on ice (but maybe this is intentional since it does make the game harder).

Developer

Thank you!
That movement wasn't intentional at all, but there was too many things to tweak, so I went with a minimum viable product in order to make sure I don't brake anything in the last minutes. But now, I don't have to worry about time, so once the jam is over (and I have time) I will continue to work on it.

Finished ! And alright then, I won't ask ;p

Good to see some Godot too.

Developer

Thanks for playing! :D

Honestly it's really good.

The choice between move or shoot and how it's implemented kinda felt to me like a more modern take on the "Tank Controls" older survival horror had to not let you go gun crazy and kill everything, the sound design felt spot on for a zombie game, and i like the little "Light area" to get the atmosphere right, also i agree with what most people already said here these types of controls would work quite well for mobile.

2 small things but nothing much,

you should cap the firerate, because if you have a good triggerfinger you can almost go machine guning the ennemies from a distance, and since you can see the zombies further than they can see you you can sometimes kill them while they stand still.

Otherwise your game is solid so congrats ! :)

Also the "hungarian meme room" even though i had no idea what it meant XD proved useful for navigation to find the purple door.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for your feedback (+1 for mobile, noted)! :)
Oh, I remember the "tank controls", but until now I had no idea it has a name... :D
The lights and shadows are need more tweaking as well, it's not how I imagine to be, but that happens when you have deadlines.

Fire rate. Yep, it was planned as well, and a shotgun too. You could switch between them with a [LMB] swipe up or down. But the game was too short for more than one gun, and somehow I ended up with the simplest one, e.g. no reload, no fire rate limit, no fixed amount of ammo. But again, these will be all back once I continue to work on this project.
The zombies... yes you can see them, I don't have an excuse for that, it's just bad game design. :P

P.S.:
About the bojler thing: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/bojler-elado
Like I said, don't ask. Just don't. :D

Haha thanks for the info now i know :p

Sweet prototype you got in there! I believe this could turn out as a great mobile game.

Really liked the "run or gun" concept. Plus, Godot is neat.

Developer

Thank you for your feedback! :)
Godot is bae! :D

Submitted(+1)

Very nice! I believe the design is good, and with a variety of enemies and slightly better AI, it could be a very challenging and fun game.

I enjoyed playing the demo level. I hope you'll give an extra twist to the game, it has potential!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you!
Yes, I will work on it more ! :)

Submitted(+1)

Nice sound design. Hopefully you have some time to polish it more so that it cannot be cheesed to completion (zombies struggle to turn corners) and the shooting range vs zombie following. I like the most the adherence to the theme (you can only run or gun), I think it works best on a touchscreen- although for a mouse maybe instead of dragging a switch mode button could be done instead (I am not sure- just a suggestion)?

Developer(+1)

Thank you! :)
Yes, I'm planning to work on it more, and I want an Android port as well, but I have another smaller project to finish before that.
Well maybe it's just me but I found the dragging more comfortable, you don't need to press anything to switch. Just tap or hold anywhere on the screen anytime you want.
And, yeah the zombies are very dumb, because they are only moving to the player's direction in a straight line, if they are closer than 480 pixel, no AI involved at all. I'm planning to add a field of vision, and A* pathfinding, but for me it's not something that I can implement in a couple of hours... :D

Sweet little game; well designed, the one button movement/shooting mechanism is quite clever! I also loved the atmosphere, the little writings on the floor, and the creepy background music. You also used Godot's lighting effect, which made the zombies cast shadows! Good job :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks! :)
It was my first time using the Lights though, so I lost a couple hours to figure out how they actually work, that's why I had to make a lot of sacrifices in the game to be able to finish it... :D

(+1)

It's a very good game. Little bit hard. When a lot of zombies go towards you, that's pretty hard. I defeated when the last room 5 zombies run towards me. I think that was the last room. Indeed it's a good game. Maybe more levels needed... :)

Developer

Thanks!
That was the last one indeed. You can run away and shoot them one by one. They are dumb. :D

Submitted(+1)

pretty fun game, would love to see it made longer

Developer

Thank you, I'm planning to make it a "real" game! I learned a lot during the development. :)
