You've accidentally shaved the beard off Zeus and now he's quite angry. A game so hard it might break you.

A difficult game, I could not jump over the first wall, my hand just presses the button back to slow down. But overall the concept is interesting, good work!

I like how you worked the asset into your intro. Nice work on justifying the one direction with lore! You are right that it is a pretty hard game especially with muscle memory trying to make me look back. Great take on the theme

It's a good game which was made by a family team, I appreciate that. However, do not forget to adjust a default character controller as it's has terrible jump and movement parametrs.

Developer

Yup UE has shocking default mechanics.  I left it in because it added to the difficulty for now.

The game in itself is pretty good, though challenging! I loved the way you were able to justify the one direction theme, not gonna lie I chuckled when I understood it... There is potential here you just need more ideas to further develop your mechanics, ideas on how to use these mechanics originally! Great job with the game!

Would love if you could check mine out too! Or not, no pressure ;)

Developer

Thanks very much, i have  few ideas on how to expand like inverting controls and camera stuff so hopefully I can hit on something unique.

Will check out your game asap

It's fine, need a bit more of develop of the idea, but could be great. It really needs a own art style, but i understand that it was hard because time contrains. Keep improving!

Developer

Thanks for playing dude.  It will get an arty makeover once the voting on the jam is over for sure.

You should defo be proud of the intro, it's great!

It is very hard though, I managed to get to cloud #3. Is that a record? Nice work!

Developer

Thanks for playing, one person said they got a distance of 400 but they played it for 2 hours solid.  The key is not too pick up too much speed I find, if you try and do it as fast as possible you'll overjump alot.  Again, Thanks a million for playing. Much appreciated.

I kind of wish there just wasn't a way to look back, instead of it killing you for doing so. It took me quite a few tries before I understood why I kept dying.

Developer

I toyed with the idea of removing moving back all together but we intended to make more puzzly bits to try and trick the player into going the wrong direction etc..

I should have explained better at the start that the player can't turn back.

Really hard! The voice acting cracked me up. I understand the one directional movement, but it made it difficult to control myself midair (although maybe that's the point since we're dealing with Zeus?), contributing to a lot of the difficulty.

Developer

That was my 11 year old daughter on VA duties and cutscene art.  She'll be delighted to read that.

Wow love this game :D

Developer

Thanks very much.

I like the idea but I found it too hard and didn't like going through the start screen on each retry.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing dude.  Yeah its intentionally super hard, the plan was like long versions of super meat boy.  Now I have more time I'll fix the intro to not repeat every time.

I had fun time playing this... hard game.. ;) I think pixel art would suit best for this game...but anyway props to the developer... neat juicy game...

Kindly, try mine and rate it https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/431948

Developer

Thanks buddy, once the jam is over I'll work on a more suitable art style.

No exit is an excellent game.

Wau it is very hard, but i try end

Please check our game toó: https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/461656

Developer

thanks for playing.  Its a tough one.

Book Slime is a lot of fun. My best score was 56.

For exiting the game, Alt-F4 is faster, and probably a better method to be recommending on the game page, as it doesn't require waiting to get control back.

I also ran into the lag issue and dislike the visual shift as the other commenters did. However, I don't know how much can be done on that area, as I've experienced lag in literally every game I've tried that was build in UE4. I think if you use UE4 for a game jam, you'll need to expect some amount of players not being able to run your game. That said, detailed rain drops definitely don't help.

Developer (2 edits)

thanks for trying dude, ue seems to be demanding alright. when the jam is over i,ll prob remake in unity for 2d.

the visual shift is jarring alright but we didnt have time to do sprites/platforms graphics.  New sprites to better match the cutscene feel in the playable sections is among top priorities when the jam os over and I can edit.

Thanks again for the feedback... could you if possible pm me your pc specs and gfx card model as im trying to establish minimum and recommended spec? hopefully optimize performance for you guys.

edit: oh and thanks for the alt f4 tip, dunno why i didnt think of that. lack of sleep probably.

It's too difficult even to reach the second cloud.

The idea of one direction movement works against the level design.

I'm sorry but it wasn't fun to play :(

Developer

its intentionally difficult, inspired by games like vvvvvv, maybe too much so.  difficulty is a common complaint so I should look into toning it down.  thanks for trying it out dude, much appreciated..

Submitted(+1)

I like the intro! :D
But the game after that cute intro becames a nightmareish rage game. I tried and tried and tried, but just couldn't get past the first cloud. Good ol' Zeus always smashed me...
Try to tweak it a bit more, other than that I like the graphics and the effects, but it could use some optimization. :)

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks for playing and the great feedback. My daughter will be thrilled you liked the intro as she did all the voice acting and art (she's 11.)

Yeah I made it intentionally super hard in the style of VVVVVV/Super Meat Boy etc.. because it can be done in 60 seconds.  Maybe too hard as no one has finished it yet lol.  The trick is to take your time and not rush or go into jumps with too much momentum because if you overshoot even marginally you can't turn back.

Submitted(+1)

Oh, that's really nice. Maybe, next, you could try to make a full game together where she does all the art and you do the coding! :)
Wait, so I died because I wanted to turn back? I had no idea... :D Let me try again!

Developer

yeah you cant turn left, i should have made that clearer. i hadnt time to add tutorials in game

Submitted(+1)

Yeah, now that I know that, I can get through the first wall, and then instantly die... but it's something... :D

Developer(+1)

progress! thanks for retrying dude.

I had some fair lag issues playing this which was a bit disappointing. I have a fairly decent machine too so there may be something in the code eating up resources.

A platform where you can't look back is rather interesting, there are some Mario Maker levels that do a similar enough concept. It's definitely something that could work but there needs to be more visual info about it. It took a few deaths for a big dummy like me to figure out why I was dying.

Developer (2 edits)

Thanks for the feedback buddy.  Sorry to hear about the lag, tis a weird issue a few people are having.  Hopefully when the jam is over I'll be able to update with explanations etc.. on what every power up does etc..   it was a time issue.

If it's not trouble could I bother you to pm me what specs you are running on?  Mainly so I can optimise the game, hopefully get a better player experience after the jam.

Can't rate because my potato computer lagged & I couldn't figure out what to do.

Developer (1 edit)

Sorry to hear the game is not running well for you buddy.   Can you list pm me your pc specs and graphics card if possible a few people are hitting lag issues with this and I'm trying to get to the bottom of it.  Thanks for playing btw or at least trying to.

(+1)

I liked the little intro bit. I wish the rest of the game shared it’s style.

The game is really dark, I couldn’t see where I was going and it was lagging a lot on my computer. I couldn’t really get farther then the first wall.

Also, how did you implement the theme?

Developer (1 edit)

I'd love to have the cartoony style all the way throuogh, after the jam I might replace the store assets with custom ones that match the intro art, was a time issue where I couldn't replace them.

I'll tweak brightness too.

For the theme we went with only running in 1 direction, whilst the camera jumps around, different powerups mess with your controller etc.. We also built the entire game, menu's cutscenes etc.. all run inside one level instead of seperate one like is common in unreal.  So basically.

1 mp game, with 1 direction and the entire game including UI's etc.. being built in 1 screen.

The lag seems to be killing people with this, could you pm me your pc specs so I can try and analyze whats going on?
