Very interesting idea, but implementation can be better.

I think it will be better if you can switch to the ship's system just by using it, i.e.

  • press WASD to start moving, but while moving, cannot start another system
  • press space to start shielding
  • press shift to recharge
  • hold mouse button to shoot

and while holding any of the above buttons, disallow pressing any other buttons.

This can eliminate the use of number buttons, and still creates the dilemmas i am facing

Thank you very much for the feedback! I totally agree, I'd much rather switch by using the system, but sadly ran into some major time constraints making the game. (While we had 48 hours, this game only had ~8 hours of work :( )

I'd also love to have give much better visual feedback on when you're charging, when your stuff is disabled, etcetera.

Totally understand your pain, real life can be a challenge too

I found particularly interesting the delay that you have between every switch, it forces you to think ahead

But the shield, even with the delay it's op, if you manage it correctly u would never need to move
Maybe if it would drain the battery and be activated more quickly could be more like the last defense
Good luck!
