Fun game! I'd never heard of Pocket Platformer, it seems like a pretty useful tool, especially for a jam/prototype game. The different levels were each individually interesting, the intentional secret warps as a nod to speedrunning were fun to find, I'm sure there's more that I missed.

Developer

A few people mentioned glitches that would jump the player, sometimes backwards. Not everyone realized that they are meant to be secret ways to speed up the game. Thank you for the note!

Fun game and challenging with the cannons. I like all the different mechanics it introduced and this feels pretty polished, very smooth controls and movement.

Developer

I'm happy you enjoyed it, and thank you for the reply.

Difficult platformers are totally my jam (sorry) and this one is executed very well, so it's easily one of my favorite submissions!
The difficulty curve was way off for me personally, with the cannon level taking me many, many tries while I managed most others without a single death, but I like how you introduced something new with each level and it all felt very tight and fair. Also, great choice of background music for maintaining a chill vibe.
Really nice work, I'd totally pay for a longer version of this with more levels!

Thank you, I really appreciate your feedback!

Uploaded a video of me playtesting!

Thanks for doing this - so cool! I think only one time before someone did a recording of playing my game, so it was really neat seeing it. Also, I see now that "Space" was listed as jump, even though it didn't work. I removed that text to clear up the confusion.  I really appreciate you taking the time to do a play through!

You're welcome! Yeah it's cool seeing someone else actually playing it haha and very helpful too, I think

love the game only problem i had is that i didnt like they keybinds for the dash :). i couldnt reach easy for it.

Developer

The jump / dash combinations should be right next to each other. c/x and j/k. Now, that's assuming a QWERTY keyboard. Are you using another format?

ah i didnt know this i was using my w for the jumping.

The game was practically addicting! I had to complete it, my only notes are that the music got a bit repetitive and that there was a glitch occasionally where I would get sent back to an earlier part of the level if I dashed into a wall sometimes.

Developer(+1)

Hey DK, thanks for the feedback! The "glitch" you found is actually supposed to be a secret and invisible warp zone to move you further ahead in the level (although it works both ways). It's to give something for speedrunners to look for to reduce their times.

This game was fun. One thing I could immediately say is that I would allow space for jump. Having the sprint be k allowed the player to use two hands and this only would have been better had jump been space. It's hard to use one hand to control both movement and jumping. In the level where you're jumping the spikes (3rd, I think), I was on the second flag and you could jump through the wall and end up on the first level for some reason. That seemed odd. Sound would have really helped. Because it was for speed running, maybe add a timer?  Other than that, it was fun. Well done!

Hi Julian. I agree that one hand for movement and jumping is too hard. That's why c/x and j/k do these.

The "glitch" you found is supposed to be a secret portal. Unfortunately, they go both ways.

There's a timer! You just need to complete all 6 levels to see it!

Oh! I saw there was an alternative for dash, missed the jump. I’ll give it another shot!

Cool, finished it. I couldn't get past the cannon level no matter how many times I played it the first time. Tried it today and did it in one try. Fun little game!

This was very fun to play. The movement was smooth and the music was calm and serene which contrasts perfectly with the "frustrating" platforming. The art is minimal which fits the aesthetic of the game. The cannon ball level was hard ngl.

Developer

Thanks for the reply here. I really just went for a simple platformer that wasn't crazy but was tough enough to allow for lots of improvement.

Very polished game

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I spent most of my time just building the levels, then going back and making the graphics look better, and improving some of the layouts so that the game was easier or at least potentially quicker to play.

This is a super fun and polished game that ties in well with the game jam's themes. Really enjoyed the idea of each level bringing in a new element of gameplay - it kept me on my toes! (Tbh that cannonball level had me sweating haha.) Looks and sounds great too - the attention to detail is on point. Excellent work! :)

Developer

Thank you, really appreciate the feedback. I was happy to have come up with the idea of each level changing rather than the player changing, or using items that are one-time use.

Love the platforming in the game. It feels so smooth!

Thank you! Please see the Itch page for some more detail on how I created this!
